Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the wood coffin burial tradition in Kinabatangan Valley, Sabah. Archaeological evidence from past and recent studies has shown that Kinabatangan Valley was the centre of the wood coffin burial tradition in Sabah. Until now, many limestone caves and rockshelters containing hundreds of wood coffins have been found along the Kinabatangan River. Archaeological research and radiocarbon dating of the wood coffins suggested that the tradition of wood coffin burial in Kinabatangan Valley commenced as early as 1,000 years ago and is still being practised by the communities of Sungai and Murut living in the vicinity of the Kinabatangan Valley. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The finding of prehistoric human remains in Sabah has been scarce until the discovery of two late Metal period burial sites in Semporna between years 2002 and 2007, i.e. Melanta Tutup and Bukit Kamiri. Prior to this, only a handful of human teeth found at Melanta Tutup (Neolithic) in 2002–2003 and later in 2005 at Gua Balambangan (late Palaeolithic), an island off the northern tip of Kudat. While these teeth had provided ample information about the prehistoric people, the discoveries of two burial sites at Semporna have provided several well-preserved prehistoric human remains. They provide a glimpse into these people’s identity, living conditions and environment. This book takes the palaeoanthropological approach on the human remains and attempts to answer some questions we have about the past populations in Semporna. Who were these people? Did they eat well? Did they suffer from any form of disease or injury? These questions are answered by studying in detail the skeletal remains of our ancestors from Semporna. Eng Ken Khong is currently a senior lecturer at the Centre for Global Archaeological Research based at Universiti Sains Malaysia. He obtained a BSc in Forensic Science (2004), a MA in Archaeology (2009) and PhD in Biology (Leeds), specialised in archaeogenetics. He worked as a Forensic Science Officer at the Forensic Medicine Department of General Hospital Ipoh (2004–2006) and General Hospital Penang (2007–2009), where he had expansive experience in field investigation and forensic anthropology. He involved in archaeological excavations and conservation of prehistoric human remains such as Niah Cave, Sarawak (2007), Pulau Kelumpang, Perak (2008) and Kem Terendak, Melaka (2018). His research findings has been published in books, journals, conference papers, and he has also contributed to invited talks at international level. Currently, his research focuses on phylogeography profile of aboringal people in Sabah.

All the history, ethnographic and archaeology data enhance the existing data which is an important perspective in the archaeological research specifically ethno-archaeology. It is also aligned with the aim to make archaeological research more multidisciplinary. For an ethno-archaeologist, this book shows the ethnographic data of the contemporary community to understand the behaviour, culture and the way of life of a prehistoric community especially those who reside in Lenggong Valley. Besides, it is hope that this book can infuse awareness on the importance of preserving cultural heritage to the society. Written in a clear and simple language, this book is recommended as a reading material and reference to all readers.

This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where will Muslim societies be tomorrow? The world is increasingly and constantly changing, making it hard to keep up. This makes the state much more dire and troublesome for those already marginalised – particularly Muslim societies. Normal is no longer capable of upholding the promise of tomorrow’s certainty. These are postnormal times. In this storm of ignorance and uncertainty, Muslim societies stand to lose the most. But this is not destiny. In the cultivation of a new type of literacy – futures literacy – there resides a hope. Muslim Societies in Postnormal Times offers an alternative where we can ‘rescue’ and decolonise our futures. Sardar, Serra, and Jordan take an open and plural approach to the future revealing the true potentials that lie before us. Through detailed analysis of contemporary trends, the road to destruction is revealed. Through identifying and exploring emerging issues, agency through options can allow for positive change. And in the extrapolation of these ideas into scenarios, the authors pave the way for us to navigate our own preferred futures. Their study challenges the reader to think about the future in a new way, redefining the monolithic future as three tomorrows (Extended Present, Familiar Futures, and Unthought Futures), along the way ever watchful for Black Swans, Black Elephants, and the illustrious Black Jellyfish that could disrupt the path ahead. The authors pull no punches in critically evaluating the possibilities and nightmares that could potentially befall Muslim societies. Through a display of creativity and imagination, this book looks beyond the conventional to illuminate impacts in the context of the complex, interconnected world we find ourselves in. This informative and enlightening text will push readers to see beyond popular, yet native notions of present and future. In the exposition of the reader’s ignorance and uncertainty, they will begin to look for the unthought and take agency in recolonising and navigating their preferred tomorrow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a scholarly perspective on heritage as a discourse, concept and lived experience in Malaysia. It argues that heritage is not a received narrative but a construct in the making. Starting with alternative ways of “museumising” heritage, the book then addresses a broad range of issues involving multicultural and folklore heritage, the small town, nostalgia and the environment, and transnationalism and cosmopolitanism. In so doing it delivers an intervention in received ways of talking about and “doing” heritage in academic as well as state and public discourse in Malaysia, which are largely dominated by perspectives that do not sufficiently engage with the cultural complexities and sociopolitical implications of heritage. The book also critically explores the politics and dynamics of heritage production in Malaysia to contest “Malaysian heritage” as a stable narrative, exploring both its cogency and contingency, and builds on a deep engagement with a non-western society in the service of “provincialising” critical heritage studies, with the broader goal of contributing to Malaysian studies.

Book excerpt: Now that this study is completed and I wish to make due acknowledg ment to all those who have in any degree contributed towards its realization, my thoughts turn in the first place to the one to whom this book is dedicated. It is a great grief to me that he who took such an intense interest in my work has not lived to see its conclusion. It was he who in the beginning urged me to venture upon this course of study and whose encouragement helped me in moments of de spondency. The high standard which, with his keen and critical judgment, he set for his own work, was an example to me, and I shall strive to maintain it in my future studies. Not only did he help me to lay the foundation of my knowledge of archive science, but he was also my guide in a field new to me in many respects, that of Asian maritime trade. His wide knowledge of medieval European trade in the Baltic area led me to compare and contrast the two worlds of East and West and thus helped me to obtain a deeper insight into the differences and similarities between the various problems involved. I am greatly indebted to Prof. Dr. J. M. Romein, who has followed the progress of my studies with great interest all these years, and on whose help and support, sometimes in very difficult circumstances, I have always been able to rely.
