Book Synopsis Part I: Physical Chemistry. Part II: Solid State Physics by : Arthur S. Wightman
Download or read book Part I: Physical Chemistry. Part II: Solid State Physics written by Arthur S. Wightman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth volume of the Collected Works is devoted to Wigners contribution to physical chemistry, statistical mechanics and solid-state physics. One corner stone was his introduction of what is now called the Wigner function, while his paper on adiabatic perturbations foreshadowed later work on Berry phases. Although few in number, Wigners articles on solid-state physics laid the foundations for the modern theory of the electronic structure of metals.

Book Synopsis Green's Functions For Solid State Physicists by : Doniach S
Download or read book Green's Functions For Solid State Physicists written by Doniach S and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-06-06 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how the analytic properties in the complex energy plane of the Green's functions of many particle systems account for the physical effects (level shifts, damping, instabilities) characteristic of interacting systems. It concentrates on general physical principles and, while it does not discuss experiments in detail, includes introductions to topics of current research interest, such as singularities (X-ray, Kondo) associated with transient perturbations in an electron gas, the Mott metal-insulator transition in correlated electron systems, and the phenomenon of high Tc superconductivity. This invaluable book grew out of a course of graduate lectures given by S Doniach at the University of London. It will appeal to beginning graduate students in theoretical solid state physics as an introduction to more comprehensive or more specialized texts and also to experimentalists who would like a quick view of the subject. A basic knowledge of solid state physics and quantum mechanics at graduate level is assumed./a

Book Synopsis Optical Properties of Solids by : Frederick Wooten
Download or read book Optical Properties of Solids written by Frederick Wooten and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical Properties of Solids covers the important concepts of intrinsic optical properties and photoelectric emission. The book starts by providing an introduction to the fundamental optical spectra of solids. The text then discusses Maxwell's equations and the dielectric function; absorption and dispersion; and the theory of free-electron metals. The quantum mechanical theory of direct and indirect transitions between bands; the applications of dispersion relations; and the derivation of an expression for the dielectric function in the self-consistent field approximation are also encompassed. The book further tackles current-current correlations; the fluctuation-dissipation theorem; and the effect of surface plasmons on optical properties and photoemission. People involved in the study of the optical properties of solids will find the book invaluable.

Book Synopsis Fundamentals of the Physics of Solids by : Jenö Sólyom
Download or read book Fundamentals of the Physics of Solids written by Jenö Sólyom and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-11-18 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reader is holding the second volume of a three-volume textbook on sol- state physics. This book is the outgrowth of the courses I have taught for many years at Eötvös University, Budapest, for undergraduate and graduate students under the titles Solid-State Physics and Modern Solid-State Physics. The main motivation for the publication of my lecture notes as a book was that none of the truly numerous textbooks covered all those areas that I felt should be included in a multi-semester course. Especially, if the course strives to present solid-state physics in a uni?ed structure, and aims at d- cussing not only classic chapters of the subject matter but also (in more or less detail) problems that are of great interest for today’s researcher as well. Besides, the book presents a much larger material than what can be covered in a two- or three-semester course. In the ?rst part of the ?rst volume the analysis of crystal symmetries and structure goes into details that certainly cannot be included in a usual course on solid-state physics. The same applies, among others, to the discussion of the methods used in the determination of band structure, the properties of Fermi liquids and non-Fermi liquids, and the theory of unconventional superconductors in the present and third volumes. These parts can be assigned as supplementary reading for interested students, or can be discussed in advanced courses.
