Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1978 English Verse Satire aims to provide a critical study of the major English verse satirists as well as an account of the historical development of verse satire. Critical accounts are offered of important writers including Donne, Vaughan, Butler, Rochester, Dryden, Oldham, Swift, Pope, Young, Dr. Johnson and Churchill. An account of verse satire commences historically with the Roman satirists and Dr Selden has provided a substantial treatment of Horace and Juvenal as the basis for a study of the evolution of verse satire from the Elizabethan period to the end of the Augustan period. A special feature of the book is the emphasis on tradition, continuity, and innovation. This book is an interesting read for scholars of English literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pliny's Women offers a comprehensive consideration of the many women who appear in the letters of Pliny the Younger. Combining detailed prosopography with close literary analysis, Jacqueline Carlon examines the identities of the women whom Pliny includes and how they and the men with whom they are associated contribute both to this presentation of exemplary Romans and particularly to his own self-promotion. Virtually all of the named women in Pliny's nine-book corpus are considered. They form six distinct groups: those associated with opposition to the principate; the family of Pliny's mentor, Corellius Rufus; his own family members; women involved in testamentary disputes; ideal wives; and women of unseemly character. Detailed analysis of each letter mentioning women includes the identity of its recipient and everyone named within, its disposition within the collection, Pliny's language and style, and its significance to our perception of the changing social fabric of the early principate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifteen essays collected here argue that Roman verse satire should be viewed primarily as an art form, rather than as a social document or a direct expression of social protest. Originally published between 1956 and 1974, they constitute an impressive attempt to free Roman satire from misinterpretations that arose during the romantic era and that continue to plague scholars in the field. The author rejects the proposition that Juvenal and other satirists expressed spontaneous, unadorned anger and that the critic’s best approach is the study of the historical, social, economic and personal circumstances that led to their statement of that anger. This work develops his thesis that Roman satire was designed as a literary form and that the proper stance of the critic is to elucidate its art. Focusing on the dramatic character of the first-person speaker in the satires of Horace, Persius, and Juvenal, the author shows both how the speaker’s role was shaped to suit the purposes of the individual poems and how that role changed over successive collections of satires. Several essays also discuss the ways in which the satirists employed metaphors and similes and used contemporary ethical and rhetorical themes. Originally published in 1982. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press.
