Book excerpt: That nuclear medicine has advanced so far and so fast is due in no small measure to GEORGE VON HEVESY. His work on radioactive indicator technique laid the foundation on which this young branch of medicine was able to develop in the decade which followed World War II. In the intervening years the second generation has grown up in nuclear medicine. Some of them were still exposed to VON HEVESY'S influence, for instance, his address to the 1957 meeting of the Italian Society of Nuclear Medicine in Turin, or his Marie Curie Memorial Lecture at the Pittsburg meeting of the North American Society of Nuclear Medicine in 1961. Others again will remember that he helped to found the European Society of Nuclear Medicine in 1962-1963 and became its honorary president. It was VON HEVESY who, together with HEILMEYER, insisted that this be a completely open society, having neither national nor geographical attributes, its Europeanness being reflected in the variety of languages spoken at its congresses. Its members exhibited a similar variety, including in addition to those medically qualified -specialists in internal medicine, radiologists and laboratory research workers-physicists, chemists and engineers. A group of young second-generation scientists from eleven countries have dedicated these papers to the memory of the great pioneer of nuclear medicine. This book contains new results reported by doctors, physicists, chemists and computer specialists-results so far-ranging as to push the frontiers of nuclear medicine still further forward.

Book excerpt: The symposium on Angiography/Scintigraphy brought to Mainz in the fall of 1970 not only many European colleagues with an interest in these techniques, but also a number of visitors from overseas. These busy, work-filled days are beginning to fade in the memory of those who were there. Nevertheless, the scientific results reported on that occasion still supply the guidelines for what is currently being done in radiology and nuclear medicine. Anyone who has kept abreast of the literature over the past few years will have noted with some surprise how comparisons of the results obtained with these two important diagnostic aids continue to provoke controversy. One thing is certain: the emblem chosen for the Mainz symposium could hardly have been more appropriate. Like two cogwheels meshing in some complex piece of machinery, these radiological procedures demand the highest level of skill and precision before they will function properly on engaging so as to produce optimal results. Their findings complement each other in almost ideal fashion. Even though development in these two diagnostic disciplines has not exactly stood still since 1970, the papers given at this symposium established the fundamentals from which have stemmed many an intelligent adaptation of a method, many a cunning modification of an instrument and, not least, many a new research lead. This is why we applaud the initiative of Professor Diethelm of Mainz, whose brainchild this symposium was, in making the proceedings available to a wider audience.

Book excerpt: Two years only after the publication of the ? rst edition of “Contrast media – Safety issues and ESUR guidelines” in our book series Medical Radiology in 2006, it appeared that a second edition was urgently needed. The ? rst edition was indeed an exceptional success with our readership and sold out rapidly, but moreover the safety of MR contrast media urgently required a reappraisal after the publication of a new and dramatic adverse reaction to some of the gadolini- based agents: the so called NSF syndrome. I am very much indebted to Professor Henrik S. Thomsen and his academic colleagues from the ESUR Contrast Medium Safety Committee for accepting the task to prepare a second edition of their remarkable book.Within a record short period of time they have been able to complete this fully revised new volume. It offers to the readers a comprehensive overview of all problems related to the use of contrast media in modern radiology and of our latest knowledge and insights in the mechanisms of adverse reactions related to contrast media. It answers all questions that radiologists and referring physicians are confronted with in their daily practice when they consider the administration of these agents to their patients.
