The book then considers how children's special needs may be met in terms of curriculum, resources and provisions. It concludes with some prognostications and a critical review of current practice.
Book Synopsis The Triarchic Mind by : Robert J. Sternberg
Download or read book The Triarchic Mind written by Robert J. Sternberg and published by Viking Adult. This book was released on 1988 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychologist Sternberg explains the evolution of theories of intelligence and introduces within this historical context his own theory. His theory invokes components of three kinds: metacomponents--processes involved in planning, monitoring, and evaluating problem-solving activities; performance components--lower-order processes put into play to implement commands of the metacomponents; and knowledge acquisition components--activities instrumental in learning how to solve problems. Sternberg defines intelligence as mental self-management and shows how it is used both in day-to-day problem-solving and in the world of executive decisionmaking, and how it can be nurtured at any age. Sternberg criticizes both traditional notions of intelligence and intelligence tests. ISBN 0-670-80364-2: $19.95.
Book Synopsis The Acquisition of Spanish by : Silvina Montrul
Download or read book The Acquisition of Spanish written by Silvina Montrul and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book on the acquisition of Spanish that provides a state-of-the-art comprehensive overview of Spanish morphosyntactic development in monolingual and bilingual situations. Its content is organized around key grammatical themes that form the empirical base of research in generative grammar: nominal and verbal inflectional morphology, subject and object pronouns, complex structures involving movement (topicalizations, questions, relative clauses), and aspects of verb meaning that have consequences for syntax. The book argues that Universal Grammar constrains all instances of language acquisition and that there is a fundamental continuity between monolingual, bilingual, child and adult early grammatical systems. While stressing their similarities with respect to linguistic representations and processes, the book also considers important differences between these three acquisition situations with respect to the outcome of acquisition. It is also shown that many linguistic properties of Spanish are acquired earlier than in English and other languages. This book is a must read for those interested in the acquisition of Spanish from different theoretical perspectives as well as those working on the acquisition of other languages in different contexts.
Book Synopsis The Competitive Ethos and Democratic Education by : John G. Nicholls
Download or read book The Competitive Ethos and Democratic Education written by John G. Nicholls and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young children and even infants work hard at mastering various kills and show spontaneous pleasure at their own accomplishment. John Nicholls explores the conditions that cause students to lose their unselfconscious involvement in a game or task and become concerned with how they are stacking up against others. Charting the development of children's concepts of luck, effort, and ability, he argues that with age they are increasingly prone to take superiority over others as the definition of success. An emphasis on interpersonal competition, which permeates Western society, exacerbates this egotistical tendency and results in diminished accomplishment and alienation from school. To overcome these problems, Nicholls argues, we must "become as little children" for whom absorption in exploration and accomplishment come naturally, even when those around them are more competent. This ideal is unlikely to be promoted through technical approaches to education, or by the current emphasis on the role of education in economic development. Instead, Nicholls calls for a progressive approach to education. Difficult though it is to implement, this approach is most likely to increase equality of motivation for intellectual development, substantial accomplishment, satisfaction in work, and more productive relations with others. These are important ideas for anyone interested in achievement motivation, for those professionally involved in education, and for nonspecialists interested in, or worried about, how we educate our children.

This book was released on 1998-05-31 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The book brings together some of the most influential thinkers and writers on educational change. It deals with issues like educational innovation, reform, restructuring, culture-building, inspection, school-review, and change management. It asks why some people resist change and what their resistance means. It looks at how men and women, older teachers and younger teachers, experience change differently. It looks at the positive aspects of change but does not hesitate to raise uncomfortable questions about many aspects of educational change either. It looks critically and controversially at the social, economic, cultural and political forces that are driving educational change. School leaders, system administration, teacher leaders, consultants, facilitators, educational researchers, staff developers and change agents of all kinds will find this book an indispensable resource for guiding them to both classic and cutting-edge understandings of educational change, no other work provides as comprehensive coverage of the field of educational change.
