Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents a laboratory study in styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) polymer modified asphalt including the dispersion process of SBS in asphalt and the asphalt performance without chemical reaction. Fluorescence microscope was adopted to characterize the dispersion of SBS in asphalt. The effects of various factors on modified asphalt were studied by means of the SBS particle size distribution, which was obtained by micrographs using the Image-Pro Plus image analysis program. The fundamental characteristics of SBS modified asphalt samples were determined using conventional test methods. The test results indicate that higher shear rate and longer shear time could promote the SBS dispersion in the low range, but there exists a critical shear rate and shear time. The higher shear temperature could improve the dispersion of SBS in asphalt. When the shear temperature increases to a certain number, the SBS particle size decreases, which do have adverse effects on the performance of SBS modified asphalt. With the content of SBS increasing, the particle size distribution becomes wider and the softening point of the modified asphalt increases, while the penetration and ductility of modified asphalt decrease. When the content of SBS is constant, as SBS particle size decreases, the softening point and viscosity increase, penetration decreases, and the ductility of SBS modified asphalt first increases slightly then decreases. However, when the content of SBS varies, as the particle size of SBS decreases, the softening point and viscosity of SBS modified asphalt increase, while penetration and ductility of SBS modified asphalt decrease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of polymer-modified bitumens has gained importance in road construction over the past few years. The fields of application are relatively varied and include waterproofing sheets as well as binders for surface dressings, porous asphalt, mastic asphalt and asphalt concrete. Those polymers mainly used are styrene-butadiene-styrene SBS copolymers, ethylene-vinyl acetate EVA and atactic polypropylene APP. In addition to adequate and constant quality of the modified binder, the user is entitled to require a qualitative identification and quantitative determination of the polymer incorporated in a bitumen. Infrared absorption spectroscopy is suggested as an appropriate technique for identifying and determining polymer components in the case of SBS and EVA. Two techniques of preparing samples for measurement and two methods of quantitative interpretation are described. As for APP, its quantitative determination is based on selective solubility in different solvents and infrared spectroscopy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design and construction of “long and deep” tunnels, i.e. tunnels under mountains, characterised by either considerable length and/or overburden, represent a considerable challenge. The scope of this book is not to instruct how to design and construct such tunnels but to share a method to identify the potential hazards related to the process of designing and constructing long and deep tunnels, to produce a relevant comprehensive analysis and listing, to quantify the probability and consequences, and to design proper mitigation measures and countermeasures. The design, developed using probabilistic methods, is verified during execution by means of the so called Plan for Advance of the Tunnel (PAT) method, which allows adapting the design and control parameters of the future stretches of the tunnel to the results of the stretches already finished, using the monitoring data base. Numerous criteria are given to identify the key parameters, necessary for the PAT procedure. Best practices of excavation management with the help of real time monitoring and control are also provided. Furthermore cost and time evaluation systems are analysed. Finally, contractual aspects related to construction by contract are investigated, for best development and application of models more appropriate for tunnelling-construction contracts. The work will be of interest to practising engineers, designers, consultants and students in mining, underground, tunnelling, transportation and construction engineering, as well as to foundation and geological engineers, urban planners/developers and architects.

Book excerpt: This paper elaborates on the characterisation of styrene butadiene styrene, ethyl vinyl acetate, low density polyethylene, polypropylene wax and hydroxylterminated polybutadiene modified asphalts by penetration temperature sensitivity, thermogravimetric analysis, penetration ratio, cohesion, adhesion, stability, tensile strength and flexural fatigue test. The benefits obtained by the modification of asphalt with polymers are improvement in quality of asphalt as defined by increased cohesion, adhesion, elastic recovery and reduced temperature sensitivity. The significant characteristics of polymer modified asphalts are high stability, tensile strength, stiffness and extended fatigue life. The effects of wax in waxy asphalts is reduced by incorporation of polymers.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bitumen is most commonly used as a binder in road pavement construction. Due to the harsh climate changes and heavier traffic loads, bitumen tends to undergo rutting and cracking which severely limits its service life and durability. Bitumen-based binders containing various proportions of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) triblock copolymer, crumb rubber (CR) and fumed nanosilica have been synthesized. The modified binders have been studied for rheological properties, storage stability, nanoparticle dispersion, and thermal resistance. In addition, binder-sand composites have been prepared in a binder/sand weight ratio of 1:9 and have been tested for three-point flexural bend tests. Addition of nanosilica dramatically improves the rheological properties of bitumen with enhancements as great as 400% and the compatibility between bitumen and polymers is enhanced. In addition, CR-modified bitumen demonstrates a similar level of performance as SBS-modified bitumen, when both are used synergistically with nanosilica, which leads to beneficial environmental and economic impacts. Finally, the interfacial mechanisms between bitumen, polymers and nanosilica that are responsible for modification of bitumen using Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy and Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) were investigated and correlated with the performance of the materials.
