New categories of Shakespearean vocatives are developed and the grammar of vocatives is investigated in, above, and below the clause, following morpho-syntactic, semantic, lexicographical, pragmatic, social and contextual criteria. Going beyond the conventional paradigm of power and solidarity and with recourse to Shakespearean drama as both text and performance, the study sees vocatives as foregrounded experiential, interpersonal and textual markers. Shakespeare’s vocatives construe, both quantitatively and qualitatively, habitus and identity. They illustrate relationships or messages. It presented a vast treasure of lexicographical material, with renderings into both German and English. Its publication superseded at once all other existing dictionaries, mostly stemming from the 19th century. The Dictionary offered for the first time a strictly alphabetical order of entries, rather than a simple arrangement by roots. This feature not only saved the scholar much time and work, it also set the standard for future lexicographical work on the Old Testament. In 1958 a new, expanded edition was published which included an extensive supplement. Many reprints have followed since, all following the original presentation of a dictionary and supplement in two separate volumes. To this very day the Dictionary remains the only complete and comprehensive English-German dictionary of the Old Testament. Ich möchte, dass mein Buch allen Menschen hilft, die auf der Suche nach Antworten sind, ob es tatsächlich nötig und sinnvoll ist, den im Ausland lebenden Kindern die Muttersprache der Eltern beizubringen. Meine Überzeugung ist: Ja, auf jeden Fall, obwohl es nicht immer einfach ist. Abgesehen von dem Willen und der Überzeugung der Eltern ist auch die Einstellung der Kinder zur Zweisprachigkeit von großer Bedeutung. Nicht immer wollen sie ihre erste oder zweite Sprache pflegen oder weiter fördern. Die Umwelt zwingt ihnen eine andere Art der Kommunikation auf.
