Book excerpt: La soldadura es un importante proceso de fabricación ampliamente utilizado para la producción de estructuras metálicas y muchos otros productos. Decenas de diferentes procesos de soldadura están disponibles para uso de la industria; sin embargo, los procesos de soldadura a arco eléctrico han sido y siguen siendo los más utilizados. Estos procesos utilizan el arco (descarga eléctrica en un medio gaseoso entre dos o más electrodos) como fuente de energía para la fusión localizada de los materiales que formarán el cordón de soldadura. Durante la soldadura, el arco entrega energía en un pequeño volumen (unos pocos milímetros cúbicos) calentando el material en su interior a temperaturas superiores de aquellas encontradas en la superficie del sol. A medida que el arco se mueve a lo largo de la junta, el material depositado se enfría rápidamente, generalmente a tasas entre 10² y 10³ °C/s, y se solidifica para formar el cordón de soldadura. La corta duración de estos eventos, las altas temperaturas y los complejos intercambios de materia y energía entre la región del arco, la piscina de soldadura y su entorno, hacen que estudiar los fenómenos metalúrgicos y físicos durante la soldadura por arco, sea una tarea intrincada. Este libro trata algunos aspectos introductorios de uno de los campos que componen la ciencia transversal que es la soldadura: la física del arco eléctrico. Parte de esta obra se basa en estudios de investigación realizados en el Laboratorio de Robótica, Soldadura y Simulación (Laboratório de Robótica, Soldagem e Simulação - LRSS) de la Universidad Federal de Minas Gerais. Sin embargo, se basa principalmente en la vasta literatura de investigación desarrolladay puesta a disposición en revistas científicas y técnicas durante varias décadas por investigadores de diferentes países. El libro no contiene una presentación muy rigurosa y profunda de la física de la soldadura por arco; se planeó más bien como una presentación introductoria de algunos aspectos seleccionados de esta área, y puede ser utilizado en estudios avanzados en ciencia y tecnología de soldadura por parte de estudiantes de pregrado de Ingeniería Mecánica, Industrial, Metalúrgica o de Materiales, y también como una presentación introductoria sobre el tema para estudiantes de posgrado.
