This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 832 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INSECTS PROVIDE an ideal medium in which to study all the problems of physiology. But if this medium is to be used to the best advantage, the principles and peculiarities of the insect's organization must be first appreciated. It is the purpose of this book to set forth these principles so far as they are understood at the present day. There exist already many excellent text-books of general ento mology; notably those of Imms, Weber, and Snodgrass, to mention only the more recent. But these authors have necessarily been preoccupied chiefly with describing the diversity of form among insects; discussions on function being correspondingly condensed. In the present work the emphasis is reversed. Struc ture is described only to an extent sufficient to make the physiological argument intelligible. Every anatomical peculiarity, every ecological specialization, has indeed its physiological counterpart. In that sense, anatomy, physiology and ecology are not separable. But regarded from the standpoint from which the present work is written, the endless modifications that are met with among insects are but illustrations of the general principles of their physiology, which it is the aim of this book to set forth. Completeness in such a work is not possible, or desirable; but an endeavour has been made to illustrate each physiological characteristic by a few concrete examples, and to include sufficient references to guide the student to the more important sources. The physiology of insects is to some the handmaid of Economic Entomology.

Full-sized textbooks have been devoted to it; notably The Principles of Insect Physiology by the present author, the three volume Physiology of the Insecta edited by Morris Rockstein, and Insect Biochemistry by Darcy Gilmour; and articles describing the most recent advances in the physiology and biochemistry of insects appear in the Annual Review of Entomology, in Advances in Insect Physiology and elsewhere. I The Integument The key to much of the physiology of insects is to be found in the nature of their cuticle. As was first shown by Haecke1, the cuticle is the product of a single layer of epidermal cells. It is often described as being composed of non-living material; but in fact the epidermal cells give off fine filaments contained within the so-called 'pore canals', which run through the substance of the cuticle and often come within less than a micron of the surface. Cuticle Structure As described from stained sections the cuticle consists of two primary layers, the endocuticle which makes up the greater part, and a thin refractile epicuticle on the surface, usually not more than one micron in thickness.

Book Synopsis Ecological and Environmental Physiology of Insects by : Jon F. Harrison
Download or read book Ecological and Environmental Physiology of Insects written by Jon F. Harrison and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-01-26 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insects are the most ecologically important multicellular heterotrophs in terrestrial systems. They play critical roles in ecological food webs, remain devastating agricultural and medical pests, and represent the most diverse group of eukaryotes in terms of species numbers. Their dominant role among terrestrial heterotrophs arises from a number of key physiological traits, and in particular by the developmental and evolutionary plasticity of these traits. Ecological and Environmental Physiology of Insects presents a current and comprehensive overview of how the key physiological traits of insects respond to environmental variation. It forges conceptual links from molecular biology through organismal function to population and community ecology. As with other books in the Series, the emphasis is on the unique physiological characteristics of the insects, but with applications to questions of broad relevance in physiological ecology. As an aid to new researchers on insects, it also includes introductory chapters on the basics and techniques of insect physiology ecology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Employing the clear, student-friendly style that made previous editions so popular, Insect Physiology and Biochemistry, Fourth Edition presents an engaging and authoritative guide to the latest findings in the dynamic field of insect physiology. The book supplies a comprehensive picture of the current state of the function, development, and reproduction of insects. Expanded and updated, now in full colour, this fourth edition adds three new chapters on the role of the nervous system in behavior; the ‘Genomics Revolution’ in entomology; and global climate changes which have a major effect on insects, including warming and weather. It continues to challenge conventional entomological wisdom with the latest research and analytical interpretations. The text will appeal to upper undergraduate and graduate students and to practicing biologists who need to possess a firm knowledge of the broad principles of insect physiology. With detailed full colour illustrations to help explain physiological concepts and important anatomical details, it remains the most easily accessible guide to key concepts in the field.

Book Synopsis Physiological Systems in Insects by : Marc J. Klowden
Download or read book Physiological Systems in Insects written by Marc J. Klowden and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2022-09-24 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physiological Systems in Insects, Fourth Edition explores why insects have become the dominant animals on the planet. Sections describe the historical investigations that have led us to our current understanding of insect systems. Integrated within a basic physiological framework are modern molecular approaches that provide a glimpse of the genetic and evolutionary frameworks that testify to the unity of life on earth. This updated edition describes advances that have occurred in our understanding of hormone action, metamorphosis, and reproduction, along with new sections on the role of microbiomes, insecticide action and its metabolism, and a chapter on genetics, genomics and epigenetic systems. The book represents a collaborative effort by two internationally known insect physiologists who have instructed graduate courses in insect physiology. As such, it is the ideal resource for entomologists and those in other fields who may require knowledge of insect systems. - Presents updated information on key physiological principles - Covers detailed and instructive figures for visual enhancement - Provides flowing text without the interruption of citations - Includes evolutionary considerations throughout, also providing a discussion on the implications of molecular techniques and discoveries - Encourages further reading with a complete bibliography at end of each chapter
