Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BrunoBuchberger This book is a synopsis of basic and applied research done at the various re search institutions of the Softwarepark Hagenberg in Austria. Starting with 15 coworkers in my Research Institute for Symbolic Computation (RISC), I initiated the Softwarepark Hagenberg in 1987 on request of the Upper Aus trian Government with the objective of creating a scienti?c, technological, and economic impulse for the region and the international community. In the meantime, in a joint e?ort, the Softwarepark Hagenberg has grown to the current (2009) size of over 1000 R&D employees and 1300 students in six research institutions, 40 companies and 20 academic study programs on the bachelor, master’s and PhD level. The goal of the Softwarepark Hagenberg is innovation of economy in one of the most important current technologies: software. It is the message of this book that this can only be achieved and guaranteed long term by “watering the root”, namely emphasis on research, both basic and applied. In this book, we summarize what has been achieved in terms of research in the various research institutions in the Softwarepark Hagenberg and what research vision we have for the imminent future. When I founded the Softwarepark Hagenberg, in addition to the “watering the root” principle, I had the vision that such a technology park can only prosper if we realize the “magic triangle”, i.e. the close interaction of research, academic education, and business applications at one site, see Figure 1.

This book is devoted to a novel form of genericity in programs, based on parameterizing programs by the structure of the data they manipulate. The book presents the following four revised and extended chapters first given as lectures at the Generic Programming Summer School held at the University of Oxford, UK in August 2002: - Generic Haskell: Practice and Theory - Generic Haskell: Applications - Generic Properties of Datatypes - Basic Category Theory for Models of Syntax

A fairlylarge number of small and medi- sized conferences and workshops take place on an irregular basis, competing for high-quality contributions and for enough attendees to make them ?nancially viable. Discussions aiming at a consolidation have been underway since at least 1992, with concrete planning beginning in summer 1994 and culminating in a public meeting at TAPSOFT’95 in Aarhus. On the basis of a broad consensus, it was decided to establish a single annual federated spring conference in the slot that was then occupied by TAPSOFT and CAAP/ESOP/CC, comprising a number of existing and new conferences and covering a spectrum from theory to practice. ETAPS’98, the ?rst instance of the European Joint Conferences on Theory and Practice of Software, is taking place this year in Lisbon. It comprises ?ve conferences (FoSSaCS, FASE, ESOP, CC, TACAS), four workshops (ACoS, VISUAL, WADT, CMCS), seven invited lectures, and nine tutorials.

Book excerpt: This volume constitutes the proceedings of the second International Workshop on the Semantics, Applications, and Implementation of Program Generation (SAIG 2001)held on 6 September, 2001, in Florence, Italy. SAIG 2001 was held as an ACM SIGPLAN workshop co-located with the International Conference on Principles, Logics, and Implementations of High-level Programming Languages (PLI). As the commercial production of software systems moves toward being a traditional industry, automation will necessarily play a more substantial role in this industry, just as it plays a key role in the production of traditional commodities. SAIG aims at promoting the development and the application of foundational techniques for supporting automatic program generation. A key goal of SAIG is to provide a unique forum for both theoreticians and practitioners to present their results and ideas to an audience from a diverse background. This year we are fortunate to have three in?uential invited speakers: Krzysztof Czarnecki (DaimlerChrysler), Tim Sheard (OGI School of Science and Engineering), and Mitchell Wand (Northeastern University). The proceedings include abstracts of the invited talks, and an invited paper by Tim Sheard. Seven technical papers and two position papers were presented at SAIG 2001.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on recursion and reveals a host of new theoretical arguments, philosophical perspectives, formal representations and empirical evidence from parsing, acquisition and computer models, highlighting its central role in modern science. Noam Chomsky, whose work introduced recursion to linguistics and cognitive science and other leading researchers in the fields of philosophy, semantics, computer science and psycholinguistics in showing the profound reach of this concept into modern science. Recursion has been at the heart of generative grammar from the outset. Recent work in minimalism has put it at center-stage with a wide range of consequences across the intellectual landscape. The contributor to this volume both advance the field and provide a cross-sectional view of the place that recursion takes in modern science.
