Book Synopsis Southern California Funny Cars by : Steve Reyes
Download or read book Southern California Funny Cars written by Steve Reyes and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2023-06-19 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern California was the birthplace of organized drag racing, with the first organized race held at the Santa Ana airport in 1949 and the subsequent founding of the National Hot Rod Association in 1950. Over the next decade and a half, the dragster became the king of the quarter mile on Southern California drag strips. In 1964, veteran dragster owner/driver Jack Chrisman had an idea for something different to grace Southern California's drag strips. It was not a dragster but a stock-bodied race car using nitromethane for fuel in a supercharged engine. With the help of Gene Mooneyham, Mercury's Fran Hernandez, and sponsor Helen Sachs, Chrisman put together the world's first nitro-burning "funny car." It was a steel stock-bodied Mercury Cyclone with a supercharged 427 Ford engine running on pure nitromethane. Chrisman started the evolution that soon turned stock steel-bodied cars into fiberglass-bodied tube chassis funny cars. Southern California drag racers began to lead the way for racers all over the United States in the new funny car class.
Download or read book Rough Air written by Kevin Donovan and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-09-10 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuing the story of Alta Airlines, the corporation first introduced to readers in the novel AIRLINE, Rough Air opens with the macabre murder of a well respected chief executive in his office on a summer day in 2005. Maynard Brennan, the first CEO in the colorful history of Alta to come from outside the ranks, is a catalyst for dramatic change within the corporation. He cleans house, removing Altas incumbent executives, unaware that he is sowing the seeds of his own demise. Through the eyes of Caroline Woodson - a long-time flight attendant and Alta veteran - we follow Maynards progression to the top and the circumstances that lead to his murder, including the jockeying of his newly appointed leadership team: Rex Wright, a flamboyant and charismatic personality with a long airline pedigree; Bernice Anthony, a financial genius who is determined to become the first woman CEO of a major airline; and Trey Sperling, a young consulting wizard whose idea for an airline within an airline is given the green light to save the stodgy operation from further financial bleeding. At the moment of Maynards death, the story takes a leap backward, to the life of the founder, Marty Willman, and his shepherding of the airline through the turmoil of the jet age, the civil rights era in the south and Altas bold growth into a global airline. Marty maintains Altas humble family culture through the end of his reign, but it is a stark contrast to the present-day enterprise - one in which pay cuts and layoffs bankroll the bonuses of Altas elite executives. The story resumes with the investigation of the murder. Caroline, who has risen to a high-ranking position, is front and center as Altas ambitious leaders reveal themselves and the murderer among them at the climactic finale of the story.
Book Synopsis How to Build Max-Performance Buick Engines by : Jefferson Bryant
Download or read book How to Build Max-Performance Buick Engines written by Jefferson Bryant and published by CarTech Inc. This book was released on 2008-06 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The photos in this edition are black and white. Skylarks, GSXs, Grand Nationals, Rivieras, Gran Sports; the list of formidable performance Buicks is impressive. From the torque monsters of the 1960s to the high-flying Turbo models of the '80s, Buicks have a unique place in performance history. During the 1960s, when word of the mountains of torque supplied by the big-inch Buicks hit the street, nobody wanted to mess with them. Later, big-inch Buicks and the Hemi Chryslers went at it hammer and tongs in stock drag shootouts and in the pages of the popular musclecar magazines of the day. The wars between the Turbo Buicks and Mustang GTs in the 1980s were also legendary, as both cars responded so well to modifications. How to Build Max-Performance Buick Engines is the first performance engine book ever published on the Buick family of engines. This book covers everything from the Nailheads of the '50s and early '60s, to the later evolutions of the Buick V-8 through the '60s and '70s, through to the turbo V-6 models of the '70s and '80s. Veteran magazine writer and Buick owner Jefferson Bryant supplies the most up-to-date information on heads, blocks, cams, rotating assemblies, interchangeability, and oiling-system improvements and modifications, along with details on the best performance options available, avenues for aftermarket support, and so much more. Finally, the Buick camp gets the information they have been waiting for, and it's all right here in How to Build Max-Performance Buick Engines.

Book Synopsis Altered Visions by : L. J. Rennenkampf
Download or read book Altered Visions written by L. J. Rennenkampf and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-09-21 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America has been a fortunate land, as Will Rogers noted. If we needed to build a house, there was all the wood at hand; if we wanted coal or iron, there was aplenty for the scratching, or if we sought oil, all we had to do was stick a pipe in the ground. But, as he said, we would find out how smart we were when all that came to an end. And that is what is happening. Nothing lasts forever except change, and denial that the future will be different is simply dysfunctional. There is Global Warming, pollution, and running out of resources, which will come to control us painfully if we will not face up to them. Altered Visions are not an option.
Book Synopsis Twentieth-Century Humanist Critics by : William Calin
Download or read book Twentieth-Century Humanist Critics written by William Calin and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Twentieth-Century Humanist Critics revisits the work and place of eight scholars roughly contemporary with Anglo-American New Criticism: Leo Spitzer, Ernst Robert Curtius, Erich Auerbach, Albert Béguin, Jean Rousset, C.S. Lewis, F.O. Matthiessen, and Northrop Frye. William Calin first considers the achievements of each critic, examining his methodology and basic presuppositions as well as the critiques marshalled against him. Calin explores their relation to history, to canon-formation, and to our current theoretical debates. He then goes on to show how all eight form a current in the history of criticism related to both humanism and modernism. Underscoring the international, cosmopolitian aspects of literary scholarship in the twentieth century, The Twentieth-Century Humanist Critics brings together humanist critical traditions from Europe, the United Kingdom, and North America and reveals the surprising extent to which, in various languages and academic systems, critics were posing similar questions and offering a gamut of similar responses.
