Book excerpt: Nonfiction. FROM FEATHERS TO IRON--a series of lectures by John Clarke--has virtually no precedent in the literature of poetic interpretation. It is at once a profound revelation of the physics of poetic intelligence and a brilliantly conceived declaration of "the implicate order of the universe." "How rarely I come upon a truly useful book. Clarke has packed it all in here and wherever you open the pages, jewels, pearls, crowns tumble out. I see illustrations to the Arabian Nights. I have already picked up and walked off with treasures"--James Hillman.

This book was released on 2010-08-15 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once, when I was still a child, my father asked me:'Which weighs more: 1 kilo of iron or 1 kilo of feathers?'I remember that sure of myself I answered him quickly: 'Surely 1 kilo of iron weighs more, dad, because metal things, like the armor of medieval knights, are very heavy, while the feathers that decorate birds' wings are very light'.I can't tell you how disappointed I was when I heard him say:'No my son, that's wrong: they weigh the same, because 1 kilo is always 1 kilo!'Maybe because of the evening trick questions from my dad, when I grew up I decided to become a physicist, and to my big surprise I discovered that I was right when I was a child. Indeed: On the Earth, even if only by a little, 1 kilo of iron weighs more than 1 kilo of feathers!Don't worry, the sawdust that I have in my head has not caught on fire! But I hope that I have made you curious and that now you will want to come hunting with me for this strange and heavy mistake.

Riverdale meets Final Destination in this fast-paced and deliciously creepy novel about an innocent game that turns deadly at a high school sleepover. It was supposed to be a game… Junior year is shaping up to be the best of McKenna Brady’s life. After a transformative summer, McKenna is welcomed into the elite group of popular girls at Weeping Willow High, led by the gorgeous Olivia Richmond. For the first time in a long time, things are looking up. But everything changes the night of Olivia’s Sweet Sixteen sleepover. Violet, the mysterious new girl in town, suggests the girls play a game during which Violet makes up elaborate, creepily specific stories about the violent ways the friends will die. Though it unsettles McKenna, it all seems harmless at the time. Until a week later, when Olivia dies…exactly as Violet predicted. As Violet rises to popularity and steps into the life Olivia left unfinished, McKenna becomes convinced Olivia’s death wasn’t just a coincidence, especially when a ghost haunting her bedroom keeps leaving clues that point to Violet. With the help of her cute neighbor, Trey, McKenna pledges to get to the bottom of Violet’s secrets and true intentions before it’s too late. Because it’s only a matter of time before more lives are lost.

Book excerpt: From bestselling, award-winning Jane Feather, hailed as “an author to treasure” by Romantic Times, comes this passionate tale of an iron-willed nobleman who suddenly becomes the guardian of a mischievous, orphaned beauty. Chloe Gresham wasn’t expecting a warm welcome—after all, her new guardian was a total stranger. But when Sir Hugo Lattimer strode into Denholm Manor after a night of carousing and discovered he’d been saddled with an irrepressible and beautiful young ward, the handsome bachelor made it perfectly clear he wanted nothing to do with her. Chloe, however, had ideas of her own. . . . Driven by dark memories to a tormenting despair, the last thing Hugo needed was an irritating, infuriating, unpredictable schoolgirl, especially one whose stunning beauty and natural sensuality challenged his self-control. Yet he owed it to the lass to turn her into a proper lady and marry her off to a wealthy young lord in London. And by God he would do it . . . if only he could resist the temptation to bring her to his bed . . . and if only he could keep her safe from those who would use an innocent young woman for shameless revenge.

Book Synopsis How We Experience Modern Verse by : Eric Purchase
Download or read book How We Experience Modern Verse written by Eric Purchase and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-31 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry moves us. Sometimes a poem changes our life. Then we analyze it as a cultural artifact with no special connection to us. An extensive critical apparatus enables us to develop sophisticated interpretations, but we dismiss as "idiosyncratic" even life-changing experiences of poetry. We need an apparatus to unfold our experience of reading poems into a more effective relationship with the world. Modern poets in particular wrote prophetic verse for this purpose. Archetypal psychology and phenomenology describe the soul that modern poetry moves in us. Three prosodic mechanisms activate the psyche. The polyphony of accentual and quantitative versification creates depth to lure the soul. Aural images reshape the reader’s stream of consciousness. Readers follow the movement of blocks of verse across the expanse of the page with what Maurice Merleau-Ponty terms the phenomenal body. These mechanisms reach us at the collective level of consciousness and generate the power we need to solve big, collective challenges, such as race, climate change, and inequality.

Book excerpt: Death asks a half-troll and his friends to save the world in this epic fantasy series debut by the author of the Clockwork Empire series. Although Danr is the son of a human mother, his father was one of the hated Stanes, trolls from the mountains. Now the barrel-chested teenager is condemned to hard labor on a farm where he endures taunts of “Troll boy” from the others. Yet no matter how bad things get, he always remembers the advice of his recently departed mother: be gentle and do not unleash the monster inside. One of Danr’s few friends in the village, Aisa, was sold into slavery by her father and is now controlled by an abusive man. She keeps herself covered from head to toe and dreams of a better future. She and Danr hope to escape and make their way to freedom, but a series of dark events soon stirs up chaos. Strange creatures come down from the mountains, slaughtering villagers. Spirits of the dead haunt the land, terrifying those that are still alive. As rumors spread about the Stanes’ involvement, Danr decides to find out the truth, taking Aisa and an amnesiac new friend with him. Soon they are called up by Death herself to set things right. At Death’s request, the group sets out to recover the Iron Axe. Crafted by the dwarves, it is capable of restoring balance in the world—and destroying it, too. Along the way, Danr must call upon the monster within to face fierce and fantastic creatures while discovering truths that will change their lives forever. “[Turns] common tropes on their heads. . . . [Harper’s] reinterpretations of trolls, giants, and fae folk give this series opener a fresh feeling, while his nods to Norse mythology and folklore root it strongly in fantasy tradition.Readers will be eager to see what’s in store for Aisa and Danr.” —Publishers Weekly “Brought back fond memories of a classic fantasy book while still offering a wonderfully unique take on the genre. . . . Steven Harper created a world that I never got tired of exploring.” —The Qwillery “The story holds all of the adventure, magic, and mystery I have come to expect from the genre. . . .[It] follows a hero’s journey . . . with energy and artfulness.” —Wicked Little Pixie

Book excerpt: Officer Harry Feversham leaves his military position right before an important battle to the disappointment of his three closest friends and the woman he loves. Appalled by his decision, they each gift him with one striking symbol—a white feather. A young British soldier, Harry Feversham, suddenly resigns from his post and leaves his regiment. He is quickly overcome with shame as he receives four feathers, which signify his cowardice. Three are from his peers Captain Trench, Lieutenant Castleton and Lieutenant Willoughby, and one is from his fiancée, Ethne Eustace. Driven by guilt, Harry participates in various heroic acts to regain his honor and return their feathers. The Four Feathers is one of A.E.W. Mason’s most famous works. It explores the unbearable weight of status and reputation in a world driven by strict codes. It has been adapted multiple times for television and film. The most notable version was the 2002 feature starring Oscar-winner Heath Ledger as Harry. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of The Four Feathers is both modern and readable.
