Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Abraham smashing his father’s idols might be the most important Jewish story ever told and the key to how Jews define themselves. In a work at once deeply erudite and wonderfully accessible, Rabbi Jeffrey K. Salkin conducts readers through the life and legacy of this powerful story and explains how it has shaped Jewish consciousness. Offering a radical view of Jewish existence, The Gods Are Broken! views the story of the young Abraham as the “primal trauma” of Jewish history, one critical to the development of a certain Jewish comfort with rebelliousness and one that, happening in every generation, has helped Jews develop a unique identity. Salkin shows how the story continues to reverberate through the ages, even in its connection to the phenomenon of anti-Semitism. Salkin’s work—combining biblical texts, archaeology, rabbinic insights, Hasidic texts (some never before translated), philosophy, history, poetry, contemporary Jewish thought, sociology, and popular culture—is nothing less than a journey through two thousand years of Jewish life and intellectual endeavor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays is the first to address this often obscured dimension of modern and contemporary poetry: the secular Jewish dimension. Editors Daniel Morris and Stephen Paul Miller asked their contributors to address what constitutes radical poetry written by Jews defined as "secular," and whether or not there is a Jewish component or dimension to radical and modernist poetic practice in general. These poets and critics address these questions by exploring the legacy of those poets who preceded and influenced them--Stein, Zukofsky, Reznikoff, Oppen, and Ginsberg, among others.

Book excerpt: Heaven has received a lot of attention in recent years as bestselling books and movies have told the stories of people who claim to have been there. But what does the Bible actually say about heaven? What difference does it make? What happens the moment after we die? What will our relationships be like in heaven? Chip Ingram sets aside the hype and myths and digs into the Scriptures to discover what God actually wants us to know about the hereafter. Most importantly, Ingram shows why our understanding of heaven matters now, in this life. Because what we believe about heaven actually affects us today in ways we may not have imagined.

Book excerpt: In this book, first published in 1991, the prolific and innovative British biblical scholar Margaret Barker sets out to explore the origins and the afterlife of traditions about the Temple in Judaism. Using evidence from the deutero-canonical and pseudepigraphic texts, Qumran and rabbinic material, as well as early Christian texts and liturgies, she advances a host of radical and suggestive theories, including the following: 1. Apocalyptic writing was the temple tradition. 2. Temple buildings were aligned to establish a solar calendar, thus explaining the astronomical texts incorporated in 1 Enoch 3. The temple symbolism of priest and sanctuary antedated the Eden stories of Genesis. 4. The temple buildings depicted heaven and earth separated by a veil of created matter. 5. The throne visions, the basis of the later Merkavah mysticism, originated as high priestly sanctuary experiences, first attested in Isaiah but originating in the royal cult when king figures passed beyond the temple veil from earth into heaven, from immortality to the resurrected state, and then returned.

Book excerpt: Heritage Edition— interlaced with nearly 300 special illustrations, some 20 charts, and over 100 poems from a century ago. This is a collection of readings on two hundred topics in which are answered nearly four thousand questions on important spiritual and religious subjects, contributed by a large number of Bible students. First published in 1914 as a "NEW, REVISED, AND ENLARGED EDITION," "Illuminated With Nearly Three Hundred Beautiful Illustrations" with "Over 1,250,000 Copies of Former edition Sold." Briefly stated, a Bible reading consists of questions asked concerning some subject, and answers to them from the Bible. In other words, Bible readings mean a topical study of the Bible by means of questions and answers. There are two introductory chapters, "The Bible; Its Origin, History, and Place in the World," and "The Value of Bible Study." The two hundred readings are organized under eighteen headings: I. THE BIBLE; HOW TO STUDY AND UNDERSTAND IT II. SIN; ITS ORIGIN, RESULTS, AND REMEDY III. THE WAY TO CHRIST IV. LIFE, PARABLES, AND MIRACLES OF CHRIST V. THE HOLY SPIRIT VI. THE SURE WORD OF PROPHECY VII. COMING EVENTS AND SIGNS OF THE TIMES VIII. THE LAW OF GOD IX. THE SABBATH X. CHRISTIAN LIBERTY XI. LIFE ONLY IN CHRIST XII. CHRISTIAN GROWTH AND EXPERIENCE XIII. PRAYER AND PUBLIC WORSHIP XIV. CHRISTIAN SERVICE XV. ADMONITIONS AND WARNINGS XVI. THE HOME XVII. HEALTH AND TEMPERANCE XVIII. THE KINGDOM RESTORED The readings in this book as originally prepared were contributed by a large number of Bible workers, whose experience in giving Bible readings had taught them the most effective methods of presenting the different subjects treated. The reader and student of this volume will gain a richer and clearer understanding of the Bible and of its practical value in everyday life. Especially, will there be a more comprehensive understanding of the end-time prophecies of the books of Daniel and Revelation with such subjects such as the Antichrist; the Rapture; the Mark of the Beast; Armageddon; the Millennium; and Eden Restored. A clear understanding of Bible teaching regarding such subjects as the State of the Dead; What, When, and Where is Hell; and Which is the True Lord's Day will prove to greatly protect one from Satan's end-time deceptions. "Bible Readings for the Home Circle" will be found an excellent aid to private, family, and public study of the Word of God.

This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Enoch is an ancient Judean work that inaugurated the genre of apocalypse. Chapters 1-36 tell the story of the descent of angels called "Watchers" from heaven to earth to marry human women before the time of the flood, the chaos that ensued, and God's response. They also relate the journeying of the righteous scribe Enoch through the cosmos, guided by angels. Heaven, including the place and those who dwell there (God, the angels, and Enoch), plays a central role in the narrative. But how should heaven be understood? Existing scholarship, which presupposes "Judaism" as the appropriate framework, views the Enochic heaven as reflecting the temple in Jerusalem, with God's house replicating its architecture and the angels and Enoch functioning like priests. Yet recent research shows the Judeans constituted an ethnic group, and this view encourages a fresh examination of 1 Enoch 1-36. The actual model for heaven proves to be a king in his court surrounded by his courtiers. The major textual features are explicable in this perspective, whereas the temple-and-priests model is unconvincing. The author was a member of a nontemple, scribal group in Judea that possessed distinctive astronomical knowledge, promoted Enoch as its exemplar, and was involved in the wider sociopolitical world of their time.

Book excerpt: Presentations of offerings to the emperor-king on anniversaries of his accession became an important imperial ritual in the court of Franz Joseph I. This book explores for the first time the identity constructions of Orthodox Jewish communities in Jerusalem as expressed in their gifts to the Austro-Hungarian Kaisers at the time of dramatic events. It reveals how the beautiful gifts, their dedications, and their narratives, were perceived by gift-givers and recipients as instruments capable of acting upon various social, cultural and political processes. Lily Arad describes in a captivating manner the historical narratives of the creation and presentation of these gifts. She analyzes the iconography of these gifts as having transformative effect on the self-identification of the Jewish communities and examines their reception by the Kaisers and in the Austrian and the Palestinian Jewish press. This groundbreaking book unveils Jewish cultural and political strategies aimed to create local Eretz-Israel identities, demonstrating distinct positive communal identification which at times expressed national sentiments and at the same time preserved European identification.
