Book excerpt: Abstract: Dollar spot, caused by the fungus S. homoeocarpa, is a chronic and widespread disease which causes damage to home lawns, sports and golf course turfgrass. Management of this disease includes cultural practices such as adequate nitrogen fertility and dew removal but fungicide applications are required for disease-free turfgrass. With increasing reports of fungicide resistance across North America and further restriction of current fungicides, a method increase fungicide efficacy against dollar spot disease is needed. The results of replicated field studies conducted between 2003 and 2006 showed that the application of fungicides to asymptomatic turfgrass in late fall and early spring can decrease dollar spot severity the following season. In 2003-2004 replicated field trails at multiple locations showed that single and multiple fall fungicide applications alone or in combination with early spring treatments significantly reduced dollar spot the following May. In 2005-2006 replicated field trails at multiple locations showed that the timing of single fall and single spring applications affects fungicide efficacy. Special attention in both years was given to monitoring and recording daily high and low temperatures at plot locations. The goal of this work was to determine if fall fungicide applications affect dollar spot the following season, and if there was a certain weather pattern or calendar date required for maximum efficacy of these applications. For a more practical outlook, flower phenology of certain woody species was utilized to pinpoint this application time in the spring.
