Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fundamental Questions Its chapters take up in order the perennial problem for all ideal views, -the question of suffering and sin; the difficulties for any religious view which gather around prayer, - the central relation of revelation and response between God and men; the question of how we may best think of Christ, - the central fact of the Christian reli gion; and then, in the light of these conclusions, four large problems for Christian thought and life: the questions of life's fundamental decision, of life's fundamental paradox of liberty and law, of Christian unity, and of Christianity as a world religion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Main Questions in Religion: A Study of Fundamentals; Crane Theological School Lectures and Other Essays The four lectures are printed exactly as they were delivered, at Tufts College, Massachusetts, in May, 1915. They aim to deal candidly, searchingly and constructively with some of the ultimate problems of human life. The two other essays are added because the mat ters of which they treat are of pressing importance. The purification of Christianity through the elimina tion of its historic accretions of error is not more than half accomplished yet. The process must be carried much nearer completion before this exalted religion can achieve its rightful and powerful leadership of the modern world. In proportion as this cleansing, recti fying work goes on, Christianity will become more and more the effectual spiritual ally of the great demo cratic movement, which alone in these dark days ap pears to hold out the promise of preserving the price less principle of liberty in the momentous develop ments impending among the nations. Together a purified Christianity and a spiritualized Democracy will establish the reign of love and freedom, alike in the individual heart and in all social relationships, and thus bring in the era of permanent peace and uni versal prosperity for which the weary race has waited too long. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and the Need of Atonement As the title indicates, the main object of this book is not to offer a new theory of the Atonement. Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short View of Great Questions 2. The theory of Theology - that man is created at his birth with an immortal soul which survives the death of his body. 3. The theory of Reincarnation, sometimes called Metempsychosis, or the Transmigration of Souls - that man has an immortal soul which existed before his birth and survives the death of his body. These three theories are very old, and it is not of record that the mind of man has conceived any other, differing from them in its basic form. Of the three, one must be true, and two false. We are at the point where there are three forks to the road, and only one is the right way. It is not the policy of wisdom to halt, or to proclaim that there is no way out. It is even better to advance on the wrong road than to stand still; for the wrong road when explored must yield some evidence that it is the way of error. It is not likely that each of the three theories is sustained by exactly the same amount of evidence, or that an inquiry would prove each to be precisely as reasonable as the others. The true one must have more evidence to support it than the false ones, the truth being stronger than that which is untrue. Focusing on the specialty of "medicine for women"(fuke), Yi-Li Wu explores the material and ideological issues associated with childbearing in the late imperial period. She draws on a rich array of medical writings that circulated in seventeenth- to nineteenth-century China to analyze the points of convergence and contention that shaped people's views of women's reproductive diseases. These points of contention touched on fundamental issues: How different were women's bodies from men's? What drugs were best for promoting conception and preventing miscarriage? Was childbirth inherently dangerous? And who was best qualified to judge? Wu shows that late imperial medicine approached these questions with a new, positive perspective.

This is particularly true of History. Pupils generally dislike review, - perhaps because they find how little they remember of their work. Debating a question stimulates the student to muster all the facts he has once been over, to his service. Thus, associated and reviewed, he will fix the important things in his mind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world?
