Book excerpt: Frontiers of Biological Energetics, Volume II: Electrons to Tissues contains most of the papers presented at the International Symposium on "Frontiers of Biological Energetics: Electrons to Tissues," held at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 20-21, 1978. The symposium provided a forum for discussing the common problems of biological energetics from different perspectives and from various levels of cellular organization. Comprised of 84 chapters, this volume begins with a section on electrons and oxygen and covers topics ranging from the chemical constitutions and subunit function of cytochrome oxidase polypeptides to the structure and function of copper atoms in cytochrome oxidase. The next section deals with structural-functional approaches to membrane energetics and includes chapters that explore rhodopsin and bacteriorhodopsin in model membranes; the mechanism of free energy utilization for active transport of calcium ions; and the regulation of cytoplasmic calcium by liver mitochodria. The final section focuses on nondestructive measurements of tissue function, paying particular attention to phosphorus nuclear magnetic resonance of diseased muscle and extracellular oxygen gradients in shock, among other topics. This book should be of interest to scientists from a variety of disciplines, including medicine and biology.

Book excerpt: In May 2007, the National Academies Chemical Sciences Roundtable held a public workshop on the topic of Bioinspired Chemistry for Energy, where government, academic, and industry representatives discussed promising research developments in solar-generated fuels, hydrogen-processing enzymes, artificial photosynthetic systems, and biological-based fuel cells. Workshop participants identified the need for a follow-up activity that would explore bioinspired energy processes in more depth and involve a wider array of disciplines as speakers and participants. Particularly, workshop participants stressed the importance of holding a workshop that would include more researchers from the biological sciences and engineering, as well as those involved in technological advances that enable progress in understanding these systems. Building upon the 2007 workshop, the National Academies Board on Chemical Sciences and Technology convened the Committee on Research Frontiers in Bioinspired Energy to organize a second workshop in 2011 which, according to the statement of task, would explore the molecular-level frontiers of energy processes in nature through an interactive, multidisciplinary, and public format. Specifically, the committee was charged to feature invited presentations and include discussion of key biological energy capture, storage, and transformation processes; gaps in knowledge and barriers to transitioning the current state of knowledge into applications; and underdeveloped research opportunities that might exist beyond disciplinary boundaries. Research Frontiers in Bioinspired Energy is an account of what occurred at the 2011 workshop, and does not attempt to present any consensus findings or recommendations of the workshop participants. It summarizes the views expressed by workshop participants, and while the committee is responsible for the overall quality and accuracy of the report as a record of what transpired at the workshop, the views contained in the report are not necessarily those of the committee.

Book excerpt: Frontiers of Biological Energetics, Volume I: Electrons to Tissues consists of papers presented at the 1978 International Symposium on ""Frontiers of Biological Energetics: Electrons to Tissues,"" held at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, on the occasion of the 65th birthday of Professor Britton Chance and of the 50th anniversary of the Johnson Research Foundation. The symposium aims to bring together scientists from many different disciplines to discuss the common problems of biological energetic from different standpoints and from various levels of cellular organization. Organized into three parts, the book begins with a discussion on the electrochemical interactions. It then continues to describe the electrons, protons, and energy. Lastly, the book presents new instrumental approaches to cellular biophysics.

Book excerpt: An interactive, multidisciplinary, public workshop, organized by a group of experts in biochemistry, biophysics, chemical and biomolecular engineering, chemistry, microbial metabolism, and protein structure and function, was held on January 6-7, 2011 in Washington, DC. Fundamental insights into the biological energy capture, storage, and transformation processes provided by speakers was featured in this workshop which included topics such as microbes living in extreme environments such as hydrothermal vents or caustic soda lakes (extremophiles) provided a fascinating basis for discussing the exploration and development of new energy systems. Breakout sessions and extended discussions among the multidisciplinary groups of participants in the workshop fostered information sharing and possible collaborations on future bioinspired research. Printed and web-based materials that summarize the committee's assessment of what transpired at the workshop were prepared to advance further understanding of fundamental chemical properties of biological systems within and between the disciplines. In addition, webbased materials (including two animated videos) were developed to make the workshop content more accessible to a broad audience of students and researchers working across disciplinary boundaries. Key workshop discussion topics included: Exploring and identifying novel organisms; Identifying patterns and conserved biological structures in nature; Exploring and identifying fundamental properties and mechanisms of known biological systems; Supporting current, and creating new, opportunities for interdisciplinary education, training, and outreach; and Applying knowledge from biology to create new devices and sustainable technology.

Book excerpt: Thermodynamics was created in the ?rst half of the 19th century as a theory designed to explain the functioning of heat engines converting heat into mechanical work. In the course of time, while the scope of research in this ?eld was being extended to a wider and wider class of energy transformations, thermodynamics came to be considered as a general theory of machines identi?ed with energy transducers. Imp- tant progress in biochemistry in the ?rst half of the 20th century, and in molecular biology in the second half, made it possible to think of treating even living organisms as machines, at least on the subcellular level. However, success in applying thermodynamics to elucidate the phenomenon of life has been rather mitigated. Two reasons seem to be responsible for this unsatisfactory s- uation. Nineteenth century thermodynamics dealt only with simple (homogeneous) systems in complete equilibrium. Although during the 20th century a nonequilibrium thermodynamics was developed, sta- ing with the Onsager theory of linear response and ending with the Prigogine nonlinear theory of dissipative structures, these theories still concern the originally homogeneous systems. Because living organisms are complex systems with a historically frozen spatial and functional structure, a thermodynamics of both nonequilibrium and complex s- tems is needed for their description. The ?rst goal of the present book is to formulate the foundations of such a thermodynamics.

Book excerpt: This book presents a complete review of biological energetics and responds systematically that there is no possible activity without bio-energy in the living bodies. In this case, we elucidate and describe concretely the generations of bio-energy and its properties, regulation of bio-energy metabolism, bio-energy transport and its theoretical description, the stability of bio-energy transport, the experimental evidences of correctness of bio-energy theory and its wide applications, as well as the use of bio-energy in living systems involving animals, plants and human beings. Additionally, the biological phenomena, processes and effects related to bio-energy are also delineated, explained and shed light on theoretical calculations and analyses, numerical simulations and experimental measurements using biology, molecular biology and biophysics. This book contains seven chapters, in which 380 pages and a great number of illustrations and figures reveal the theoretical and experimental results. It is intended for researchers, teachers, graduate students and upper-level undergraduate students.
