This book was released on 2011-06-14 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Yang-Mills theory of gauge interactions is a prime example of interdisciplinary mathematics and advanced physics. Its historical development is a fascinating window into the ongoing struggle of mankind to understand nature. The discovery of gauge fields and their properties is the most formidable landmark of modern physics. The expression of the gauge field strength as the curvature associated to a given connection, places quantum field theory in the same geometrical footing as the gravitational field of general relativity which is naturally written in geometrical terms. The understanding of such geometrical property may help one day to write a unified field theory starting from symmetry principles. Of course, there are remarkable differences between the standard gauge fields and the gravitational field, which must be understood by mathematicians and physicists before attempting such unification. In particular, it is important to understand why gravitation is not a standard gauge field. This book presents an account of the geometrical properties of gauge field theory, while trying to keep the equilibrium between mathematics and physics. At the end we will introduce a similar approach to the gravitational field.
Book Synopsis From the Universe to the Elementary Particles by : Ulrich Ellwanger
Download or read book From the Universe to the Elementary Particles written by Ulrich Ellwanger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-05 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the author leads the reader, step by step and without any advanced mathematics, to a clear understanding of the foundations of modern elementary particle physics and cosmology. He also addresses current and controversial questions on topics such as string theory. The book contains gentle introductions to the theories of special and general relativity, and also classical and quantum field theory. The essential aspects of these concepts are understood with the help of simple calculations; for example, the force of gravity as a consequence of the curvature of the space-time. Also treated are the Big Bang, dark matter and dark energy, as well as the presently known interactions of elementary particles: electrodynamics, the strong and the weak interactions including the Higgs boson. Finally, the book sketches as yet speculative theories: Grand Unification theories, supersymmetry, string theory and the idea of additional dimensions of space-time. Since no higher mathematical or physics expertise is required, the book is also suitable for college and university students at the beginning of their studies. Hobby astronomers and other science enthusiasts seeking a deeper insight than can be found in popular treatments will also appreciate this unique book.

Download or read book Fundamentals of Cosmic Particle Physics written by Maxim Khlopov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-09 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This current updated and expanded text reflects the large number of scientific advances, both theoretically and experimentally, within the discipline of cosmoparticle physics in the last 10 years. Some of the topics that have been added, updated include but are not limited to; HND or CMD+HND scenarios being implemented into sterile neutrino scenarios, the ramifications of extending the forms of dark matter with respect to our view of neutrinos, the origin of baryon matter and the need for non-baryonic matter in current theories, problems the existence of dark matters raises with respect to cosmoparticle physics and the relationship with (meta) stable (super) weakly interacting particles predicted by the extension of the standard model, restrictions on baryon and lepton photons, as well as problems associated with cosmological expansion just to name a few. These and many other topics are readdressed in light of recent both experimental and theoretical developments. Other areas of that will be of interest to the reader include the puzzles presented by direct and indirect effects of dark matter (e.g, results of experiments such as DAMA/NaI, DAMA/LIBRA and PAMELA) may lead to nontrivial new solutions for the problem of its nature, like the existence of new stable families of quarks and leptons and composite dark matter scenario. The present work will be of interest to any researcher interested in this fascinating field dealing with fundamental interactions of the micro- and macroworld.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Particle and Astroparticle Physics by : Alessandro De Angelis
Download or read book Introduction to Particle and Astroparticle Physics written by Alessandro De Angelis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-05 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, written by researchers who had been professionals in accelerator physics before becoming leaders of groups in astroparticle physics, introduces both fields in a balanced and elementary way, requiring only a basic knowledge of quantum mechanics on the part of the reader. The new profile of scientists in fundamental physics ideally involves the merging of knowledge in astroparticle and particle physics, but the duration of modern experiments is such that people cannot simultaneously be practitioners in both. Introduction to Particle and Astroparticle Physics is designed to bridge the gap between the fields. It can be used as a self-training book, a consultation book, or a textbook providing a “modern” approach to particles and fundamental interactions.
Book Synopsis The Origin of Mass by : John Iliopoulos
Download or read book The Origin of Mass written by John Iliopoulos and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery of a new elementary particle at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in 2012 made headlines in world media. Since we already know of a large number of elementary particles, why did this latest discovery generate so much excitement? This small book reveals that this particle provides the key to understanding one of the most extraordinary phenomena which occurred in the early Universe. It introduces the mechanism that made possible, within tiny fractions of a second after the Big Bang, the generation of massive particles. The Origin of Mass is a guided tour of cosmic evolution, from the Big Bang to the elementary particles we study in our accelerators today. The guiding principle of this book is a concept of symmetry which, in a profound and fascinating way, seems to determine the structure of the Universe.

Book Synopsis Non-Linear Dynamics and Fundamental Interactions by : Faqir Khanna
Download or read book Non-Linear Dynamics and Fundamental Interactions written by Faqir Khanna and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-06-26 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers presented at the NATO Advanced Research Institute on "Non-Linear Dynamics and Fundamental Interactions" held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from Oct.10-16,2004. The main objective of the Workshop was to bring together people working in areas of Fundamental physics relating to Quantum Field Theory, Finite Temperature Field theory and their applications to problems in particle physics, phase transitions and overlap regions with the areas of Quantum Chaos. The other important area is related to aspects of Non-Linear Dynamics which has been considered with the topic of chaology. The applications of such techniques are to mesoscopic systems, nanostructures, quantum information, particle physics and cosmology. All this forms a very rich area to review critically and then find aspects that still need careful consideration with possible new developments to find appropriate solutions. There were 29 one-hour talks and a total of seven half-hour talks, mostly by the students. In addition two round table discussions were organised to bring the important topics that still need careful consideration. One was devoted to questions and unsolved problems in Chaos, in particular Quantum Chaos. The other round table discussion considered the outstanding problems in Fundamental Interactions. There were extensive discussions during the two hours devoted to each area. Applications and development of new and diverse techniques was the real focus of these discussions. The conference was ably organised by the local committee consisting of D.U.
Book Synopsis Astronomy, Cosmology and Fundamental Physics by : Michele Caffo
Download or read book Astronomy, Cosmology and Fundamental Physics written by Michele Caffo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the development of Fundamental Physics on one side, and of Astronomy/Cosmology on the other side, periods of parallell, relatively independent progress seem to alternate with others of intense interaction and mutual influence. To this latter case belong the very beginnings of Modern Physics, with Galileo and Newton. There is now a widespread feeling that another of such flourishing periods may have started some ten years ago, with the advent of Unified Theories and the introduction of Inflationary Cosmologies. The interaction between the two disciplines has become tighter ever since, spurring studies of e. g. astronomical and particle Dark Matter candidates, Superstrings and Cosmic Strings, phase transitions in the Early Universe, etc. etc. Then the recent birth of Neutrino Astronomy has added further flavor to this splendid conjunction. It was indeed with the clear perception of this trend that six years ago CERN and ESO decided to jointly organize a series of symposia focusing on the interactions between Astronomy, Cosmology, and Fundamental Physics, to be held about every two years. The aim of these meetings is to bring together astronomers, cosmologists, and particle physicists to exchange information, to discuss scientific issues of common interest, and to take note of the latest devolopments in each discipline that are relevant to the other. The First ESO-CERN Symposium was held at CERN (Geneva) on November 21-25, 1983. Then for its Second edition the ESO-CERN Symposium moved to Garching bei Miinchen, where ESO headquarters are located, and took place on March 17-21, 1986.

Book Synopsis Physics, Martinus Cosmology and the Theory of Everything by : Leif Pettersson
Download or read book Physics, Martinus Cosmology and the Theory of Everything written by Leif Pettersson and published by BalboaPress. This book was released on 2012-03-22 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A completely New Understanding of Reality! Presenting FET, a new model that meets physicists' criteria for what they term The Theory of Everything and provides answers to many unsolved mysteries of physics. FET describes the qualitative vacuum energies, the Fundamental Energies in the zero-point filed underlying and constituting the entire physical world, explaining dark matter, dark energy, particles, mass, Higgs field, gravity, space-time and much more. Leif Pettersson has succeeded in presenting this complex, astounding material in a clear-cut, rational and comprehensive way. The subject is highly topical and of great public interest it connects to the research at CERN and it also matches the presentation of science and popular science in today's media. The book is richly illustrated in color. Physicists have worked intensively for a long time to understand our physical world. They have also been struggling to unify the four forces of nature: gravity, electromagnetism and the strong and weak nuclear forces into a Theory of Everything, but so far without success. In this book Leif Pettersson presents a groundbreaking and very exciting material with theories based on the intuitive knowledge contained in Martinus Cosmology. These theories demonstrate a new model, The Fundamental Energy Theory FET, that without any contradiction unifies the four fundamental forces of nature, and in fact gives us The Theory of Everything! Hypotheses are presented that may explain the mechanisms behind Einsteins General and Special Theories of Relativity, quantum physics with its hypothetical gravitons, Higgs particles etc. and the enigmatic dark matter, dark energy and a lot more. The Fundamental Energy Theory offers a logical, coherent key to many of the unsolved mysteries of physics, e.g. those being currently studied in the worlds biggest research project so far, the particle accelerator in CERN. The book is made available by New Cosmic Paradigm (NCP), an independent organization representing and working with the branch of the intuitive knowledge contained in Martinus Cosmology that is building bridges to Science, focusing on the great issues about Life, Consciousness and Reality posed by humanity and science. This branch is especially represented by Per Bruus-Jensen, former trainee and collaborator with Martinus. Physics, Martinus Cosmolgy and The Theory of Everything The Fundamental Energy Theory FET by Leif Pettersson is an important addition to this field.
