Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What this book is about. The theory of sets is a vibrant, exciting math ematical theory, with its own basic notions, fundamental results and deep open problems, and with significant applications to other mathematical theories. At the same time, axiomatic set theory is often viewed as a foun dation ofmathematics: it is alleged that all mathematical objects are sets, and their properties can be derived from the relatively few and elegant axioms about sets. Nothing so simple-minded can be quite true, but there is little doubt that in standard, current mathematical practice, "making a notion precise" is essentially synonymous with "defining it in set theory. " Set theory is the official language of mathematics, just as mathematics is the official language of science. Like most authors of elementary, introductory books about sets, I have tried to do justice to both aspects of the subject. From straight set theory, these Notes cover the basic facts about "ab stract sets," including the Axiom of Choice, transfinite recursion, and car dinal and ordinal numbers. Somewhat less common is the inclusion of a chapter on "pointsets" which focuses on results of interest to analysts and introduces the reader to the Continuum Problem, central to set theory from the very beginning.

Download or read book Cantorian Set Theory and Limitation of Size written by Michael Hallett and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cantor's ideas formed the basis for set theory and also for the mathematical treatment of the concept of infinity. The philosophical and heuristic framework he developed had a lasting effect on modern mathematics, and is the recurrent theme of this volume. Hallett explores Cantor's ideas and, in particular, their ramifications for Zermelo-Frankel set theory.

Book Synopsis Handbook of the History of General Topology by : C.E. Aull
Download or read book Handbook of the History of General Topology written by C.E. Aull and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first one of a work in several volumes, treating the history of the development of topology. The work contains papers which can be classified into 4 main areas. Thus there are contributions dealing with the life and work of individual topologists, with specific schools of topology, with research in topology in various countries, and with the development of topology in different periods. The work is not restricted to topology in the strictest sense but also deals with applications and generalisations in a broad sense. Thus it also treats, e.g., categorical topology, interactions with functional analysis, convergence spaces, and uniform spaces. Written by specialists in the field, it contains a wealth of information which is not available anywhere else.

This book was released on 2011-03-17 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book consists of 35 extended chapters which have been based on selected submissions to the poster session organized during the 3rd Asian Conference on Intelligent Information and Database Systems (20-22 April 2011 in Daegu, Korea). The book is organized into four parts, which are information retrieval and management, data mining and computational intelligence, service composition and user-centered approach, and intelligent management and e-business, respectively. All chapters in the book discuss theoretical and practical issues related to integration of artificial intelligence and database technologies in order to develop various intelligent information systems in many different domains. Such combination of artificial intelligence and database technologies has been regarded as one of the important interdisciplinary subfields of modern computer science, due to the sustainable development of networked information systems. Especially, service-oriented architecture and global multimedia systems used on a number of different purpose call for these developments. The book will be of interest to postgraduate students, professors and practitioners in the areas of artificial intelligence and database systems to modern information environments. The editors hope that readers of this volume can find many inspiring ideas and influential practical examples and use them in their future work.

Book Synopsis Integral Equations: A Practical Treatment, from Spectral Theory to Applications by : David Porter
Download or read book Integral Equations: A Practical Treatment, from Spectral Theory to Applications written by David Porter and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1990-09-28 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a rigorous and practical treatment of integral equations. These are significant because they occur in many problems in mathematics, physics and engineering and they offer a powerful (sometimes the only) technique for solving these problems. The book aims to tackle the solution of integral equations using a blend of abstract 'structural' results and more direct, down-to-earth mathematics. The interplay between these two approaches is a central feature of the text and it allows a thorough account to be given of many of the types of integral equation which arise in application areas. Since it is not always possible to find explicit solutions of the problems posed, much attention is devoted to obtaining qualitative information and approximations to the solutions, with the associated error estimates. This treatment is intended for final year mathematics undergraduates, postgraduates and research workers in application areas such as numerical analysis and fluid mechanics.
