Book excerpt: Slovakia is a convergent zone of three interrelated spheres of study in Roman Archaeology: the frontier, Romanization, and cultural identity. New research has redefined the frontier as a zone of interaction where people came together in a complex pattern of behavior and has shown Romanization to be an outmoded concept, with the indigenous people now seen as having an active voice. In connection to the redefining of the frontier and rejection of Romanization, it has become evident that identity played an important role for people at the frontier. Archaeological material from the Roman Period in Slovakia provides an opportunity to study identity as it manifested itself among the Germanic Quadi. The objective of this dissertation is to investigate how identity functioned for the Germans, and to see what effect, if any, outside agents (i.e., the Romans) had on them. I conducted excavations at a site called Urbarske Sedliska, just outside the town of Stupava, where there is a Roman-style structure that had a high concentration of imports from the province of Pannonia. An hypothesis of some scholars was that this structure had a strong Roman influence over the Germans living nearby. A field survey at Urbarske Sedliska resulted in the recovery of artifacts from various periods and two pits had high concentrations of German pottery and animal bones. Further investigations led to the discovery of two German huts. The material remains from them were compared to those of other huts further away from the frontier as well as to that of the Roman-style structure. It was found that the two huts had a material culture similar to that of huts further from the frontier and that the presence of the Roman-style structure did not have an effect on the prosperity of the huts. Related to these findings was the conclusion that the ancient Germans, while having access to a high volume of Roman material from Pannonia, did not relinquish their identity as a separate culture and people. The Germans maintained their Germanic identity through the continued use of traditional architecture and pottery, while integrating Roman goods within a German context.
