Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: His mother's neck broke while he vaguely watched . . . The ocean that was once a blanket for the village, smothered the village and killed her sister . . . And both wind up in a school that seemingly has the motto "From savage to civilized." Hotah Often getting pneumonias and being conceived by rape, Hotah lived in a Hopi village with his great-grandmother deep in her nineties but said, "The hell with a walking stick." His whole life, he had seen war sprout, such as witnessing his grandmother's brutal death and severed body parts thrown to the railroad. But most of that had not given him troubled thoughts. It was mostly his mother's hanging, perhaps, because he had to help carry her dead body back home. As an eighty-one-year-old man, Hotah recaptures his time at both home and the St. Mary's Indian Mission School he was sent to shortly after his mother's dismiss. Traumatized at the school, his memories play to him over and over again while meeting his first crush and someone he shares an unlikely bond with. Kai Kai was the only Hawaiian at the Indian Mission School, as there were no records of Hawaiian children being sent to these schools. Kai was taken with a few other villagers to a refugee camp after the tsunami but very faintly remembered how she arrived at the school. Orphaned at birth, Kai was raised by her much-older sister Haunani but lost Haunani to the storm. As a woman, she speaks of her memories at home and the mission school, which involved meeting a person whose face she never forgot.

Download or read book Descriptosaurus written by Alison Wilcox and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in its fully updated fourth edition, the bestselling Descriptosaurus is the first book for creative writing that is a thematic expansion of a dictionary and a thesaurus; it provides students with a language toolkit with which to expand their descriptive vocabulary, experiment with language and sentence structure and build up narratives based around settings, characters and creatures. Descriptosaurus positions the word, zooms in on it to examine the meaning, expands it into phrases, and then provides alternatives in words, phrases and sentences; the model was created and refined over a number of years as a result of feedback from students inside and outside the classroom as to the resources they required to inspire and assist them with their writing. For reluctant writers or those faced with blank page syndrome, it provides essential starting points to encourage putting pen to paper, not only inspiring students, but also building their confidence, encouraging them to use, apply and create using the correct grammatical structures, and adding colour to their writing through evaluation and experimentation. New features for this expanded edition include: - Additional vocabulary, including technical vocabulary for non-fiction topics such as volcanoes, mountains and caves - An additional chapter to cover the popular primary topic of cold climates and polar exploration - How to use word clines to expand vocabulary and explore shades of meaning - Guidelines, resources and models to scaffold learning about grammar - Sentences that have been expanded and reworked to provide modelled sentences for DFI (Detail, Flow and Impact) - Guidelines, resources, exercises and models to support the teaching of sentence construction using imitation, combining and expansion techniques Accompanied by Instructor and Student Resources containing all the games, planning sheets and vocabulary builders from the book, this is an ideal resource to dramatically improve students' creative writing, confidence and facility with sentence construction for all primary and secondary English teachers, literacy coordinators and parents. It would also make an excellent classroom book for PGCE students, particularly Primary PGCE with English specialism.

Download or read book Leaning on the Wind written by Sid Marty and published by Heritage House Publishing Co. This book was released on 2011-02-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A finalist for the 1995 Governor General's Literary Award for English-language non-fiction Winner of the Mountain Environment and Culture Award at the 1995 Banff Mountain Book Festival Leaning on the Wind is a love song of the west, sung to the tune of the wild chinook wind. Sid Marty skilfully weaves together the prehistory of Alberta with the experiences of First Nations, miners, early homesteaders and his own family. At the centre of his tale is the Marty homestead, located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Sid looks back through generations of his family and celebrates the feats of wild creatures and wild westerners. The past comes alive in these pages, but so does the present, where you will meet cowboy poets, bull riders, sailplane pilots, desperate chicken farmers, curmudgeonly broncos, a homicidal cow elk, some dubious politicians and several fierce defenders of the earth. Humour and sardonic wit abound, along with abundant affection for the western earth and the people who depend on its bounties and experience its extremes of wind, frost and drought. A western classic, Leaning on the Wind is as evocative today as when it was first published in 1995.
