Book excerpt: The story of how Italians struggled to earn the right to live and work amidst an Anglo-Saxon society. It is a story of fear: the Britishers' fear that the 'swarthy' undesirables would threaten their jobs and their way of life; the fear, as WW2 erupted, that Italians might sabotage the war effort and assist the Axis powers to take over Australia.

Book excerpt: Blair Beebe, M.D. Medical lessons from Vietnam; what did we learn? Almost fifty years after the beginning of American involvement in the Vietnam War, we still remain embroiled in military actions that generate disease, disability, and death. Frontline physicians who were in places like Afghanistan, Iraq, Bosnia, Herzegovina, and Vietnam faced the medical consequences of war every day. My new novel, Doc Lucas USN, based on real people and real events, brings the war down to a human scale, one person at a time. History gives us statistics and dates, but fiction helps us to better understand the meaning behind those facts. One of my old professors defined history as lies we tell about dead people. We understand more from reading Homer, Sophocles, Shakespeare, Margaret Mitchell, and Stephen Ambrose than we ever learned from dry history textbooks. Paradoxically, the truth comes out in fiction. During my time in Vietnam, and for many years after, I listened to stories from other physicians who served during the war and from naval aviators and marines who faced combat every day. I also heard different points of view from Vietnamese civilians who had come to America to escape the chaos after the war. Their eyewitness accounts are the true history, but unless someone writes them down, we lose them forever. Moreover, individual stories may have little meaning to us if they lack context. Ive often heard both veterans and civilians say, I dont talk about my experiences, because anyone who wasnt there could never understand how bad it was. Thats why we need a novel to give us a complete account in an organized way. Each character and each scene moves the action to develop a central theme about the war. We want more than anecdotes. We want to understand the how and the why of the unfolding tragedy. Doc Lucas not only recounts the stories, he lives them. We feel his anxiety, his terror, and at times, his joy. When things go wrong, we know why, and we can feel his despair. In the good times, and there are many, we laugh along with him. In the end, Doc Lucas learns important lessons about himself and his values centered on human rights and the relief of suffering. He emerges from the war better equipped to take his place with stronger convictions about his role in his society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is the story of my experiences with the medium bomber designated by the Army as a B-26 and named by the British the Marauder. The book includes a history of the development of the plane. My war experience began with ferrying our Marauder to England, which included a Sahara Desert stretch from Dakar to Marrakesh. Less than a third of the way there we lost the right engine but flew on safely on one engine, making an emergency landing at the oasis village of Tindouf, an old French Foreign Legion base. The Marauders were involved in the tragic, low-level mission over the E-boat pens in Holland where 60 percent of the officers and airmen and all ten aircraft were lost. This mission resulted in a reconsideration of low level operations in Europe (decision: move to medium altitude). My journal entries were created after each mission and offer details (target, date, crew members, their emotions, action narrative) of 50 combat missions (Appendix A). Considerable background on the design and construction of the Marauder is included, as well as a description of the B-26 reconstructed by the Confederate (now: Commemorative) Air Force. The book ends with a description of each of the crew members and their activity since the war if available."

Book excerpt: “My Unbelievable Journey” is a powerful autobiography from a flight aircrewman’s perspective. During his service, he and his crew were involved in numerous unique and dangerous missions while supporting our country and NATO allies. The flights take the reader on a worldwide journey divulging what our crewmen endure and encounter in their daily lives. It reveals the impact on their families being away from home for weeks while serving and protecting our nation. The story places the reader on the ground, both in hostile and non-hostile environments, many of which are directly in “harm’s way.” Various humanitarian missions are covered from earthquake relief in Japan and Turkey to joint military exercises in Iran and Sardinia. Several “special missions” are spotlighted like the ill-fated C-5 crash, the prelude to the “Baby-lift” evacuation in Vietnam, the Syrian-Egyptian war support in Israel, and the transportation of cruise missiles in Europe. At a U-2 site in Europe, a real-life spy encounter is detailed, along with a massive Iranian evacuation that led to hostages taken. The book describes, in depth, the survival training which flight crews must complete. The author explains escape and evasion tactics and how to survive a crash at sea. It is a candid narration, guaranteed to leave the reader with that feeling of “Mission Accomplished.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The information herein was accumulated of fifty some odd years. The collection process started when TV first came out and continued until today. The books are in alphabetical order and cover shows from the 1940s to 2010. The author has added a brief explanation of each show and then listed all the characters, who played the roles and for the most part, the year or years the actor or actress played that role. Also included are most of the people who created the shows, the producers, directors, and the writers of the shows. These books are a great source of trivia information and for most of the older folk will bring back some very fond memories. I know a lot of times we think back and say, "Who was the guy that played such and such a role?" Enjoy!
