Book excerpt: This report focuses on the development of a new method of analysis of laterally loaded piles embedded in a multi-layered soil deposit treated as a three-dimensional continuum. Assuming that soil behaves as a linear elastic material, the governing differential equations for the deflection of laterally loaded piles were obtained using energy principles and calculus of variations. The differential equations were solved using both the method of initial parameters and numerical techniques. Soil resistance, pile deflection, slope of the deflected pile, bending moment and shear force can be easily obtained at any depth along the entire pile length. The results of the analysis were in very good agreement with three-dimensional finite element analysis results. The analysis was further extended to account for soil nonlinearity. A few simple constitutive relationships that allow for modulus degradation with increasing strain were incorporated into the analysis. The interaction of piles in groups was also studied.

Book excerpt: This report presents the results of the Treasure Island Liquefaction Test (TILT), a joint project carried out by the University of California, San Diego, and Brigham Young University. To improve our understanding of the lateral load behavior of deep foundations in liquefied soil, a series of full-scale lateral load tests were performed at the National Geotechnical Experimentation Site (NGES) at Treasure Island in San Francisco, California. The ultimate goal of the TILT project was to develop lateral load-displacement relationships for a variety of individual piles and pile groups in liquefied sand under full-scale conditions. The tests were carried out using a high-speed hydraulic loading system after the sand surrounding the piles was liquefied using blasting techniques. This report presents backcalculated p-y curves for single pipe piles, pile groups, and cast-in-steel shell piles before and during liquefaction, as well as through dissipation of excess pore water pressures. In addition, recommendations with regard to design of deep foundations in liquefied soil are presented.

Book excerpt: Deep foundation elements are typically used to transfer structural loads for multi-story buildings and large-span bridges to a competent soil layer when 1) the soil close to the ground surface has no sufficient bearing capacity, and when 2) liquefiable soils are encountered. The majority of the bridges constructed within seismic zones rely upon the stability of earthen embankments and deep foundation that are installed above or within liquefiable soil deposits. Despite large factor of safety values or different load and resistance factors being used to adequately design deep foundations within seismic areas, soil liquefaction may cause extensive damage to the structure by 1) reducing the axial geotechnical resistances, 2) reducing the lateral load capacity, 3) adding additional loads to the foundation (dragload), 4) inducing excessive foundation settlements (downdrag), and 5) causing lateral spreading on the soil surrounding the foundation. The compressive movement of the soil caused by liquefaction affects the distribution of the load along a deep foundation. Dragloads are developed when the amount of the soil settlement is larger than the amount of foundation settlement. According to Muhunthan et al. (2017), the developed dragload may exceed the structural axial strength of the deep foundation in the extreme events. This additional load can significantly impact the axial behavior of a deep foundation. In addition, the liquefaction-induced settlements may affect serviceability of the structure by causing downdrag on the installed deep foundation element. Many of the existing design methods to address dragload and downdrag are based on the consolidation phenomenon. Therefore, there is an immediate need for research to evaluate the impact of liquefaction-induced dragload and dragload on the performance of deep foundation elements constructed in earthquake prone areas. Full-scale axial load tests and full-scale blast-induced liquefaction tests were performed around three drilled shaft foundations and three driven pile foundations to 1) evaluate the existing design methods, and 2) investigate the effects of liquefaction-induced dragload and downdrag on deep foundations. The tested foundations were constructed at the Turrell Arkansas Test Site (TATS), located within the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ), and Mississippi Embayment.

Book excerpt: Offshore wind farms have the ability to meet the energy demands of the USA four times over, and are located offshore where less turbulent, high-speed winds can generate electricity efficiently. The most popular option for offshore foundations are monopiles, which are characterized as large diameter steel pipe pile suited for relatively shallow depth (20 – 30m) so they have a large aspect ratio (length divided by diameter or L/D) of between 3 and 8. The most common design methods for laterally loaded monopiles rely on p-y curves, which were developed for relatively small-diameter and slender piles and might not be suited to predict the behavior of larger diameter and smaller L/D ratios. In order to evaluate the suitability of p-y curves to predict the load – displacement behavior of laterally loaded monopiles a consistent laboratory testing methodology to perform 1-g lateral load tests in sand was developed. The aim of this research is to compare the results from the 1- g lateral load tests to compared to the predictions of a newly developed 3D Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis as well predictions from the American Petroleum Institute (API), which utilizes the p-y method. A repeatable and consistent methodology to conduct a large number of 1-g lateral load tests in sand using spheres to model the state of stresses around a monopile for varying sphere diameters and embedment depths was developed. The sand was characterized by its dynamic properties, which were used as input parameters for the 3D FEM analysis. A total of 50 1-g model tests were conducted and analyzed. The results indicate that the 3D FEM is able the non-linearity in initial stiffness if accurate dynamic properties are used. Additionally, p-y were not able to capture the initial non-linearity in the load – displacement behavior and underestimated the initial stiffness for all tests.
