Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays focuses on Canadian history and its legacies as represented in novels and films in English and French, produced in Canada mainly in the 1980s and 1990s. The approach is both cross-cultural and interdisciplinary, aiming at articulating Canadian differences through a comparison of anglophone and francophone cultures, illustrated by works treating some of the different groups which make up Canadian society - English-Canadian, Québecois, Acadian, Native, and ethnic minorities. The emphasis is on the problematic representation of Canadianness, which is closely bound up with constructions of history and its legacies - dispossession, criminality, nomadism, Gothicism, the Maritime. The English/French language difference is emblematic of Canadian difference; the two-part arrangement, with one section on Literature and the other on Film, sets up the pattern of relationships between the two forms of cultural representation that these essays explore. Essays in the Literature section are on single texts by such writers as: Margaret Atwood, Tomson Highway, Ann-Marie MacDonald, Anne Michaels, and Alice Munro; Gabrielle Roy, Anne Hébert, Antonine Maillet, Bernard Assiniwi, and Régine Robin. The Film section with its mirror structure both supplements and amplifies this dialogue, extending notions of Canadianness with its emphasis on voices from Quebec and Acadia traditionally 'othered' in Canadian history. Filmmakers treated include: Phillip Borsos, Atom Egoyan, Ted Kotcheff, Mort Ransen, and Vincent Ward; Denys Arcand, Gilles Carle, Alanis Obomsawin, Léa Pool, and Jacques Savoie.

Book Synopsis The Romance of a Station by : Rosa Praed
Download or read book The Romance of a Station written by Rosa Praed and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The romance of the station" is set in Australia and tells the story of Mrs. Ansdell and her husband, Alec. Excerpt: The undulating outlines of our Island gave promise of picturesque scenery. It was all interesting and romantic. Something was fascinating in the thought that only at the full or new moon when the tide was lowest, could man or beast swim across the Narrows to the mainland. I liked the idea of being separated from the world by that long, lonely, man-grove-fringed strait which, no broader than a river at its neck, widened out some twenty miles lower into the beautiful Gundabine harbour that had filled me with admiration as we had entered it in the coasting steamer. In calm weather the bay was blue and smiling; but when a south-east gale blew, and the waves dashed on the little islets that stood like a row of sentinels between the great island and the mainland, and the sea horses chased each other, it was no pleasant passage to make on a night in Rame's skiff or the Island boat. But I did not let myself foresee possible storms and terrors, and I would not dwell upon practical difficulties and inconveniences such as the carriage of household goods and stores, and having to send to Gundabine for our mail. Neither Alec nor I had realized these as yet.

They reunite at a salon, where they help to bring a long-neglected play back to life. Socialist mystic Maddox Challis and Countess Adrian are also captivated by Beatrice. The Countess's fascination with Beatrice is somehow linked to a theory that a stronger spirit may possess a weaker one. Countess Adrian sets her sights on Bernard, she harnesses her knowledge of the occult to attempt to take Beatrice's place and avoid her own predicted death. However, Beatrice wants to be left alone to study acting, but she is torn between two powerful personalities that are attracted to her seeming fragility for different reasons; while Bernard is caught between her and Adrian.

Download or read book Catastrophe and Meaning written by Moishe Postone and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2003-11-15 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How should we understand the relation of the Holocaust to the broader historical processes of the century just ended? How do we explain the bearing of the Holocaust on problems of representation, memory, memorialization, and historical practice? These are some of the questions explored by an esteemed group of scholars in Catastrophe and Meaning, the most significant multiauthored book on the Holocaust in over a decade. This collection features essays that consider the role of anti-Semitism in the recounting of the Holocaust; the place of the catastrophe in the narrative of twentieth-century history; the questions of agency and victimhood that the Holocaust inspires; the afterlife of trauma in literature written about the tragedy; and the gaps in remembrance and comprehension that normal historical works fail to notice.
