Book Synopsis Smart Highways by : United States. General Accounting Office
Download or read book Smart Highways written by United States. General Accounting Office and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The General Accounting Office (GAO) examined the development and application of intelligent vehicle and highway systems (IVHS), more commonly known as smart highways, as a means of reducing traffic congestion. The following questions were addressed: What have the major studies concluded about the potential effects of IVHS, and to what extent are these findings empirically based? What additional information can be learned from IVHS field tests under way? What major obstacles could impede the realization of transportation benefits possible through IVHS technologies? In brief, GAO found that the empirical basis for judging the effects of IVHS is limited but nonetheless positive and promising.
Book Synopsis Assessing the Benefits and Costs of ITS by : David Gillen
Download or read book Assessing the Benefits and Costs of ITS written by David Gillen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 17 chapters in this book, which evolved from a conference on measuring the contributions of ITS sponsored by the California Department of Transportation in February 2002, examine the costs and benefits of ITS in an economic and business policy context. Section 1 examines the broad theme of how and what ITS contributes to the economy and how one makes a business case for ITS. Section 2 includes three chapters on ITS applications in mass transit. Section 3 explores ITS applications in the automobile/highway system. Section 4 considers integrative issues including how ITS is perceived and how it can be positioned to improve surface transportation. This volume will be especially useful to researchers and policy makers working in transportation, transportation engineering, and the economic analysis of transportation systems.

Book Synopsis Fuel Consumption Estimation and Optimal Traffic Signal Timing by : Tsai-Yun Liao
Download or read book Fuel Consumption Estimation and Optimal Traffic Signal Timing written by Tsai-Yun Liao and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this report are to develop an analytical model to estimate fuel consumption and to investigate the effects of signal timing on fuel consumption. Several numerical experiments, including a variety of geometric configurations, traffic conditions, and signal timing are conducted to test the AFCM estimation capability and to investigate the effects of signal timing on fuel consumption. The results from these experiments indicate that total fuel consumption, with respect to signal cycle time, possesses a convex pattern. In order to analytically establish the relationship between fuel consumption and signal timing, a three-term form is reduced from the AFCM to represent major effects of vehicle characteristics, traffic behavior, and fuel consumption parameters on optimal cycle length. The first term represents vehicle ideal fuel consumption, the second term describes vehicle fuel consumption during acceleration after a stop, and the third term accounts for stochastic effects. Numerical analysis and comparisons show that the optimal cycle lengths from the expression are rather close to those from the AFCM.
