Book excerpt: The objectives of this project were to review currently used methods of evaluating the economics of alternative transportation systems, develop a framework within which to evaluate the economics of alternative multimodal metropolitan transportation systems, and develop quantification methods for such factors as accessibility and capacity that relate them to all modes. The research was to include sensitivity analysis to identify those aspects of a modal investment policy that have major impacts on the output variables and therefore should be included in the results presented to transportation decision makers.

Download or read book Bus Use of Highways written by Herbert S. Levinson and published by Highway Research Board. This book was released on 1973 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report, based on a review of ongoing and completed research, reflects the experience of more than 200 bus priority treatments in the United States and elsewhere. The types of treatments, the number of people they serve, and the design details they utilize vary widely. Treatments can be grouped into three broad categories: those relating to freeways, arterials, and terminals. Most bus priority treatments consist of reserved bus lanes on downtown city streets. Bus-ways and other freeway-related treatments are ground or proposed mainly in large U.S. cities with rail transit systems, large downtown employment, and/or heavy peak-hour transit use. The importance of ramp metering, downtown distribution facilities, fringe parking effective enforcement of arterial buslanes, and the importance of allowing for future conversion to other systems are also discussed.

Download or read book Cougar written by Maurice Hornocker and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-12-15 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cougar is one of the most beautiful, enigmatic, and majestic animals in the Americas. Eliciting reverence for its grace and independent nature, it also triggers fear when it comes into contact with people, pets, and livestock or competes for hunters’ game. Mystery, myth, and misunderstanding surround this remarkable creature. The cougar’s range once extended from northern Canada to the tip of South America, and from the Pacific to the Atlantic, making it the most widespread animal in the western hemisphere. But overhunting and loss of habitat vastly reduced cougar numbers by the early twentieth century across much of its historical range, and today the cougar faces numerous threats as burgeoning human development encroaches on its remaining habitat. When Maurice Hornocker began the first long-term study of cougars in the Idaho wilderness in 1964, little was known about this large cat. Its secretive nature and rarity in the landscape made it difficult to study. But his groundbreaking research yielded major insights and was the prelude to further research on this controversial species. The capstone to Hornocker’s long career studying big cats, Cougar is a powerful and practical resource for scientists, conservationists, and anyone with an interest in large carnivores. He and conservationist Sharon Negri bring together the diverse perspectives of twenty-two distinguished scientists to provide the fullest account of the cougar’s ecology, behavior, and genetics, its role as a top predator, and its conservation needs. This compilation of recent findings, stunning photographs, and firsthand accounts of field research unravels the mysteries of this magnificent animal and emphasizes its importance in healthy ecosystem processes and in our lives.

Book Synopsis A Signaller's War by : David Langley
Download or read book A Signaller's War written by David Langley and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the First World War roared into its second year, 17-year-old Lawrence Ellis marched into his recruitment office and signed up, eager to fight for King and Country. Underage, as so many were, it wasn't until he had cut his teeth in the Royal Field Artillery that Ellis joined the Corps of Royal Signallers. It was some years after the war, however, that the private began to commit his memories to art and words. A Signaller's War includes a poignant selection of Ellis' images, portraying the conditions, experiences and hopes of the common soldier in the trenches of the Western Front. Often humorous, sometimes horrific, always honest, this collection is a unique insight into the life of a young volunteer who grows from a boy to a man during his service, after witnessing the aftermath of the Somme and action at Cambrai. He was not a trained artist, writer or diarist, yet his work demonstrates a skill and sensitivity that will leave the reader breathless.
