It also gives a thorough account of the nature of surface energies and forces in nanostructures as well as adhesion in dry and wet environments. The book then explains how to perform friction measurements at the nanoscale and interpret friction data before demonstrating how micro- and nanotextured surfaces affect adhesion, friction, and wetting. The final chapters emphasize the importance of surface chemistry and molecular dynamics simulation in tribology. With numerous examples and figures throughout, this volume presents a thorough account of important advancements in tribology that offer insight into micro- and nanoscale phenomena. By enabling a better understanding of fundamental micro- and nanoscale interactions, the book helps readers effectively design and fabricate durable tribological components for various engineering and biological systems.

Book Synopsis Nuclear Radiation Detection Materials: Volume 1038 by : Arnold Burger
Download or read book Nuclear Radiation Detection Materials: Volume 1038 written by Arnold Burger and published by . This book was released on 2008-11-20 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This symposium will provide a venue for the presentation of the latest results and discussion of radiation detection materials from both experimental and theoretical standpoints. As advances are made in this area of materials, additional experimental and theoretical approaches are used to both guide the growth of materials and to characterize the materials that have a wide array of applications for detecting different types of radiation. The types of detector materials for semiconductors and scintillators include a variety of molecular compounds such as lanthanum halides, zinc oxide, lead iodide, cadmium telluride, mercuric iodide, thallium bromide, as well as others, such as cadmium zinc telluride." "An additional class of scintillators includes those based on organic compounds and glasses. Ideally, desired materials used for radiation detection have attributes such as appropriate-range bandgaps, high atomic numbers of the central element, high densities, performance at room temperature, and strong mechanical properties, and are low cost in terms of their production. There are significant gaps in the knowledge related to these materials that are very important in making radiation detector materials that are higher quality in terms of their reproducible purity, homogeneity, and mechanical integrity. The topics that are the focal point of this symposium address these issues so that much better detectors may be made in the future."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Synopsis Electro-Chemo-Mechanical Properties of Solid Electrode Surfaces by : Masahiro Seo
Download or read book Electro-Chemo-Mechanical Properties of Solid Electrode Surfaces written by Masahiro Seo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2021-09-17 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the electro-chemo-mechanical properties characteristic of and unique to solid electrode surfaces, covering interfacial electrochemistry and surface science. Electrochemical reactions such as electro-sorption, electro-deposition or film growth on a solid electrode induce changes in surface stress or film stress that lead to transformation of the surface phase or alteration of the surface film. The properties of solid electrode surfaces associated with the correlation between electrochemical and mechanical phenomena are named “electro-chemo-mechanical properties”. The book first derives the surface thermodynamics of solid electrodes as fundamentals for understanding the electro-chemo-mechanical properties. It also explains the powerful techniques for investigating the electro-chemo-mechanical properties, and reviews the arguments for derivation of surface thermodynamics of solid electrodes. Further, based on current experimental findings and theories, it discusses the importance of the contribution of surface stress to the transformation of surface phases, such as surface reconstruction and underpotential deposition in addition to the stress evolution during film growth and film reduction. Moreover, the book describes the nano-mechanical properties of solid surfaces measured by nano-indentation in relation to the electro-chemo-mechanical properties. This book makes a significant contribution to the further development of numerous fields, including electrocatalysis, materials science and corrosion science.
