Book excerpt: Growing up The Bronx in the 1960s When thinking back to when you were seven or eight or nine years old, before adult life kicks in, being a child is a happiest you will ever be. Your whole world is so small with boundaries everywhere. Your happiest moments could be summed up by a good cartoon, or a small toy. What is so special about childhood is that it is temporary. Your childhood consciousness really ends at about 10 years old. When you hit that puberty wall. Then you are an adult forever. That short period called childhood ends. The way you walked, talked, and all you were, ends. Like the caterpillar becomes a butterfly. The butterfly can't crawl on the ground anymore the way it once did. As an adult you will never feel like a child again, even though daily we all try to capture those simple moments of youthful careless bliss. There's a cast of characters and events that shaped you unconsciously. They stay with you in your memory, although you'll never be there, or see them again. In the end, you don't draw anything from your past, your past draws you.

Only to come to find that all the time that he was growing up they really didnat feel he was their grandson. He grew up with all the intention to succeed in life no matter what anyone said or did. He made sure that he put his mind into getting better things and helping his family. The little boy never let the people around him get to him so that he made it in life. The ambition in this boy explains for itself, that anyone who has been treated badly when their father has passed can succeed and do anything. There is always love for everyone.

It requires ingenuity and not being faint of heart. Growing up took me over forty years. Why did it take so long? There needed to be time for a number of unusual things to happen. Well, more than one hundred fifty of them. I was born after the Second World War in a working-class neighborhood in a northern city. These are the true tales told with all of the mischief and funny detail of Real Life. I suppose that the stories say something positive about growing up. That doesn't matter to me now. Well, because I've got to tell you the story of what happened to me when ...

My daughter would say back, "Daddy, you're kidding me " I did much thinking and decided, before I became too old to think, to write an account of my "growing up." I wanted my father to do the same, but his story was never written. In one town, there was an elder, Clayton Mack, who had a stroke. While under care, he told his nurses' many stories. These ramblings were written and placed in order. Two books were then published. I suppose Clayton was the reason I attempted the same. Therefore, here I am, writing away. As my thoughts are put to prose, another purpose of doing this comes forward. Composing, the process of story writing makes one think much more of what makes a person who he is.

Book excerpt: A Kid Named Joey is one man's warm recollection of growing up in the 1940's and '50's, in the days when kids rode their bikes everywhere, dropped by the corner drugstore fountain for Cokes, played baseball till dark in each other's backyards, got paddled in school for bad behavior, and listened to radio programs before dinner every night. Joey grew up in a family where love was contagious and God was honored. His desire was to create a compilation of stories to answer the yet unasked questions of his numerous grandkids and great grandkids. Written with total honesty, the book is filled with humor that's hard to avoid.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Idyllic tales of a childhood spent in the puerile stages of suburban Great Bridge in Chesapeake, Virginia in the 1970s and 1980s. There are no excuses here, no apologies, no holding back or hiding behind false names. The tales are true, the characters are real, and they are beautiful. While some of the stories may make you laugh, scratch your head, or reflect with a familiar sadness, you will hopefully find a sense of place. Hopefully, you will recall a time when you were almost some kid doing the same insane things described in these stories, and smile with pride how these kids pulled it off. We wish everyone could have grown up and experienced life in the way it is described here, though you would have needed a slightly warped mind to keep up. Think Leave It To Beaver meets Stand By Me meets One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest and there you have it. While growing up, most children attempt something a little over the top, or assume they have come up with some new-fangled idea to get over on adults or other children. They are then usually harshly informed how SOME KID thought of it already, and tried it, and failed miserably. These are the stories of those children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book was created over the years of true stories of what happened to a family that some will say no way could happen. I promise you; there is no way this stuff could ever be made up! One person in the family loved the stories and could always tell them as they happened and pretend to be each person in every occurrence. The family had encouraged this person for years to write the stories into a book so others could laugh as well. It seemed all stories you could buy in this day and time were criminal fast pace stories, sad stories, love stories, murders, trials; well, you get the idea. It was time for a humorous book that was about real people and real stories that were honestly true. You will notice the family has a huge heart for animals and people in need, and sometimes their huge heart for animals could cause them lack of sleep but they never seemed to mind to help with some of God's chores. They were laboring, working-class people who were as honest as the day is long. They kept their nose in their own business even though they may not understand some of the stuff that was going on with their neighbors. It still was none of their business. What was their business however, was taking care of grandkids, great-grandkids, and all the animals that made up the zoo there on the farm and all the fun stuff that came along with it. They were not ashamed to tell their stories. It happens to everyone; some people want to act like it never happens to them. I promise you at some time in your life, you will step into some dog poop.

Book excerpt: Inside this book are stories of growing up in the TallapoosaRiver Valley, especially my youngest years before schoolwith Mama. It seemed to me nothing could ever go wrong as long as my mother was with me. So many times, Mama would share stories about her growing-up years and the lonely life and times she lived. Mama would often say, "Child, never grow up," and I've done my very best to honor that instruction. Mama had a strong faith in the Lord; she really depended on Him. She said sometimes it seemed like He was her only friend. Although she had very hard times, she enjoyed life. She left us on February 19, 1966. She was a wonderful, sweet mother to me and her family and friends.

Book excerpt: "Down the Memory Lane: Collections of Childhood Stories" is a collection of short stories. These stories are based on the childhood experiences and memories, which were at times full of fun and other times scary for little souls.Over the years, I have narrated some to my children, siblings and cousins; while cherishing those moments and some, I never got opportunity to share. Two stories about me were narrated by my mom as I was too small to remember them.I was born and brought up in a multi-cultural and multi-religious city in the state of India called Gujarat. My city: Surat, was a busy city by the standards of those days, but it was not so busy like today.I was brought up in a middle-class family; in times when it was not unusual to find children playing in the streets around their homes or in their neighborhoods, without fear of the strangers or neighbors harming them in any way. After coming from school, it was a routine for us: Children to come out on the streets in the evening and play with out friends till the sundown. There were no sophisticated toys or play station games in those days, so our games were simple. We used to always enjoy company of other children of our age or bit younger or older than us and play till we got too tired or were called to come inside by our moms or dads. There were children whose parents were better off financially and there were some who were not, but to us children, that did not matter! These stories give beautiful insight into childhood games and mischief and they will take you to the beautiful world of children where friendship is enjoyed to its fullest. Everything is taken lightly, and grudges are forgotten either the same day or after some days depending on their depth and intensity. One reason why I wanted to write this book, was to let the current generation of children know that life is sun when you interact with each other and play outside in sun.Play gives us opportunity to grow and get close to our friends and help build lasting relationships. We stay strong and healthy when we exercise our body instead of just sitting indoors playing with electronic gadgets. The second reason was to reinstate this idea that children are very innocent. They are not aware of their actions like adults and so while evaluating actions of a child or while punishing them, (in gentle ways of course), adults must understand them according to their thought process. Many a times we become too critical and harsh on them and take their actions too seriously and blame them for doing wrong things. But the reality is that they do not have the capability to think about consequences like adults and often do things sporadically.I hope that you will enjoy reading these stories whether you are a child or an adult. If you are a grown up, I hope you recollect some of your childhood stories while reading mine. I also hope that you share this book with your children, grandchildren, or any child who shows interest in reading or listening to them.Happy reading, With love, Mar

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up on bishop street is an endearing collection of true stories of a little boy's exuberance for life--his adventures and travails--his friendships and his wanderings. This is the delightful, but oft' sad story of a young boy growing up in a mundane, urban neighborhood with a father who provided, a mother who sensed his beauty and a brother who tormented him. It is the story of a little boy who sought to be free in a big world of constraints and expectations he could not meet. The stories are poignant, penetrating and full of adventure and pathos. Written by a child psychiatrist, growing up on bishop street captures the wonder and pains of the young child in each of us. The stories reflect the author's respect for the early life experiences which form the template for and permeate the rest of our lives.
