Book excerpt: Memory Jars is a perfect gift for graduation! A book about saving your favorite memories and keeping them close forever, from Vera Brosgol, creator of the Caldecott Honor book Leave Me Alone! Freda is devastated when she can’t eat all the delicious blueberries she’s picked. She has to wait a whole year before they’re back, and she doesn’t want to lose them! Then Gran reminds her that they can save blueberries in a jar, as jam. So Freda begins to save all her favorite things. But it turns out that saving everything also means she can’t enjoy anything, and Freda realizes that some things are best saved as memories. Memory Jars playfully encourages children to savor life's ephemeral and enduring moments in funny and engaging ways. An ideal read aloud for those mourning a loved one, for teachers celebrating the end of the school year with students, or any time a child’s “frustrated by a good thing being over too soon.” -Booklist, starred review “A lovably quirky girl takes “preserving” to a whole new level. Add Brosgol’s signature big-eyed characters, a touch of dark humor and a mouthwatering jam recipe, and you’ve got all the ingredients for a sequel." -The New York Times A Booklist Editors' Choice Winner

Book Synopsis Half Sound, Half Philosophy by : Jing Wang
Download or read book Half Sound, Half Philosophy written by Jing Wang and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2021-01-14 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the late 1990s until today, China's sound practice has been developing in an increasingly globalized socio-political-aesthetic milieu, receiving attentions and investments from the art world, music industry and cultural institutes, with nevertheless, its unique acoustic philosophy remaining silent. This book traces the history of sound practice from contemporary Chinese visual art back in the 1980s, to electronic music, which was introduced as a target of critique in the 1950s, to electronic instrument building fever in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and to the origins of both academic and nonacademic electronic and experimental music activities. This expansive tracing of sound in the arts resonates with another goal of this book, to understand sound and its artistic practice through notions informed by Chinese qi-cosmology and qi-philosophy, including notions of resonance, shanshui (mountains-waters), huanghu (elusiveness and evasiveness), and distributed monumentality and anti-monumentality. By turning back to deep history to learn about the meaning and function of sound and listening in ancient China, the book offers a refreshing understanding of the British sinologist Joseph Needham's statement that Chinese acoustics is acoustics of qi. and expands existing conceptualization of sound art and contemporary music at large.

Book Synopsis The Looking Glass by : Michèle Roberts
Download or read book The Looking Glass written by Michèle Roberts and published by Henry Holt and Company. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lushly imagined, sensual novel about memory, desire, and the power of storytelling, from a Booker Prize nominee. Geneviève is an outsider, raised in an orphanage, now living an isolated existence as a maid to the widowed Madame Patin in a small French village. A teller and collector of stories, she is entranced by Madame Patin's oft-told folktales, which mask cunning and doom beneath beauty. As Geneviève grows into a woman, her life becomes both more sensual and more dangerous. She flees her village home, escaping to another word-spinner, a poet who captivates women -- his mother, his mistress, his niece's governess, and, soon, Geneviève. The poet is kind, but he too is a collector of stories -- and sometimes of secrets beyond words. An exquisite, knowing, and irresistible novel, The Looking Glass introduces to an American audience "one of Britian's best novelists" (The Independent on Sunday).
