Book excerpt: The world is witnessing a rapid growth in wind and other renewable based electricity generation due to environmental concerns associated with electricity generation from the conventional sources. Wind power behaves quite differently than conventional electric power generating units due to its intermittent and diffuse nature. System planners and operators face the variability and uncertainty of wind power availability, and therefore, encounter considerable challenges in making decisions to maintain the adequacy and security of wind integrated power systems. This volume intends to bring out the original research work of researchers from academia and industry in understanding, quantifying and managing the risks associated with the uncertainty in wind variability in order to plan and operate a modern power system integrated with a significant proportion of wind power generation with an acceptable level of reliability. Accurate modeling of wind power variability and proper incorporation of the models in reliability and risk evaluation is very important for the planning and operation of electric power systems, and will play a crucial role in defining the requirement of various types of resources and services, such as storage and ancillary services in power systems.

This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The large service interruptions of power supply in the transmission system have significant impact on modern society. The aim of the power system engineers is to prevent and mitigate such events with optimal decisions in design, planning, operation and maintenance. Due to the rapid growth in the power demand and competitive power market scenario, the transmission and distribution systems are frequently being operated under heavily loaded conditions. This tends to make failure of components more frequent in the power system necessitating large downtime to repair or replace the equipment. A majority of the service interruptions are happening due to lack of proper planning and operation of power system. Therefore, complete reliability assessment in generation, transmission and distribution systems is needed at the planning stage. The reliability assessment in smart grids is very much beneficial to the power operator and reduces the risk of grid failure due to failure of major components in power systems. This chapter is confined to composite power system reliability assessment. The composite power system combines both the generation and transmission systems' adequacy. The generation system in the composite power system includes both conventional and renewable sources. The composite power system reliability assessment is quite difficult due to the large number of equipment, interconnected network topology and uncertainties in generation capacity. The reliability assessment concentrates mainly on the use of probabilistic states of components in generation and transmission systems to evaluate the overall reliability. This analysis will result in a cost-effective system configuration to provide continuous power supply to the consumers at reasonable cost. The reliability level of the system is measured by the defined indices. One of these indices is the probability of average power availability at load bus. This reliability assessment mainly focuses on development of methods to evaluate the probability of average power availability at load buses for a specified system configuration. This chapter discusses the two main techniques called node elimination method and modified minimal cut set method.

Book excerpt: Electric power systems throughout the world are undergoing considerable changes due to the converging forces of deregulation, technological revolution and evolving customer expectations. Quantitative reliability evaluation plays an important role in the development, design and operation of composite generation and transmission or bulk power systems. This thesis presents research conducted on the development and examination of concepts, techniques and pertinent factors in the reliability evaluation of composite power systems using direct analytical and equivalent analytical approaches. A major difficulty in composite system reliability evaluation using analytical methods is the long computation times required to investigate the extremely large number of possible system outage events in an actual composite system. Only the credible system states are usually investigated. The credible system states are those that make significant contributions to the reliability indices and are usually determined by considering outages up to a certain level. The computation time increases rapidly with increase in system size and the defined outage level. The obtained adequacy indices can often be inaccurate due to limited depth of analysis. Computation times can be significantly reduced when the unchanging portion of a system can be replaced by a reduced equivalent reliability model. Equivalents can prove very useful in the evaluation of large systems where sensitivity studies are to be performed on a portion of the system or when the system is to be interconnected to a further system, which is to be studied in detail. Reliability equivalent concepts also have many other applications in composite system evaluation. This thesis illustrates the foundations, evaluation procedures, pertinent factors, reliability indices and computer program design concepts associated with composite system evaluation using the analytical approach. The thesis presents three advanced algorithms which effectiv.
