Book excerpt: Essayist and poet Thad Box experienced poverty first hand as a small boy living on a tenant farm. His poems present a child's eye view of one of our country's major events. The Great Depression spawned a social and economic upheaval in American culture as great as the revolution that formed this country. With the possible exception of the Civil War, no event in our nation's history has been as significant. The people who lived through the Depression become fewer with each passing year. Most who were adults at the beginning of the depression are gone. Box's poems make history live through the tales of children. "Me 'n' Alvin" describes the joys and disappointments of a ten-year-old boy during the time between the stock market crash of 1929 and the attack on Pearl Harbor. Although it is about sharecropper children in the Central Texas Hill Country, it captures the hopes and dreams of poor kids everywhere who do not consider themselves poor. Box tells the stories through a series of narrative poems written in the vernacular, yet poetic voice of Hill Country people. He describes life of subsistence farmers and the heartbreak of being displaced by well meaning New Deal government programs. Games played by children, the wonder of becoming "rich" when the make-work dam construction pays 40 cents an hour, Sunday dinners, and celebrations are told through his eyes and with the voice of a precocious child.: Doing what hound dogs do or finding out about birds and bees are woven into the poems. Learning the facts of life was not just about sex. It often involved becoming aware of the problems of grownups: the lack of money, the stress of being put off the farm, the knowledge that the family was poor. But the joys of a child exploring his poverty cocoon, the love of his parents, the thrill of learning all become part of understanding the facts of life. A child's curiosity about sex is not ignored. The boys knew about billy goats, Maltese jacks, and roosters because their function on the farm was part of the natural process. But making the transition from understanding animal breeding to girls was an unending mystery. The book covers the time from shortly after Franklin Roosevelt's election in the 1930s until the attack on Pearl Harbor. It was a time when many farm families were moving to California in search of a better life. Hobos and gypsies traveled from town to town in search of food. Soup kitchens filled less than basic needs of major cities. Obituaries of people who lived through these times fill newspapers across this land. This book is unique in that it captures a child's view of one of the major social changes of our country. The poems teach history with a smile.

Book Synopsis Wound from the Mouth of a Wound by : torrin a. greathouse
Download or read book Wound from the Mouth of a Wound written by torrin a. greathouse and published by Milkweed Editions. This book was released on 2020-12-22 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A versatile missive written from the intersections of gender, disability, trauma, and survival. “Some girls are not made,” torrin a. greathouse writes, “but spring from the dirt.” Guided by a devastatingly precise hand, Wound from the Mouth of a Wound—selected by Aimee Nezhukumatathil as the winner of the 2020 Ballard Spahr Prize for Poetry—challenges a canon that decides what shades of beauty deserve to live in a poem. greathouse celebrates “buckteeth & ulcer.” She odes the pulp of a bedsore. She argues that the vestigial is not devoid of meaning, and in kinetic and vigorous language, she honors bodies the world too often wants dead. These poems ache, but they do not surrender. They bleed, but they spit the blood in our eyes. Their imagery pulses on the page, fractal and fluid, blooming in a medley of forms: broken essays, haibun born of erasure, a sonnet meant to be read in the mirror. greathouse’s poetry demands more of language and those who wield it. “I’m still learning not to let a stranger speak / me into a funeral.” Concrete and evocative, Wound from the Mouth of a Wound is a testament to persistence, even when the body is not allowed to thrive. greathouse—elegant, vicious, “a one-girl armageddon” draped in crushed velvet—teaches us that fragility is not synonymous with flaw.
Download or read book Made in China written by Anna Qu and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A young girl forced to work in a Queens sweatshop calls child services on her mother in this powerful debut memoir about labor and self-worth that traces a Chinese immigrant's journey to an American future. As a teen, Anna Qu is sent by her mother to work in her family's garment factory in Queens. At home, she is treated as a maid and suffers punishment for doing her homework at night. Her mother wants to teach her a lesson: she is Chinese, not American, and such is their tough path in their new country. But instead of acquiescing, Qu alerts the Office of Children and Family Services, an act with consequences that impact the rest of her life. Nearly twenty years later, estranged from her mother and working at a Manhattan start-up, Qu requests her OCFS report. When it arrives, key details are wrong. Faced with this false narrative, and on the brink of losing her job as the once-shiny start-up collapses, Qu looks once more at her life's truths, from abandonment to an abusive family to seeking dignity and meaning in work. Traveling from Wenzhou to Xi'an to New York, Made in China is a fierce memoir unafraid to ask thorny questions about trauma and survival in immigrant families, the meaning of work, and the costs of immigration.

Book excerpt: Welcome to “Evolving from the Cocoon” A Memoir of Learning from my Past. In this book I offer accurate portions of my life that has assisted me in the transformation of becoming the best version of me possible. Growing up I was always that quiet-shy kid. I never truly felt comfortable asking questions because I wanted everyone to like me. To avoid conflict and confrontation, I learned to keep to myself. By doing so, I often found myself depressed because I couldn’t figure out why my life seemed to be so abnormal and unfulfilling. Growing older, that one-word question kept finding a way to repeat itself in my head over and over...WHY??? For years that question burned in my heart especially as I entered adulthood. Then it happened! The answer finally hit me! “Your pain may be someone else’s gain!” I thought to myself, “WOW!” The things that troubled me in the past are to be shared with others. My bad decisions and bloopers were indeed blessings. All the mishaps and not so good experiences in my life were to serve as inspiration and encouragement to people like me. I had to gain my voice so that eventually I could be a voice for others. No longer limited by the cocoon, I discovered I can fly high and gracefully like the butterfly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected as One of the Best Books of the 21st Century by The New York Times Set amid the havoc of the War on Drugs, this New York Times bestseller is an "astonishingly intimate" (New York magazine) chronicle of one family’s triumphs and trials in the South Bronx of the 1990s. “Unmatched in depth and power and grace. A profound, achingly beautiful work of narrative nonfiction…The standard-bearer of embedded reportage.” —Matthew Desmond, author of Evicted In her classic bestseller, journalist Adrian Nicole LeBlanc immerses readers in the world of one family with roots in the Bronx, New York. In 1989, LeBlanc approached Jessica, a young mother whose encounter with the carceral state is about to forever change the direction of her life. This meeting redirected LeBlanc’s reporting, taking her past the perennial stories of crime and violence into the community of women and children who bear the brunt of the insidious violence of poverty. Her book bears witness to the teetering highs and devastating lows in the daily lives of Jessica, her family, and her expanding circle of friends. Set at the height of the War on Drugs, Random Family is a love story—an ode to the families that form us and the families we create for ourselves. Charting the tumultuous struggle of hope against deprivation over three generations, LeBlanc slips behind the statistics and comes back with a riveting, haunting, and distinctly American true story.

Book Synopsis Lest We Forget: How Three Sisters Braved the Partition by : Indira Varma
Download or read book Lest We Forget: How Three Sisters Braved the Partition written by Indira Varma and published by Westland. This book was released on 2023-10-24 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘INDIRA VARMA’S POIGNANT, EVOCATIVE AND MOVING AUTOBIOGRAPHY IS UNPUTDOWNABLE, BECAUSE IT DESCRIBES, SPANNING SEVERAL GENERATIONS, THE EVOLUTION OF THREE SISTERS, BEFORE AND AFTER THE TRAUMA OF PARTITION, AND HOW THEY REBUILD THEIR LIVES, TO ULTIMATELY TRIUMPH.’ — PAVAN K. VARMA ‘India is being divided,’ Didi tried to explain. ‘Like a cookie? Whoever gets the smaller half will be upset,’ I nodded wisely. Indira Varma was six years old when she first heard of the impending partition of India. Soon, it would sweep her and her family up in its wake. They would leave behind in Peshawar a fabulous house and vast lands, their horses and cars, in fact, an entire way of life. A family that had gifted the Peshawar Clock Tower to Queen Victoria would go on to live a life of poverty as homeless refugees in India. Like the millions it affected, for Indira Varma too, the Partition was a scar that would remain, even as the wound healed with the passing of time. In Lest We Forget, Varma lets her memory stretch as far back as it will—to its beginning set against the Partition. She recounts her family’s years as refugees, her life shuttling between cities and towns until she finally settled in Delhi, and her journey to building a successful business in travel. Against all odds, Varma weaves for herself a life rich with poetry, family and friendships. This is the story of one life upturned by the Partition, but it is also an ode to the power of love and that thing called hope. It is, ultimately, both a record of, and a guide to, a life well lived.
Book Synopsis Ethics in a Cocoon by : V. David Schwantes
Download or read book Ethics in a Cocoon written by V. David Schwantes and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2007-09 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cocoon demonstrates, in easy-to-understand language, that ethics is about trust, and happiness. Trust is the essential ingredient to mutally-supportive and durable relationships, focused on reducing life's imperfections. Such relationships are the key to happiness. But we cannot live deep inside protective cocoons and still build trust and relationships. Instead, we must develop all the dimensions of what makes us human--intellectual (truth), spiritual (unity), moral (goodness), and aesthetic (beauty). Above all, we have to know ourselves, and be able to pass the "mirror test" every day. Our most important relationship, after all, being with ourself, and we don't discover our spiritual unity without a Personal Strategic Plan. Nor can we become ethically fit without enthusiasm, equanimity and a commitment to excellence--traits not found in cocoons. Only ethical fitness can help us find the resolution to the fundamental ethical dilemmas we all face--truth versus loyalty, short-term versus long-term, individual versus community, and justice versus mercy. This book suggests we use a variety of lenses to look at the world today--power, wealth, prestige, status. We use the lenses of economics, politics, and technology. We do not use nearly enough the lens of ethics--relationships, happiness, decency, and the golden mean. Once we're ethically fit--the result of continuous practice--we're able to recognize ethical dilemmas, approach them skillfully, and resolve them successfully. This book shows the way to such fitness, which is useful in any context or relationship, personal, local or global. Cocoon is a self-improvement book of the first order, with real-life macro-illustrations of the ethical dilemmas we face in a complex and crowded world in which too many of us pursue the dictates of false gods. It includes over 500 practice questions, and was developed as a textbook in the ethics courses the author taught to seniors at Ramapo College from 2002 th
