Specifically, the insertion loss based technique is followed in this work. Firstly, it explores the challenges in the printed transmission line design, particularly, microstrip line and coplanar waveguide (CPW). Secondly, with these two transmission line topology as the skeleton, different ultrawideband (UWB) antenna and resonator circuit designs are studied and compared. Thirdly, the reader antennas are designed using a novel methodology proposed in a research paper. In the end, a fully inkjet-printed flexible CPW chipless RFID tag shows promising performance. The chipless RFID tag comes with a CPW transmission line that is coupled to the multiresonator circuit to encode the information in the frequency domain. Two cross-polarized UWB antennas connected to the CPW receive and transmit the signals. As a proof-of-concept, three spiral resonators are used to encode a 3-bit signature, which can be easily expanded to more bits by adding more resonators. It will be shown that by shorting resonators, one has the freedom to encode different frequency signatures. The RFID tag is used for the concentration measurements of different binary liquid mixtures by characterizing the frequency response of the sensor, in both wired and wireless experiments. A capillary tube is placed on one of the resonators to allow the interaction between the sensor and the solutions. Correlations between the concentration and the frequency response are extracted from the change of the insertion loss at the resonant frequency |∆S21|, the half-power 3-dB bandwidth ∆BW, and the shift of the resonant frequency |∆fres|. In addition, the sensor is applied for the concentration measurement of acetic acid vapor, varied from 20 to 120 ppm. However, due to their high cost compared to that of barcodes, the current chipped RFID technology has not yet gained wide acceptance, especially in the field of item-level tagging of cheap items, where trillions of tags are required. Currently, multi-bit passive chipped RFID tags are used for tagging only costly items, where the cost of the tag depends mainly on the used silicon chip. Therefore, previous research has focused on developing chipless and printable RFID tags, which can be used like barcodes. However, a compact and fully-printable chipless RFID tag with sufficient data capacity and orientation insensitivity has not been proposed to date. This motivated this research study.In this work, two different frequency domain based system solutions are proposed in the microwave frequency band as representatives of a new generation of chipless RFID systems, which are capable of dominating the RFID market in the future. The first one is a compact printable orientation insensitive (OI) system, which will overcome the fixed orientation reading limitation of most other chipless RFID tags. In this OI system, the proposed tags consist of a circular conductive patch loaded with multiple 'O' shaped slot ring resonators or a square patch loaded with symmetrically placed 'I' shaped slot resonators in all four sides. The second proposed system is a compact printable dual polarized (DP) system that will overcome the limitation of data capacity by doubling the encoding capacity. The proposed tags consist of conductive patches loaded with vertically and horizontally-polarized 'U' or 'I' shaped slot resonators. Commercially suitable reader antennas are then developed for both the OI and DP systems, where linearly polarized (LP) antennas are developed for reading the OI tags, and dual polarized (DP) antennas are developed for reading the DP tags. Moreover, guidelines are also provided for designing LP and DP antennas with new sets of specifications, which are used next to develop commercially suitable 4x4 and 8x8 LP arrays, and 4x4 DP array antennas in the millimeter (mm) wave frequency band for reading recently developed promising mm-wave tags. Finally, the architecture for a universal DP reader is proposed for reading the novel DP tags using the developed DP antennas, which is also capable of reading all existing LP, OI and cross polarized (CP) tags in the frequency domain. In the final phase of the research, practical implementation steps for the printable chipless RFID technology, such as, paper substrate characterization and tag printing procedure on the paper substrate are studied thoroughly. Thus, the outcomes of the research provide the compact and fully-printable chipless RFID systems, which can be used commercially for identification in item level tagging of the low cost items, as well as for authentication in the printable secure documents.

The unit cost of conventional RFID tags is too high for them to be used in large item level tagging applications. This is because of the expensive electronic integrated circuits (ICs) used in the tags. As a solution to further reduce the cost of RFID tags, chipless RFID tags have been developed. A chipless RFID tag does not require an IC for its operation.Current research on chipless RFID technology has been focused on, the development of tag designs with enhanced data capacity, the development of tags with sensing capabilities, and the development of RFID reader architectures and signal processing algorithms. Despite current research efforts, further work is required in the area of signal processing for chipless RFID. For this purpose, three novel signal processing methods are introduced in this thesis, (i) development of a robust multidimensional detection algorithm for detecting data bits encoded in a chipless RFID tag, (ii) time and frequency domain analysis of backscattered tag signals for the removal of interference, and (iii) a new systematic calibration procedure for single antenna RFID readers. These methods enhance the performance of chipless RFID systems in terms of the data bit detection and reading range. Existing algorithms used for detecting data bits encoded in a frequency signature of a chipless RFID tag use a one dimensional approach to detection. The one dimensional approach to detection does not consider all the characteristics of the spectral features that encode data bits in a frequency signature. Therefore, the detection performance achieved is suboptimal. In order to enhance the detection performance, a new multidimensional detection method is introduced. The new method utilizes a set of orthonormal basis functions to fully describe the characteristics of a frequency signature. Using these orthonormal basis functions a frequency signature is represented as a signal point in a multidimensional signal space. The detection of data bits contained in an unknown frequency signature is performed using minimum distance detection. It is shown that the performance achieved by the new method exceeds the performance of existing one dimensionalthreshold based detection of tag data bits.The second method proposed in the thesis focuses on improving the reading range of an RFID reader beyond proximity based reading. For this purpose, the total received signal at an RFID reader is analysed in the time domain as well as the frequency domain to identify the essential signal component that contains the tag data. It is shown that the useful data is contained in the antenna mode of the backscattered tag response. The antenna mode backscatter is separated from therest of the received signal using a time window. The separated antenna mode is then analysed in the frequency domain to estimate the tag's frequency signature. Through this time and frequency domain analysis, non-proximity based reading is achieved. It is shown that the tag can be read in non-proximity reading conditions using simulation results and measurements taken in an anechoic chamber environment.The final method introduced in the thesis is a systematic calibration procedure for single antenna based chipless RFID readers. The calibration procedure takes into account practical conditions prevailing in a real world application environment. The calibration allows the RFID reader to accurately estimate the frequency signature of a chipless RFID tag in a cluttered environment. It also addresses the limitations of existing calibration methods used for chipless RFID systems such as the need for repeated calibration and antenna alignment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a wireless technology used to automatically identify objects attached to its tags. Its applications span in different areas such as inventory control, logistics, security and item tracking. Vast majority of commercially available RFID tags use Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) to encode and transmit data. This micro-chip in the RFID tag makes the tag manufacturing process complicated and expensive compared to optical barcode printing. Researchers have brought the idea of removing the micro-chip and using chipless techniques to encode data into tags, allowing them to be passive, printable and low cost. However, chipless RFID technologies have still not been able to replace relatively expensive chipped RFID tags mainly due to less tag bit capacity. Over the last decade, researchers have mainly focused on improving the chipless RFID tag design and the RFID reader architecture. However, they were mostly using primitive signal processing techniques such as moving average or threshold based detection. The few advanced signal processing techniques reported so far have high computation complexity, hence not feasible for commercial implementation.This thesis presents smart tag detection techniques that are computationally feasible and allowing high tag data encoding capacity. Firstly, four different maximum likelihood (ML) based tag detection techniques have been developed based on the reader architecture and channel knowledge. In addition, all of them are able to operate based on both the time and frequency domain data samples of any frequency domain tag. One of the detection techniques jointly detects the channel as well as the tag type without having any prior channel knowledge or a calibration tag. A fifth tag detection technique was developed for an existing frequency domain tag reader using the magnitude of the tag response. However, these single input single output (SISO) based tag detection techniques suffer from high computation complexity. Two new detection methods have been developed using the likelihood expressions derived in above techniques to reduce the computation complexity from exponential to linear order. The first method was a suboptimal bit by bit detection technique (serial reading) and the second method is a fully optimal Trellis tree based Viterbi decoding technique. Then a novel, multiple input multiple output (MIMO) based chipless RFID system was introduced and a tag detection technique for the proposed system was developed. Finally a MIMO chipless tag was designed which includes a broadband equal power divider, monopole antennas and spiral resonators.It was found that, the proposed tag detection techniques for SISO systems provides significantly higher tag reading accuracy over the existing threshold based detector. In addition, they are capable of operating without a guard-band which makes the tag data bit capacity to be doubled without compromising the reading accuracy. Moreover, the effective SNR gain provided by the proposed techniques can be represented as increasing the tag reading range. All these benefits were achieved without compromising the low computation complexity. The MIMO tag with 2 branches is capable of encoding up to 4 times the total bits stored in existing SISO tags.These smart tag detection techniques are expected to increase the data bit capacity in chipless RFID tags hence produce commercialized chipless RFID systems in future.

RFID is an automated identification system that uses radio frequency waves to transmit data between a tag and a reader. Penetration of RFID in low cost item level tagging is hindered due to the high price of tags. The high cost of chipped tags stalled many ambitious projects such as low cost and perishable item level tagging for retails, supply chain management, logistics, pharmaceuticals and luggage handling to just name a few. The tag can be made low cost removing the microchip in the tag. The aim is to make the chipless tag that costs sub cents and is compatible with the current Electronic Product Code (EPC) Global standard. A few research groups have been working in the domain of chipless RFID tags. The big challenge of chipless RFID tag development is to incorporate 64 data bits in a half the credit card size real estate. Recently reported chipless RFID tags can meet neither the bit nor the real estate requirement.The thesis has presented numerous microwave passive designs to develop compact chipless tags with high data capacity. The goal is to develop fully printable uniplanar chipless RFID tags that offer: (i) high spectral efficiency meaning maximum number of data bits possible in the ultra-wide band (UWB) frequency range from 3.1-10.6 GHz, (ii) high spatial efficiency meaning very compact design of multiple data encoding elements in prescribed surface area of the tag, and (iii) operational flexibility such as orientation insensitive tag design. To fulfil the thesis goal a set of high data capacity, spectrally efficient and compact chipless tags are designed. The designed chipless tags are: (i) polarization diversity (PD) based re-transmission type tag; (ii) dual-band modified complementary split ring resonator (MCSRR) based tag; (iii) single polarized radar cross section (RCS) based tag, (iv) dual polarized RCS based tag, (v) multi-dimensional data encoding (MDDE) based tag and (vi) polarization insensitive (PI) tag. To realize the aforementioned chipless tags, a number of compact resonant structures with different polarization attributes, such as single polarized, dual polarized and polarization insensitive, have been proposed. A chipless RFID tag reader is also developed to read the designed tags in a laboratory setting. Successful reading of the designed tags using the developed reader has been accomplished for both mono-static and bi-static tag reading arrangements. The developed chipless RFID system finds potential applications in authentications of Australian polymer banknote and secured documents, tagging of goods and consumables products, bus tickets, stamps, and pharmaceuticals.

As barcodes and other means of identification and asset tracking are inadequate for recent demands, RFID technology has attracted interest for applications such as logistics, supply chain management, asset tracking, and security access control. However, the cost of RFID limits their potential for the replacement of trillions of barcodes each year. The only possible solution is a fully printable chipless RFID tag.A novel RFID system comprised of a chipless RFID tag and an associated reader is reported in the thesis. The chipless tag is a fully-passive microwave circuit and uses spectral signatures for data encoding. The tag consists of a multi-resonator coupled to transmitting and receiving antennas. To accommodate multiple bits, the tag operates over the ultra wideband (UWB) frequency spectrum. UWB antennas are used to receive the interrogation signal sent from the reader and transmit the signal back to the reader after performing modulation of the frequency spectra with the multi-resonator. Modulation is performed in both amplitude and phase of the spectrum. A chipless tag up to 35 bits which operate over 3-7 GHz band has been designed.After the successful design of the chipless tag, three prototype readers have been developed. The Gen1 reader was designed to validate the chipless RFID concept using 6-bit chipless tag reading based on amplitude-only detection in S-band; the Gen2 reader is an upgraded version of Gen1 with both amplitude and phase detection capability; and the third generation reader is a UWB reader capable of reading up to 35-bits in the UWB band. The integrated reader is a complete system with analog RF and digital control sections loaded with graphical user interface (GUI) and software protocol. Both the hardware and software design of the RFID reader and field trials of the designed chipless RFID system have been validated in the real world environment. An investigation into antenna systems in order to enhance reading range up to 70 cm has also been performed.The unique features of the developed chipless RFID system are: (i) a low cost, fully printable tag and (ii) secure, remote and non-line-of-sight operability. The importance of this concept lies in the fact that chipless RFID tags become comparable to barcodes in terms of the substrate material used and the cost of fabrication. The main application of this chipless RFID system is in short-range tagging of extremely low cost items such as the Australian polymer banknote.
