Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ischemic cardiomyopathy is considered as the main cause of heart failure in industrialized countries. The condition can occur at any age, but its prevalence increases with age. In general, careful evaluation of the patient's history and physical examination can provide useful information about the underlying causes. Several biomarkers and laboratory variables are very important parameters for physicians during the clinical decision making. Echocardiography along with other imaging and heart failure management techniques can provide key information to clinicians about these parameters. This information can be used to provide adequate medical interventions and improve patient health while reducing the risk of sudden death due to cardiac arrest. This volume of Frontiers in Heart Failure brings forth information about several topics related to assessing the risk of heart failure and treating patients who may be at high risk. Chapters in this volume cover topics such as ischemia, echocardiography, pharmacotherapy, interventional techniques and device therapies. Novel therapies, such as gene and cell strategies are also covered in this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remarkable progress has been made in understanding and treating heart failure. Among other developments, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and b blockers have been found to have beneficial therapeutic effects, reinforcing the view that heart failure may be both a hemodynamic and a neurohumoral disorder. The Japanese Heart Failure Society was established to curb the threat of heart failure through research, education, and clinical practice. At the Societys 2nd Annual Scientific Meeting in Sapporo, molecular biologists, physiologists, clinicians, surgeons, and researchers in related fields met to strengthen professional bonds for the ultimate goal of preventing death from heart failure. This book contains presentations from the Sapporo conference that provide new insights into heart failure in the areas of pathophysiology, cardiac sudden death, medical and surgical treatment, and promising new gene therapy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heart Failure (HF) is the final and common pathway of all cardiovascular diseases. Heart Failure: Bench to Bedside helps address a significant need to develop new paradigms and to identify novel therapeutic targets for this pervasive disease. An authoritative contribution to the field, this book provides a detailed description of new findings and emerging methodologies, as well as a critical clinical evaluation of the complex HF syndrome and future therapies. Heart Failure: Bench to Bedside includes a primer on gene profiling and bioenergetics of the normal heart and a discussion of the molecular, genetic, biochemical and cellular techniques critical to understanding HF. Further chapters discuss cardiac remodeling, oxidative stress, and alterations in other organs and systems that are often associated with HF. This book thoughtfully evaluates current and forthcoming diagnostic techniques and therapies, pharmaceutical and pharmacogenomic-based individualized medicine, gene and cell-based therapies, and the search for new frontiers. Heart Failure: Bench to Bedside presents a clear view of up-to-date approaches to clinical diagnosis and treatment, as well as offering insightful critiques of original and creative scientific thoughts on post-genomic HF research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Frontiers in Cardiovascular Health varies between and within nations, depend ing upon the level at which the battle is fought for better cardiovascular health. According to the 1997 World Health Report, 15 million deaths (i. e. 30% of the total number of deaths) were attributable to cardiovascular diseases and this number is on the rise. The projection for the year 2020 is quite alarming with an expected cardiovascular mortality reaching 50 million. Much of this burden is projected to occur in developing countries, more specifically in the most populous countries of the world, namely China and India. These countries are already burdened with infectious and parasitic diseases and are trying to eradicate such diseases. With increasing life expectancies people all over the world, especially in developing coun tries, are exposed to degenerative atherosclerosis resulting in increased cardiovascu lar mortality and morbidity. In developing countries, resources available for health care are very limited. For example many of the African countries spend less than $10 per person per year on his/her entire health care let alone cardiovascular health. The average health care budget for nearly two thirds of the global population is well below $100 per year, on a per capita basis. Therefore, in developing countries health promotion and primary prevention are the frontiers by necessity. Improving awareness and health education is not only a matter of choice but is an absolute necessity.

Book excerpt: This Volume of the series Cardiac and Vascular Biology offers a comprehensive and exciting, state-of-the-art work on the current options and potentials of cardiac regeneration and repair. Several techniques and approaches have been developed for heart failure repair: direct injection of cells, programming of scar tissue into functional myocardium, and tissue-engineered heart muscle support. The book introduces the rationale for these different approaches in cell-based heart regeneration and discusses the most important considerations for clinical translation. Expert authors discuss when, why, and how heart muscle can be salvaged. The book represents a valuable resource for stem cell researchers, cardiologists, bioengineers, and biomedical scientists studying cardiac function and regeneration.

Book excerpt: Frontiers in Myocardia is an eBook series which compiles information about the structure and function of myocardial (the heart muscles) and includes updated reviews on the recent developments in the treatment of associated diseases such as angina, cardiac arrhythmias and myocardial infarction. Advances in research on clinical sepsis in the last few decades have lead to the use of new concepts and treatment paradigms that have been tested and implemented in the clinical setting of Intensive Care Units around the world. An integrative approach towards understanding the pathophysiology of cardiac dysfunction in septic patients can, therefore, lead to better patient outcomes. The first volume of this series, Septic Cardiomyopathy: from bench-to-bedside, integrates new and old information about the molecular mechanisms, histopathological and electrophysiological alterations with novel findings for diagnosing treating septic cardiomyopathy. This eBook attempts to bridge the gap between basic and clinical scientists and presents new data on different aspects of cardiac physiology during critical illness in a single volume. Chapters in this volume also cover cardiovascular changes that occur as a consequence of sepsis including metabolic, mitochondrial arrhythmic changes. This eBook will add significant value to medical students, cardiac physicians and medical scientists engaged in the field of critical care medicine.
