Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From School to College Young women and young men, you have now finished your preparatory studies at the Wash bum School and are about to enter college. Your teachers have given you much wise counsel, but the chances are that you have been so busy trying to remember the genders and declensions of Latin nouns, the conjugations of verbs, or the processes of proving that something of no importance at all is equal to something else of even less importance, that you have not had time to consider or even to remember their advice about things that are really vital. So perhaps just now, the first time you have had a little breathing spell for years, you are in a mood to listen to one who is pretty familiar with the road you must travel, and who has helped guide along it many feet both willing and wayward. When David Copperfield, a very small orphan with all the serious problems of life pressing hard upon him, turned up, foot-sore and begrimed, at the door of his Aunt Betsy Trotwood, that goodwoman applied to her oracle for advice as to what she should do with him. And Mr. Dick, instead of going into the boy's past or looking into his future, and without considering the rights, duties and privileges of all parties concerned, simply looked at What was in front of him and replied: If I was you I should wash him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty Years of School and College English The papers in this pamphlet are republished as a contribution to the discussion provoked by the reports which were presented in 1892 and 1895 to the Board of Overseers of Harvard College by the Committee on Composition and Rhetoric. Each paper was written independently; the author of each was, at 'the time of writing, charged with the duty of reading the examination books in English produced by candidates for admission to Harvard College. The first paper, Oopies of which were sent by the College authorities to the masters of over two hundred and twenty schools, was published only five years after an examination in English composition was for the first time prescribed for admission the last, after examinations in that subject had been going on for nearly twenty years. Taken together, the five papers show a remarkable agreement both in facts and in inferences and both facts and inferences tend to sustain the general conclusion reached on independent grounds by the Committee of the Board of Overseers - the conclusion that the Secondary Schools need to pay more attention to English. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American College But in this region the American college merges itself into the university, and it may be fairly asserted that in the last year and in some colleges in the last two years the student is really a university student. In these various ways we are to-day experimenting in order to find a form under which to organize the rapidly-increasing mass of elective studies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of the American College Intermediate education began at seven, when the boy was registered as a prospective citizen and began to go to school. The school houses were public property and were rented to the schoolmasters, of whom there were two; one for gymnastic, and the other for music; and to both the pupil went every day. Higher education began at about fourteen, and continued until the young man reached his majority. During this period the elegant gym nastic of the preceding period was continued, and was supplemented by athletic and military training. Rich men's sons from private schools may take it carelessly, as some thing to enjoy unearned, like their own daily bread; yet the true title to it is the title earned in college day by day. The privilege of entering college admits to the privilege of deserving college; col lege life belongs to the great things, at once joyous and solemn, that are not to be entered into lightly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My College Days As the Grammar-school of Columbia College in New York was the last elementary classical academy of which I was a prrpil, it may be re garded as the place where I was prepared for college. This Grammar-school, when I entered it, was in Murray Street, New York, in the rear of Columbia College, upon a part of the grounds of which it, a plain, square brick structure, was built. There was no access, however, from the school to the park of the college, for fear, perhaps, that we rude boys might trample down its greensward.
