I have included all the pictures that I can find, nearly all of them from old postcards from the 1900 to 1914 period when thankfully the village or town station was one of the features the local postcard photographer always tried to include. Without them many of these lines would have disappeared into the mists of time....a lot of them closed beyond living memory and traces on the ground are few. Many of them simply ran along the verge of a convenient road so trying to trace the route is all but impossible, especially if road improvements have taken place since the line closed. The postcards are a lifeline, our window into a vanished age when the speed of a metre gauge train was as fast as most people needed to travel.

Colonial workers were subjects of an ostensibly democratic nation whose motto read “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity,” but liberal ideals were savaged by a cruelly indifferent administrative state. African workers were forcibly conscripted and separated from their families, and subjected to hellish conditions as they hacked their way through dense tropical foliage—a “forest of no joy”; excavated by hand thousands of tons of earth in order to lay down track; blasted their way through rock to construct tunnels; or risked their lives building bridges over otherwise impassable rivers. In the process, they suffered disease, malnutrition, and rampant physical abuse, likely resulting in at least 20,000 deaths.
