Book excerpt: The research presented in this thesis aims to connect Aristotle’s theory of catharsis to modern applied theatre for children with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. In ancient Greece, forms of applied theatre were utilized for soldiers returning home from war. The Greek tragic plays directly dealt with traumas that these soldiers may have experienced, depicting distinct symptoms of what is now known as PTSD. However, PTSD does not only effect soldiers, but can be prominent in anyone, including children, who has experienced a traumatic event. Catharsis in Greek tragedy is considered an outcome that releases the toxic emotions that are prevalent in individuals with PTSD. However, the outcome of catharsis in the tragedies would not be as effective without the support of the Chorus. In this thesis, applied theatre practitioners and companies Craig Haen, Rivka Felsenstein, the Hancock Center for Dance Therapy, and Storycatchers Theatre are studied to connect the prominence of catharsis in children and teenagers as a result of the use of Choral conventions when expressing a tragic story. The Choral conventions referred to are dance, music, and mask. I hypothesize that catharsis effected through theatre experience is produced in participatory applied theatre for young participants, pre-school age to teenage, who have Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
