Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Year One: A Page of the French Revolution To do so I have gone entirely to French writ ers and, above all, to French writers of the period; While making use principally, and wher ever it has been possible, of the records left he hind by those Who had lain in deadly peril and who, after having escaped by the mercy of heaven, wrote careful memoirs and diaries of their trials and tribulations. Every private family of any note in France is full of such records as these, to say nothing of the vast stores of literature on the subject with which the State libraries and museums are filled; and to more than one French family I am indebted not only for a sight of some of these treasures but, also, for many extracts willingly made and forwarded to me. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the French Revolution, Vol. 3 of 5 An order of arrest was issued by the commune against the two ministers Lebrun and Clavieres, dismissed after the 2nd of June. Lebrun found means to evade it. The same measure was taken against Roland, who had been removed from office on the 21st of January, and begged in vain to be permitted to render his accounts. He escaped the search made for him by the commune, and concealed himself at Rouen. Madame Roland, against whom also proceedings were instituted, had no other anxiety than that of favouring the escape of her husband; then, committing her daughter to the care of a trusty friend, she surrendered with noble indifference to the committee of her section, and was thrown into prison with a multitude of other victims of the 31st of May. Great was the joy at the Jacobins. Its members congratulated themselves on the energy of the people, on their late admirable conduct, and on the removal of all those obstacles which the right side had not ceased to oppose to the progress of the Revolution. According to the custom after all great events, they agreed upon the manner in which the last insurrection should be represented. "The people," said Robespierre, "have confounded all their calumniators by their conduct. Eighty thousand men have been under arms for nearly a week, yet no property has been violated, not a drop of blood has been spilled, and they have thus proved whether it was their aim, as it has been alleged, to profit by the disorder for the commission of murder and plunder. Their insurrection was spontaneous, because it was the effect of the general conviction; and the Mountain itself, weak and astonished at this movement, has proved that it did not concur to produce it. Thus this insurrection has been wholly moral and wholly popular." This was at once giving a favourable colour to the insurrection, addressing an indirect censure to the Mountain, which had shown some hesitation on the 2nd of June, repelling the charge of conspiracy preferred against the leaders of the left side, and agreeably flattering the popular party, which had behaved so well and done every thing of itself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eve of the French Revolution The larger number of people, who had been living quietly in the existing order, were amused and interested. The attacks of the Philosophers seemed to them just in many cases, the reasoning conclusive. But in their hearts they could not believe in the reality and importance of the assault. Some of those most interested in keeping the world as it was, honestly or frivolously joined in the cry for reform and for destruction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edmee: A Tale of the French Revolution The king and queen were put to death, and so were hundreds, nay thousands, of the nobles and gentry of the country. For the leaders of the Revolution, seeing how badly things had gone under a éaa' government, foolishly thought, like children escaping from the rule of too harsh a schoolmaster, that the only way to be truly free and happy was to have no regular government at all, but for every one to do just what he pleased, with no regard for others, no respect for the eternal laws of right and wrong - a state of things which could not but become the worst of tyrannies, for it was the tyranny of the many instead of the few. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revolutionary Spirit Preceding the French Revolution Philosophers, would have come to mu revolutionary movement which had b since the beginning of the century. Th this lay in the just and profound griefs cent. Of the population, comprising all elements, from the agricultural peasants and the men of letters and science, aga' which they were crushed, or annoyed, 1217 turned. But the surface-current was official defenders of the Ancien Regime t the Court, the Church, the Parliaments, Jesuits, acting in the interests of the Papacy, who, in the first half of the e effectually undermined all respect for civil or religious, and justified the worst be said by the Philosopncs later on. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French Revolution a Short History The object of this book is similar to that with which, a few years ago, I wrote a short biography of Napoleon. The main outlines of the Revolution, the proportion and relation of things, tend to become obscured under the accumulation of historical detail that is now proceeding. This is an attempt, therefore, to disentangle from the mass of details the shape, the movement, the significance of this great historical cataclysm. To keep the outline clear I have deliberately avoided mentioning the names of many subordinate actors; thinking that if nothing essential was connected with them the mention of their names would only tend to confuse matters. Similarly with incidents, I have omitted a few, such as the troubles at Avignon, and changed the emphasis on others, judging freely their importance and not following the footsteps of my predecessors, as in the case of the capture of the Bastille, the importance of which was vastly exaggerated by early writers on the subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French Revolution, Vol. 1 This second part of "Les Origines de la France Contemporaine" will consist of two volumes. - Popular insurrections and the laws of the Constituent Assembly end in destroying all government in France; this forms the subject of the present volume. - A party arises around an extreme doctrine, gets possession of the power, and exercises it in conformity with that doctrine; this will form the subject of the second volume. A third volume would be required to criticize authorities. For this I have no room, and I merely state the rule that I have observed. The most trustworthy testimony is that of the eyewitness, especially when this witness is an honourable, attentive, and intelligent man, writing on the spot, at the moment, and under the dictation of the facts themselves - if it is manifest that his sole object is to preserve or furnish information, if his work is not a piece of polemics planned for the needs of a cause, or a passage of eloquence arranged for popular effect, but a legal deposition, a secret report, a confidential dispatch, a private letter, or a personal memento. The nearer a document approaches this type, the more it merits confidence, and supplies superior materials. - I have found many of this character in the national archives, principally in the manuscript correspondence of ministers, intendants, sub-delegates, magistrates, and other functionaries; of military commanders, officers in the army, and gendarmerie; of royal commissioners, and of the Assembly; of administrators of departments, districts, and municipalities, besides persons in private life who address the King, the National Assembly, or the ministry. Among these are men of every rank, profession, education, and party. They are distributed by hundreds and thousands over the whole surface of the territory.
