Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eugenio Coseriu counts among the most important linguistic scholars of the second half of the 20th century. He is known mainly as a structuralist and a Romance linguist, but his work is in fact far more expansive in scope, including a comprehensive linguistic theory as well as writings on a wide range of issues, from semantics, syntax, typology, variational linguistics, language change, pragmatics and text linguistics to Vulgar Latin, the history of the philosophy of language and the history of Romance linguistics. Coseriu’s thought is founded on solid philosophical principles, and his life brought him into contact with a number of different academic traditions and cultures. However, for a variety of reasons (among which, the languages in which he tended to publish: Spanish, Italian, French and German), knowledge of his thought is rather marginal in the Anglo-American world. This book aims to go some way to addressing this situation by offering an overview in English of Coseriu’s main contributions to linguistics, and indeed to other disciplines. It is of general interest for the study of linguistics, the history of linguistics, and the philosophy of language, as well as for a broader reading public.

Download or read book Medieval Philosophy Redefined written by John N. Deely and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These two facts taken together --- the general notion of sign as the original initiative of Latin thought, and the use of the Latin language as the principal instrument for the development of speculative (i.e., species-specifically human) thought --- allow us for the first time to see the "medieval period" as a positively unified whole. This period forms truly and integrally the middle ages, the whole span between the end of ancient philosophy in the Greek language and the beginning of modern philosophy and science in the national languages. --

Book Synopsis Approaches to Communication by : Susan Petrilli
Download or read book Approaches to Communication written by Susan Petrilli and published by Atwood Publications. This book was released on 2008 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The framework developed by Thomas A. Sebeok in his "global semiotics" is currently the most useful for investigating the nature and function of representation in human systems. The capacity to represent immediate reality is not unique to human animals, but the capacity to frame an indefinite number of possible worlds is unique to humans. This unique aspect of representational capacity in humans has led to "true culture," requiring a way to represent all the subtleties of language, in contrast to "nonhuman culture." It is on this level that nonverbal- and verbal-form assemblages blend together functionally and systematically. - from the Preface by Marcel Danesi This book proposes approaches to communication from different viewpoints. Their common objective is to contribute to what can be designated as Global Communication Studies. In our world, communication is all-pervasive. This calls for the broadest possible vision of the global sign network and an understanding of the sense of the role each of us must play in it. Consequently, the problem of communication is closely connected to the problem of responsibility. The book is dedicated to the late Thomas A. Sebeok.
