Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book deals with the Functional sentence perspective of English existential sentences. In the theoretical part of the paper, the reader is acquainted with essential information concerning syntactic, semantic and functional description of English existential sentences. Chapter 3 offers information about syntactic structure of existential there-constructions and its relationship with regular SVO sentence structure. In the following chapter, semantic variation among existential sentences is discussed. In Chapter, Firbasian theory of FSP is introduced, focusing especially on communicative dynamism and degrees of communicative dynamism distributed by different sentence elements. Dynamic semantic functions, dynamic semantic scales, and factors influencing the distribution of FSP are introduced as well. The analytical part is based on analysis of a corpus of 250 English existential sentences that were subjected to a functional description. Sentences are grouped in accord with what dynamic semantic scale they represent. Three groups of scales are descriptively analysed. Afterwards, conclusions defining general patterns and tendencies of the FSP of English existential sentence are drawn.

Book Synopsis Syntactic and FSP Aspects of the Existential Construction in Norwegian by : Dubec, Pavel
Download or read book Syntactic and FSP Aspects of the Existential Construction in Norwegian written by Dubec, Pavel and published by Charles University in Prague, Karolinum Press. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book discusses the information structure approach as introduced by the Prague linguistic circle and elaborated, in the first place, by Jan Firbas, one of the key persons in the field of functional sentence perspective (FSP), and further by Aleš Svoboda, Libuše Dušková or Martin Adam. It explores the Norwegian existential construction from the syntactic and FSP points of view but also discusses selected FSP aspects in general. The theory of functional sentence perspective has been attested to multiple languages such as Czech, English, German, Russian, French, Italian or Spanish. This book attempts, among other things, to attest its applicability to Norwegian, and thus demonstrate its universal nature, at least in the field of Indo-European languages.

Book Synopsis From Syntax to Text: The Janus Face of Functional Sentence Perspective by : Libuše Dušková
Download or read book From Syntax to Text: The Janus Face of Functional Sentence Perspective written by Libuše Dušková and published by Charles University in Prague, Karolinum Press. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume presents the author’s articles written in the last fifteen years, dealing with the interaction between syntax, functional sentence perspective (information structure) and text in present-day English. It is divided into five parts, I Syntactic Constancy, II Syntax FSP Interface, III FSP and Semantics, IV Syntax, FSP, Text and V Style, which reveal the two facets of functional sentence perspective: syntactic structures as realization forms of the carriers of FSP functions, and the connection of FSP with the level of text. The first and the last two parts frame the content of the volume in treating the role of functional sentence perspective at the syntactic and the textual levels. At the former, FSP is investigated as a potential factor of syntactic divergence between English and Czech, at the latter the role of FSP is examined with respect to theme development, text build-up and style. The points discussed in the other parts concern, among others, the hierarchical relationship between syntax and FSP, the question of potentiality in FSP structure, different realization forms of FSP structure and FSP functions, general and specific questions of word order, with major attention paid to the role of semantics.

Book Synopsis Inversion in Modern English by : Heidrun Dorgeloh
Download or read book Inversion in Modern English written by Heidrun Dorgeloh and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book offers a comprehensive study of the different forms of subject-verb and subject-auxiliary-inversion in Modern English declarative sentences. It treats inversion as a speaker-based decision for reordering within a fairly rigid word order system and identifies the meaning of the construction in terms of point of view and speaker subjectivity. This semantic claim is tested against the occurrence, as well as the absence, of the different forms of inversion in natural discourse. The analysis of the pragmatics and discourse function of inversion is based on the LOB and the Brown corpus and takes into account various textual relations: British and American English, written mode, style, text type, genre. The results suggest a strong affinity with the greater or lesser subjectivity of a text: the construction is a marker of interpersonal meaning. Provided the context is one of relative unexpectedness, it additionally becomes a discourse marker, which points to the limited value of quantitative corpus data in functional syntax.

The main aspects of use will be illustrated with examples from three novels written by the South African writer Alan Paton. The book is divided into three main chapters: the first one is a general introduction which explains some general concepts related to word order, to the corpus of examples and to Alan Paton, the author of the novels chosen as a corpus of examples; the second chapter is devoted to the syntactic processes of thematization in English and the third one to the syntactic processes of postponement.
Book Synopsis Functional Sentence Perspective in Written and Spoken Communication by : Jan Firbas
Download or read book Functional Sentence Perspective in Written and Spoken Communication written by Jan Firbas and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-06-25 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by the ideas of the Prague School, the theory of functional sentence perspective (FSP) is concerned with the distribution of information as determined by all meaningful elements, from intonation (for speech) to context. A central feature of FSP is communicative dynamism. Jan Firbas discusses the distribution of the degrees of communicative dynamism over sentence elements, which determines the orientation or perspective of the sentence. He examines also the relation of theme and rheme to, and implementation by, syntactic components. Special attention is paid to the relation between FSP and word order. The second part of the book deals with spoken communication and considers the place of intonation in the interplay of FSP factors, establishing the concept of prosodic prominence. It tackles the relationship between the distribution of degrees of communicative dynamism as determined by the interplay of the non-prosodic FSP factors and the distribution of degrees of prosodic prominence as brought about by intonation.

Book Synopsis Cross-linguistic Correspondences by : Thomas Egan
Download or read book Cross-linguistic Correspondences written by Thomas Egan and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrastive Linguistics is an expanding field, as witnessed by the publication in recent years of an increasing number of monographs, collected volumes and journal articles. The present volume, which comprises an introduction and ten chapters dealing with lexical contrasts between English and other languages, shows advances within the well-established lexical work in the field. Each of the chapters takes lexical items as its starting point and compares English with one or more languages. The languages represented are Spanish, Lithuanian, Swedish, German, Norwegian and Czech. Furthermore, they emphasise the link between lexis and grammar, not only within the same language, but also across languages. Finally, several studies represent one of the more recent developments of contrastive linguistics, namely a growing focus on genre and register comparisons. The book should appeal to both established scholars and advanced students with an interest in lexis, genre, corpus linguistics and/or contrastive linguistics.
