Book Synopsis The UNESCO Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights by : H. ten Have
Download or read book The UNESCO Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights written by H. ten Have and published by UNESCO. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October 2005, UNESCO Member States adopted by acclamation the Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights. For the first time in the history of bioethics, some 190 countries committed themselves and the international community to respect and apply fundamental ethical principles related to medicine, the life sciences and associated technologies. This publication provides a new impetus to the dissemination of the Declaration, and is part of the organisation's continuous effort to contribute to the understanding of its principles worldwide. The authors, who were almost all involved in the elaboration of the text of the Declaration, were asked to respond on each article: Why was it included? What does it mean? How can it be applied? Their responses shed light on the historical background of the text and its evolution throughout the drafting process. They also provide a reflection on its relevance to previous declarations and bioethical literature, and its potential interpretation and application in challenging and complex bioethical debates.

This textbook fills a niche with its evidence-based, multi-professional approach and global perspective ensured by the international team of editors and contributing authors. In the absence of an international curriculum for the study of palliative medicine, this textbook provides essential guidance for those both embarking upon a career in palliative medicine or already established in the field, and the structure and content have been constructed very much with this in mind. With an emphasis on providing a service anywhere in the world, including the important issue of palliative care in the developing nations, Textbook of Palliative Medicine offers a genuine alternative to the narrative approach of its competitors, and is an ideal complement to them. It is essential reading for all palliative care physicians in training and in practice, as well as palliative care nurses and other health professionals in the palliative care team

Book Synopsis Matter of Breath by : Guillaume de Stexhe
Download or read book Matter of Breath written by Guillaume de Stexhe and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2000 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book submits for discussion the first results of an undertaking that is still going on. It aims to stimulate a broad reflection on the general question of the meaning of ethics and ethics teaching in the context of professional practice. In doing so, it explores what might be called the transverse foundations of professional ethics. The authors, all of them philosophers engaged in educating future professionals, took the risk of putting forward a vision which is more inspirational than informative. Their approach to ethics is in-depth and wide-ranging, appropriate to what ethics is : a positive, creative dynamic, less concerned with respecting certain rules or applying certain procedures than with the inventive significance of a sensible practice or a meaningful life, both for individuals and for institutions or societies as a whole. This volume, then, is offered primarily as an instrument and source of inspiration (and perhaps also as course material) for anyone involved in ethics education who wants to reflect on professional life and to conceive their courses as going beyond a narrowly deontological, pragmatic or informative point of view.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second edition of a well received book that reviews classical epidemiological and clinical research designs, with a specific focus on aging. Chapters cover basic topics like the scientific method, ethics, and the consequences of certain exclusion criteria. The work also includes a look at clinical concepts like multimorbidity, frailty and functionality. New material includes chapters such as geroscience, health systems research, big data and data mining, financing and future of aging research. The authors reveal the issues and challenges for researchers of age and aging, and also consider, from basic to clinical, and from clinical to public policies of social and health care. The focus on aging is what gives this book its valuable perspective on research methodology. All authors have considerable experience in aging, geriatrics or gerontology, and each chapter includes both a theoretical framework and practical examples of studies in aging. Readers will discover study designs that are reviewed for basic structure, main flaws and advantages, and are analyzed for specific conditions and variables regarding aging. This text is suited to both health care professionals caring for older adults, and researchers who are new to research in aging. It is relevant across the disciplines, including medicine, psychology, social sciences and dentistry, and it supports learning with graphs and figures.

Book Synopsis Ibero-American Bioethics by : Léo Pessini
Download or read book Ibero-American Bioethics written by Léo Pessini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-16 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first in a series of planned volumes focused on preserving the character of the development of bioethics in particular cultural contexts. As the first of these volumes, Leo Pessini, Christian de Paul de Barchifontaine, and Fernando Lolas Stepke’s work has succeeded well. It has brought together accounts by sch- ars who were crucial to the emergence of bioethics in the Ibero-American cultural domain. This trail-blazing work in the history of bioethics will be of enduring s- nificance. I am deeply in their debt for having shouldered this far from easy task. Bioethics is the product of very particular socio-historical developments. Most prominent among them have been (1) the secularization of the dominant culture of North America, Western Europe, and now Central and South America as well, (2) a deflation of the status and authority of physicians as moral authorities able to guide their own profession, and (3) the salience of a post-traditional animus that gives c- tral place to persons as isolated atomic sources of moral authority. Bioethics initially took shape in North America as a post-Christian, post-professional, post-traditional social movement. This bioethics sought to establish a moral discourse for the public forum, a moral practice able to give practical guidance in hospitals and other insti- tions, and a body of undergirding and justifying theoretical reflections.

Book excerpt: The Pan American Sanitary Bureau gathers information on, and examines issues relating to, the disparities in health conditions and services in the Americas, especially as they relate to socio-economic indicators such as education, income, class, ethnicity and race, geographic location and gender. The concept of equity has emerged as a guiding principle for the Bureau's work. The articles gathered in this publication discuss how this idea can underpin the Bureau's work at the operational level, and can be incorporated into technical co-operation activities. Many of the perspectives expressed in the collection come from conceptual work developed through the Bureau's ongoing work with collaborating institutions, such as the Rockefeller Foundation and the World Bank, as well as academic and professional bodies in the region.

Book Synopsis 1926-2016 Fritz Jahr's Bioethics by : Amir Muzur

Book excerpt: The ethics of valuing bios in all their forms and shapes has been an essential part of great and successful cultures from the millennia-old Vedic tradition of 'tattvamasi'-this is also you: this plant, this animal, this microbe, this ecosystem-to the simple hands-on call of Jesus's 'love your neighbor.' But as a term bioethics was coined 90 years ago by Fritz Jahr, an educator and pastor in Halle in his Bioethical Imperative 'Respect every Living Being as an end in itself and treat it, if possible, as such.' This book examines the development of Fritz Jahr's concept of bioethics over the last ninety years. Book Synopsis Leadership and Organizational Sustainability by : Elia Socorro Díaz Nieto
Download or read book Leadership and Organizational Sustainability written by Elia Socorro Díaz Nieto and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-27 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents a new type of leadership focused on sustainable human development and organizational sustainability, which is based on the self-realization of the person of the leader, which means the satisfaction of their needs, according to the scale of Abraham Maslow, through integral human development in all aspects of life. Because the term "leader" appears to refer to anyone with the authority to confer a position with subordinates, the reality within organizations has shown that a leader must go further and demonstrate commitment, awareness, and concern for the common good. Which person has these characteristics? People who have had more opportunity to develop in different areas of their being, resulting in them being conceived as more educated. The qualities in a person are the basis of leadership. Education and practice are much more important than all hereditary and genetic codes. This volume explores the various ways of making explicit the dimensions of social, economic, and environmental sustainability through knowledge management that addresses the identification, collection, processing, circulation, use, exchange, and preservation of knowledge within operating systems and the context of organizations, considering issues that contribute to sustainability – human and organizational – where the leader is the main actor and the means is knowledge management.
