Book excerpt: Just as the Wright Brothers combined science and practice to finally realize the dream of flight, Ryan and Robert Quinn combine research and personal experience to demonstrate how to reach a psychological state that elevates us and those around us to greater heights of achievement, integrity, openness, and empathy. It's the psychological equivalent of aerodynamic lift, and it is the fundamental state of leadership. This book draws on recent advances in positive psychology and organizational science to describe four questions that, when asked in any situation, will help us experience the fundamental state of leadership. Engaging personal stories illustrate how the Quinns and others have applied these concepts at work, at home, and in the community. --

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author's writings, and especially the seminars for which he has become famous, have provoked intense controversies in French analytic circles, requiring as they do a radical reappraisal of the legacy bequeathed by Freud. This volume is based on a year's seminar, which is of particular importance because he was addressing a larger, less specialist audience than ever before, amongst whom he could not assume familiarity with his work. For his listeners then, and for his readers now, he wanted "to introduce a certain coherence into the major concepts on which psycho-analysis is based", namely the unconscious, repetition, the transference and the drive. In re-defining these four concepts he explores the question that, as he puts it, moves from "Is psycho-analysis a science?" to "What is a science that includes psycho-analysis?"

Book excerpt: The Conference on Nuclear Masses and their Determination which was held at the Max Planck I nstitute in Mainz from 10 to 12 July 1956 resulted in the formation by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics of a Commission on Atomic Masses and Related Constants. Under the auspices of this Commission conferences covering these subjects were held in Hamilton, Ontario (12-16 September, 1960), in Vienna (15-19 July 1963) and in Winnipeg (28 August-1 September 1967). After the last of these conferences the Commission felt that the position regarding nuclear masses was reasonably good and that as a consequence the fundamental constants should get more emphasis in future conferences. For this reason they were very pleased to accept an offer from the National Physical Laboratory to accept the main burden of organizing the Fourth International Conference on Atomic Masses and Fundamental Constants. An Organizing Committee was appointed with the members: J. H. Sanders, Chairman B. W. Petley, Secretary A. Horsfield, Treasurer P. Dean A. H. Wapstra. They were assisted by a Program Committee consisting of: A. H. Wapstra, Chairman E. R. Cohen A. Horsfield W. H. Johnson, Jr. J. H. Sanders J. Terrien.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is American politics so intense and emotionally competitive today, and how did we get here? In The Fundamental Voter, John H. Aldrich, Suhyen Bae, and Bailey K. Sanders explain why the notion that we are divided into tribal loyalties is, at best, only partially correct, and discuss how the divisions rest on much more substantive politics than they once did. In the 1950s and 1960s, the American public based voting primarily on partisan loyalties. Landslide presidential elections were once common, but over the last forty years, they have converged to very closely contested elections. Congressional elections were increasingly incumbent centered before 1984 and decreasingly so afterward. These changes reflect the changing nature of fundamental forces that shape the public's electoral opinions and voting behavior. From a single such fundamental, partisan identification, the electorate now rests on five fundamental forces: party, ideology, issues, race, and economics. Since the 1980s, these fundamentals have grown increasingly important and increasingly aligned, such that voters are now sorted into two increasingly bitterly divided sides. Believing that the other side is on the wrong side of nearly everything of political relevance, voters, like officials, have come to deeply dislike the opposition, a state of affairs that threatens to undermine the stability of democratic institutions in the United States.

Book excerpt: Life is not accessible to all, but is somehow the default. We are somewhat required to live until we achieve enough maturity and consciousness to determine what life even is. All over the world the life that is experienced comes with a vast array of complexity. Some of this complexity makes it simply hard to survive, much less thrive. Even more confusing are the barriers that become created artificially over time. Despite the nature of any barrier that exists in life, they are all very real, artificially created or not. Fortunately, just as there are infinite complexities as they relate to difficulties in life, there are also infinite complexities for peace and love. This text serves as a supporting reference to teach the most effective and life changing fundamentals to allow the whole of humanity to not just survive, but thrive. The path this text will open for many is not one that is accepted by all, but it is one that is open to all. It is also not the only path in life. Many traditions and practices both secular and spiritual exists that can very much achieve the same goal of Ceremonial Magick. If you gather nothing else from this text, understand that your life is yours, and the assertion of this text is that you should be wholly yourself no matter the path you take. Do what benefits you, but bring good to all as you do so.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic idea, simple and revolutionary at the same time, to replace the concept of a point particle with a one-dimensional string, has opened up a whole new field of research. Even today, four decades later, its multifaceted consequences are still not fully conceivable. Up to now string theory has offered a new way to view each particle: as different excitations of the same fundamental object. It has celebrated success in discovering the graviton in its spectrum, and it has naturally led scientists to posit space-times with more than four dimensions—which in turn has triggered numerous interesting developments in fields as varied as condensed matter physics and pure mathematics. This book collects pedagogical lectures by leading experts in string theory, introducing the non-specialist reader to some of the newest developments in the field. The carefully selected topics are at the cutting edge of research in string theory and include new developments in topological strings, or AdS/CFT dualities, as well as newly emerging subfields such as doubled field theory and holography in the hydrodynamic regime. The contributions to this book have been selected and arranged in such a way as to form a self-contained, graduate level textbook.

Book excerpt: One can hardly expect to become a champion over night by merely reading a book on handball although it is possible that he considerably augment his ability with its guidance and serious application. In this instance, the source, which can be read in an hour or so, should first be covered carefully in order to become better acquainted with the game and with the philosophy of the would-be instructor. As the book is reviewed in subsequent lessons, the student should stop frequently to ponder over his errors committed on the court, to "act out" new fundamentals as they are explained, to think through certain suggestions pertaining to strategy and to jot down a tentative routine for his next practice session. In short, the author would like to volunteer as the reader's instructor for the next few months.
