Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emulating the format of Raising a Modern-Day Princess, authors Doreen Hanna and Karen Whiting seek to help parents and grandparents cultivate strong relationships and encourage the spiritual formation in their daughters using examples, Bible teaching on the fruit of the Spirit, and a variety of creative activities that are based on Galatians 5:22-23, the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control). By implementing the ideas in this book, mothers (as well as fathers) will be equipped to understand and guide their daughters through each step of becoming His “princess.” This will include perceiving a daughter’s unique personality and gifts, refining her character through training and discipline, and modeling the attributes of a daughter of the King. This book is a follow-up to both Raising a Modern-Day Knight (by Robert Lewis) and Raising a Modern-Day Princess by Pam Farrel and Doreen Hanna. While the latter book is aimed at parents of girls ages 12 and up, this book focuses on building the Christian character of younger girls.

Book excerpt: A fun family devotional inspiring children to understand the fruit of the Spirit It's common for kids to memorize the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, goodness, self-control, and all the rest. But that doesn't mean they understand what it means. Is peace just not fighting with your siblings? Does self-control mean resisting a second dessert? When Mom and Dad explain these concepts just in terms of morality, we miss the mark. Christie Thomas is skilled at taking complex ideas and making them accessible to kids . . . and adults learn a lot along the way too. Each of her devotions is designed to help parents connect their children with the Holy Spirit through a Scripture passage, thought-provoking questions, ways to apply each verse, and a prayer. And for each fruit, parents can use the optional hands-on activities when there's extra time. Perfect for kicking off the New Year as a family, these 100 devotional experiences include illustrated examples of each fruit of the Spirit. They demonstrate the hands, heart, and habits of Jesus and also teach children to spend time with the good God who loves them. By understanding how he covers them with his goodness and how his Spirit helps them grow their own beautiful, Jesus-reflecting character, the whole family will connect to the Vine and grow abundant fruit together.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone familiar with the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd has probably encountered the early description of this approach to the religious formation of the child in The Good Shepherd and the Child: A Joyful Journey. With major contributions by Sofia Cavalletti, Gianna Gobbi, Silvana Montanaro, and Patricia Coulter, this book has long been a “core text’ for catechists and also for parents of children in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. Now there is a new edition, which reflects the changes in the presentations and the materials that Sofia Cavalletti made in the years before her death in August 2011. The original contributions of the authors are retained in Part I. In Part II, long time catechist and one of the first US catechists to study with Sofia Cavalletti, Rebekah Rojcewicz, has carefully outlined the current methods and developments in the work. This includes a selection of the key parables and scripture texts that are presented to the children. She also offers a new Introduction in which she describes the process by which the original authors and founders of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd came to recognize the child’s potential for a relationship with God and learned what nurtures that experience. The original art work by Julie Coulter-English is retained in this new edition.

Book excerpt: So many of us have asked the question: What is my purpose? Or my why. I grew up in Iowa, made a stop of fourteen years in Salt Lake City, Utah, and then transplanted to Dallas upon meeting my husband, Kevin Thompson. He lived in Texas and I in Utah, so after dating just over a year, we decided the over one thousand four hundred miles apart could only go on so long. Growing up in an average American family with functional dysfunction, graduated from Drake University, lived in three different states, experienced a divorce after fourteen years, and now remarried nine years, I've come face-to-face with ample discipline. And after moving eight times in the same nine years, you don't just clean your house, you clear your mind. This story of why and how the art of living a minimalistic lifestyle will do more than create harmony in your home. It's shifted us from investing in our flesh to an ongoing investment in the Spirit. We also wish to be understood like the millennials you may not agree with all our choices, home decor, or facets of life we've carved out like artwork, literally. I'd like to say it's been a quick, simple shift, but we've had to make some eye-opening and major decisions in our behaviors. Not because of lack but for the greater cause as our goals, dreams, and desires have shifted. In order to move forward, you must look for a moment to learn from life's challenges and be disciplined. Discipline brings about wisdom because we learn something through every challenge no matter its size. Not only did our goals shift, but the mind-set for why we were creating these goals has changed. So when asked what does being a minimalist mean, just remember one word: humble. I pray and hope through my testimonies I'll share from my journey, you'll humble your heart, create your own goals, and integrate those pieces of minimalism that speak to you throughout this book. Most importantly, remember to move not just the stuff from your life but make it a lifetime journey to be more with less. Abscission will tell our story of the paradigm shift we made toward living an intentionally simple life and finding where needing less left us wanting more: more time, more appreciation, more quality, more freedom, more meaning, more purpose, more creating, more hope, more health, more wisdom, more discipline, and more life to be lived fully. Like a tree has its seasons shedding old leaves and bearing new fruit, abscission is the full circle definition of how minimalism takes place in your life once you fully understand what it has to offer.
