Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Futurevision represents a new stage in the evolution of near term research and speculation into the world of tomorrow. This volume, which brings together twenty-five leading experts in a variety of social and scientific areas, attempts to foresee likely harmful or undesirable results of advances hi scientific and technological ingenuity. In developing an early-warning system designed to elicit prudent reflection and timely action, futurism has now entered the mainstream of social thought. The volume is divided into eight categories: the future of work, education, management, sustainability, projections about the future, decline or revitalization, medical ethics, and the global scene as such. Among the major issues taken up are the threat of persistent technological unemployment in high-tech societies, approaches to teaching about the future, new forms of specialization and speculation, virtual learning in simulated contexts, planning models in business and industry that permit rapid shifts, changes in the economy that result from a move from a product to a service-based economy, patterns of innovation in agriculture using less space to feed more people, and the general analysis of forecasting and predicting future events with present methodologies. Futurevision aims to recast the basic fault lines of current social, scientific, and technological analysis. The volume emphasizes long-term perspectives, future relevant research and thinking, weapons analysis and warfare, population and planetary exploration--examining what constitutes significant knowledge in this new environment--and the broad area of learning and caring hi meaningful contexts. There is a new seriousness in future research that will be appealing to students and teachers and researchers of sociology, psychology, and economics, especially those working with current data and qualitative research techniques.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical algorithms are a fundamental component of Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems. This book provides a bridge between algebraic geometry and geometric modelling algorithms, formulated within a computer science framework. Apart from the algebraic geometry topics covered, the entire book is based on the unifying concept of using algebraic techniques – properly specialized to solve geometric problems – to seriously improve accuracy, robustness and efficiency of CAD-systems. It provides new approaches as well as industrial applications to deform surfaces when animating virtual characters, to automatically compare images of handwritten signatures and to improve control of NC machines. This book further introduces a noteworthy representation based on 2D contours, which is essential to model the metal sheet in industrial processes. It additionally reviews applications of numerical algebraic geometry to differential equations systems with multiple solutions and bifurcations. Future Vision and Trends on Shapes, Geometry and Algebra is aimed specialists in the area of mathematics and computer science on the one hand and on the other hand at those who want to become familiar with the practical application of algebraic geometry and geometric modelling such as students, researchers and doctorates.

Book excerpt: Study abroad is now both an international industry and an experience that can have a deep impact on students’ linguistic, cultural and personal development. This book explores ‘the social turn’ in the fields of study abroad and language learning strategies. The longitudinal qualitative study reported in this volume investigates the international educational experiences of Arab university students from diverse countries (Iraq, Libya, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Syria and the United Arab Emirates) and represents one of the few empirical studies to capture an in-depth understanding of the study abroad experiences of newly-arrived international students in higher education. Particular attention is paid to their changing learning goals, underlying motivations and strategy uses during their attendance on both short and long academic programmes in a study abroad context. It also examines their past language learning experiences in their homelands retrospectively. Readers will gain a better understanding of international students’ study abroad experiences in terms of their expectations, aspirations, diverse difficulties and the strategies they deploy to deal with these difficulties.

Book excerpt: The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) Veterinary Departments have enabled an environment suitable to set an international benchmark on a project concept to enhance the welfare of racehorses, based on research using extensive and detailed data collection within an integrated framework. Retrospective analysis of data collected over the past several years has been made available. The approach outlined in this book has two broad objectives. The first is to investigate outcomes of interest using data which has already been collected. Outcomes of interest are likely to include (though not be limited to), variables that influence injury, retirement or performance. The second broad objective is to extend the approach to a more general assessment of the usefulness of different data types and different variables, and the assessment of data collection, collation, analysis and reporting methodology, as well as the development of intervention strategy. This book concludes with a philosophical view point on the veterinary management of thoroughbred racing injuries in which a “think-out-of-the-box” concept in assessing the risk of racehorse injuries is discussed. One outcome of this is an integrated technology approach for tracking horse performance, recently developed by Cambridge Design UK. The integrated technology (flight deck recorder concept) for monitoring trackwork and race performance of racehorses can allow a standardised review of detailed training data and biometric readings from direct measurements of individual horse, to assess the progress of performance and the effect of track conditions. The development of integrated performance tracking technology is mission critical for the worldwide racing industry to optimize horse welfare, safety and racing performance, as well as to enhance the integrity of racing.

Book excerpt: The Far Future Vision is the forty-first instalment in the Little Blue Book Series and is comprised of the seventeenth, eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth discourses of the Duodoxy, which is itself the second disquisition of the founding book of Astronism, called the Omnidoxy. The Little Blue Book Series was created and first published by Cometan himself as a way to simplify and commercialise the immensity of the two million word length of the Omnidoxy into smaller, more bite-size publications. A successful series from its very first published entry, the Little Blue Book Series has gone on to become a symbol of Astronist commercial literature and a way for Cometan’s words to reach readers of all ages and abilities who remain daunted by the beauty and yet the sheer extensiveness of the Omnidoxy as the longest religious text in history.

Book excerpt: "Libya: Present Success and Future Vision Under the Leadership of Prime Minister (Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh)" is an in-depth exploration of Libya's transformative journey under the exceptional leadership of Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh. Authored by internationally published writer Amir Albaghdadi, the book presents a vivid narrative of how, with the favor of Allah and under Dbeibeh's guidance, Libya is rising from the ashes of conflict to embrace stability, development, and hope. In this meticulously researched account, Albaghdadi traces the key political, social, and economic milestones that have defined Libya’s resurgence. The book highlights the visionary policies that have been implemented under the Government of National Unity, showcasing how Dbeibeh has unified the country, steered major infrastructure and energy projects, and restructured sectors such as healthcare, education, and public utilities. From the establishment of state-of-the-art hospitals and schools to the rejuvenation of roads, parks, and electricity networks, Libya’s ongoing progress is vividly detailed. Albaghdadi provides readers with an insightful analysis of how, through Dbeibeh's leadership, Libya has achieved unprecedented improvements in public welfare, with initiatives like the 5.3 million beneficiaries of the Wife and Children Grants, the 127% salary increase for public sector employees, and comprehensive water and electricity projects aimed at improving the quality of life for all Libyans. The book also delves into the rebuilding efforts in areas devastated by recent disasters, such as the 2 billion dinar allocation to the Benghazi and Derna Reconstruction Fund and the creation of essential infrastructure to support recovery. Dbeibeh's leadership has extended into critical areas like disaster response, environmental sustainability, and youth empowerment, as seen in the establishment of the Developers and Inventors Club and the revitalization of the national healthcare system. "Libya: Present Success and Future Vision" is more than just a record of achievements. It is a testament to a nation’s resilience and its determination to shape a promising future. Albaghdadi brings readers into the heart of Libya’s rebirth, making it a must-read for those interested in international leadership, development, and the power of national unity. Through Albaghdadi’s eyes, Libya’s transformation is not just a story of a nation but a model of how visionary leadership can rebuild a country on the path to peace and prosperity.

Book excerpt: In a world of fierce global competition and rapid technological change, traditional strategies for gaining market share and achieving efficiencies no longer yield the returns they once did. How can companies drive consumer preference and secure sustainable growth in this digital, social, and mobile age? The answer is through functional integration. Some of the world's most highly valued companies—including Amazon, Apple and Google—have harnessed this new business model to build highly interactive ecosystems of interrelated products and digital services, gaining new levels of customer engagement. Functional integration offers forward-looking brands a unique competitive edge by using transformative digital technologies to deliver high-value customer experiences, generate repeat business, and unlock lucrative new business-to-business revenue streams. Connected By Design is the first book to show business leaders and marketers exactly how to use functional integration to achieve transformative growth within any type of company. Based on R/GA's pioneering work with firms at the forefront of functional integration, Barry Wacksman and Chris Stutzman identify seven principles companies must follow in order to create and deliver new value for customers and capture new revenues. Connected By Design explains how functional integration drove the transformation of market-leading companies as diverse as Nike, General Motors, McCormick & Co., and Activision to establish authentic brand relationships with their customers, enter new categories, and develop new sources of income. With Connected by Design, any company can leverage technological disruption to redefine its mission and foster greater brand loyalty and engagement.

Book excerpt: "The future is not what it used to be. In this volatile era, with the world changing at a rapid rate, people are more anxious than ever about what lies ahead. Will relentless consumerism end up destroying our planet? Or can science and technology allow us to innovate our way out of trouble? Perhaps a greater social consciousness and community-based living will take over - or, conversely, the competition for limited resources may result in everyone fighting for themselves. Drawing on these four possible futures, Richard Watson and Oliver Freeman invite us to examine critically the risks and opportunities to come. They discuss the key factors, trends, critical uncertainties, and wildcards that will shape the future, guiding us to a greater awareness of long-term problems and possible solutions - and empowering us not only to adapt to what might happen but also to shape our future and generate change. It's impossible to know for certain what the future holds, but we can remove some of its surprises by engaging in a meaningful debate about the choices we face now. This book shows us how." -- Publisher description.

Book excerpt: This important volume reviews the history of the telecommunication superhighway pointing out its beginnings in the interactive TV and broadband highway of the wired cities more than two decades ago. It explains the technological uncertainties of the superhighway and many of its futuristic services, and also gives an understandable review of the technological principles behind today's modern telecommunication networks and systems. Recognizing that technology is only one factor in shaping the future, the author, a well-recognized telecommunications expert, analyzes the financial, policy, business, and consumer issues that undermine the superhighway. The book concludes by showing that today's switched telephone network and CATV systems already form a telecommunication superhighway carrying voice, data, image, and video communication for a wide variety of services that enable us to stay in contact with anyone anywhere on our planet. Highway of Dreams is written clearly with understandable explanations for nonspecialists. It challenges the technological utopia offered by the promoters of the superhighway and suggests that consumer needs, finance, corporate culture, and policy often have far greater impact on the future than technology alone.
