Book excerpt: The Fundamentals of Chinese Medicine is an international collaboration of Chinese medicine experts from both China and the west, and co-written by an experienced practitioner who has been teaching the subject in western schools. This book covers the theory of traditional Chinese medicine and discusses the topic in greater depth than any English language textbook available today. An abundance of classical references are also included here. The material in this text comprises course material for a professional course of training in TCM, which is also the basic material for studying and comprehension of other more advanced courses in TCM. The main contents include the physiological basis of essence-qi, yin-yang and the five phases, followed by the theories of essence, qi and blood, fluids, and spirit. Organ manifestation, channel and collateral theory, constitutional theory, etiology and patho-mechanism, and also principles of prevention and treatment are expounded upon. The knowledge in this textbook is approximately equal to that for students of TCM colleges in China, and coincides with the requirements in the Examination Syllabus for TCM Professional Practitioners Worldwide.

Book excerpt: The Essentials of Chinese Medicine is a text book intended for international students who wish to gain a basic understanding of Chinese Medicine (CM) at the university level. The idea of writing such a text was originated from the Sino-American Consortium for the Advancement of Chinese Medicine (SACACM), which was founded in February 2000. In 1995, the British Hong Kong Administration set up a Preparatory Committee for the Development of Chinese Medicine to look into ways of bringing Chinese medical practice and herbal trade under proper control and r- ulation. After the reuni?cation of Hong Kong with mainland China in 1997, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region continued the efforts to uplift the practice of CM to a fully professional level through legislation. To help bring up a new generation of professional CM practitioners, the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) obtained approval from the Government’s univ- sity funding authority to develop a School of Chinese Medicine to prepare students who will meet the future professional requirements through public examinations. In order to establish itself quickly as a rigorous provider of university level CM education, HKBU sought alliance with eight major CM universities in the Chinese Mainland, and one US university which was interested in developing CM edu- tion within its medical college. As a result, the Consortium known as SACACM was formed, with ten founding institutions from Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Sh- dong, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Heilongjiang, Hong Kong, and the United States.

Book excerpt: "This book was first published in Taiwan to teach Chinese medical English to Chinese students. The present U.S. edition provides English-speaking students a useful introduction to the concepts of Chinese medicine and to the English terminology described in greater detail in A Practical Dictionary of Chinese Medicine (Paradigm Publications, 1998). It is particularly suitable for those beginning to learn Chinese medicine after having studied Chinese, and for those who wish to master the English terminology for the purposes of translation.Over 800 commonly used Chinese terms are organized in thematic order. Each English term is followed by the corresponding Chinese term in simplified and complex characters, as well as Pinyin transcription. The pronunciation of the English term is given in Kenyon & Knott transcription for the benefit of non-English speakers. The definitions and clinical significance of terms are written entirely in English. At the end of each chapter, there are exercises which not only provide activities for students to do in class or at home, but also furnish teachers with examples for examination questions.Three appendixes contain answers to the quizzes, present the most important characters (with examples of their usage), and teach Taiwanese students the PRC Pinyin system." -Publisher.

Book excerpt: It is clear that the majority of Chinese Medicine practitioners lack confidence in their ability to correctly diagnose and treat patient illness in the clinical setting. For most, this is not due to a lack of intelligence or motivation, but rather an educational approach that insufficiently develops the diagnostic skills necessary to navigate complex patient cases. All practitioners need effective diagnostic skills to navigate the clinical setting and treat complex patient cases. With dedicated practice, Medical Pulse Diagnosis(R) (MPD(R)) will rapidly increase your skill and success in the field of Chinese Medicine. After many years of learning and refinement through the experiences of high-volume patient practice, I am sharing what I believe is the most effective pulse diagnostic system. In this book, I will share the precise details of my unique system for determining the diagnosis of patient conditions. I will teach you how to develop the tactile sensitivity as well as the systematic logic that will guide correct pulse diagnosis and effective patient care. This text applies to all Chinese Medicine practitioners and provides clinical value to any biomedical healthcare practitioner seeking palpable insights into patient conditions. These methods have produced diagnostic accuracy concerning the health of over 30,000 patients and 500,000 patient visits over the last twenty years. My goal is to contribute this same level of diagnostic expertise to your clinical practice and your patients. Bob Doane, L.Ac. (Licensed Acupuncturist) shares the precise details of my unique system for determining the diagnosis of patient conditions. Mr. Doane, L.Ac. will teach you how to develop the tactile sensitivity as well as the systematic logic that will guide correct pulse diagnosis and effective patient care.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), with a history of thousands of years, is the crystallization of the ancient Chinese''s experiences in their struggle against diseases. It is also an integral part of the Chinese''s splendid culture. Under the influence and direction of classic Chinese philosophies, it has undergone long-term medical practice and infiltrated into, as well as absorbed from, other subjects in that point in time, thus gradually evolving into a unique medical theoretical system that contributed and is still contributing significantly to the healthcare of the Chinese and the prosperity of the Chinese nation. The basic theories of TCM are the theoretical foundations for guiding traditional Chinese preventive medicine and clinical medicine, and encompass aspects such as the philosophical foundation for TCM, understanding the effects of TCM on the physiology and pathology of the human body, and the principles in TCM for life cultivation, rehabilitation, diagnostics, and therapeutics. In this sense, the basic theories are regarded not only as an important part of TCM, but also as a compulsory course fundamental to the study and research of TCM.This book is compiled to allow the majority of readers to understand the theory of TCM and its methods of diagnosing and treating diseases in a relatively short period of time. It provides a brief introduction to the basic characteristics and theory of TCM, and a detailed schedule of learning commonly occurring diseases and patterns and their estimated 60 corresponding prescriptions. This is a great attempt in initiating more people to understand and apply the theory of TCM to diagnose and treat common diseases and provide corresponding formulas.
