Download or read book A Secret Garden written by B. N. Goswamy and published by Scheidegger and Spiess. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Danielle Porret’s passion for Asian art and for Indian painting in particular was inflamed when she attended classes on Asian mythology during her studies at Geneva University. It intensified further when in 1966 she visited an exhibition in London of Indian paintings collected by Mildred and William Archer, curators of Indian art at the British India office and the Victoria & Albert Museum respectively. A conference interpreter by profession, Porret began to study the collections of Asian art at London’s great museums and the technique of paper restoration. And she started to buy Indian paintings herself. Danielle Porret’s collection comprises outstanding works spanning seven centuries from the time of the Sultans (1206–1526) through to the nineteenth century. While many museums house representative art-historical inventories, Porret describes her collection as a “secret garden” compiled on the basis of her own personal taste. The new book A Secret Garden features 105 paintings from Porret’s collection. The essays are contributed by leading experts in the area of Indian painting: B.N. Goswamy (Pahari painting), Jeremiah P. Losty (the painting of Rajasthan and central India), and John Seyller (Mogul- und Dekkan painting, as well as the painting from the time of the Sultans). The book is published to coincide with an exhibition at the Museum Rietberg in Zürich in spring 2014.
Book Synopsis Gardens of Delight by : Rahoul B Singh

Book excerpt: India's complex and fascinating history is reflected in the story of its gardens – and those who built them, enjoyed them, painted and wrote about them. From the first references to gardens in the ancient Hindu texts of the Ramayana and the Kama Sutra to the palace gardens of Rajasthan and Udaipur, this book takes us on a compelling visual and cultural journey. 'Gardens of Delight' examines historical and traditional gardens, gardens in literature and art, sacred and palace gardens, and the concept of the garden in modern India, providing a complete view of how a people’s relationship with their land has changed over time. The influence of the Indian garden worldwide as well as the assimilation of external influences is also key to this rich and intriguing story.

Book Synopsis Garden and Landscape Practices in Pre-colonial India by : Daud Ali
Download or read book Garden and Landscape Practices in Pre-colonial India written by Daud Ali and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-11-29 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a set of new and innovative essays on landscape and garden culture in precolonial India, with a special focus on the Deccan. Most research to date has concentrated on the comparatively well preserved gardens and built landscapes of the celebrated Mughal empire, giving the impression that they have been lacking in other times and regions. Not only does this volume provide a corrective to such assumptions, it also moves away from traditional art-historical approaches by posing new questions and exploring hitherto neglected source materials. The contributors understand gardens in two related ways: first as real or imagined spaces and manipulated landscapes that are often invested with pronounced semiotic density; and second as congeries of institutions and practices with far-reaching social ramifications for the constitution of elite societies. The essays here present a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of garden culture in precolonial India, and together suggest several new and exciting directions of enquiry for those working in the Deccan, Mughal India, and beyond.
