Book excerpt: Bal Folk was created from a selection tunes published as Massif Central Volumes 1 and 2. It has been completely revised and errors found in the original have been corrected. Copyright tunes had to be removed but a number of original compositions by Trevor Upham and Chris Shaw have been added. Trevor and Chris live in England but write tunes in the central French style. Trevor lived for many years in France and was very involved with the folk dance scene there, he writes some superb tunes which deserve to be better known. This book will be of interest to anyone who enjoys playing French music, or playing for French dancing. The tunes are suitable for melodeon, fiddle and accordion and many will fit within the range of bagpipes and hurdy gurdy. It contains the usual mix of mazurkas, valses, scottisches, two and three time bourrees, and polkas that are encountered at a Bal Folk in France. The majority of the tunes in this book come from the centre of France, the Berry, Bourbonnais and Auvergne regions, where there is a strong tradition of hurdy gurdy and bagpipe music. In addition, there are a few examples of tunes for other dances that one can occasionally encounter, for example the five time waltz from Alsace. It should not be seen as an academic work, but a useful source of good tunes. Also included are a number of tunes written in the French style by Trevor Upham and Chris Shaw, two musicians playing French music in England. In France the usual tuning used for a two row melodeon is C/G, whilst in England we prefer G/D. The melodeon in C/G tuning fits very well with the Auvergne tuned hurdy gurdy and bagpipes in C, when playing in C and G major. This is an instrument combination often used in France. It is for this reason that a number of tunes are written in C, however they can

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dances of the French Pyrenees express a multitude of influences in their colourful variety. At the eastern end the French side is influenced by Spanish Catalonia, at the western end the famous Basque dances show some slight influence from their Spanish-Basque brothers; even in the centre, under the high and inaccessible peaks, dances are coloured by influence from across the frontier, so that everywhere traditions are Pyrenean rather than regional or local. Violet Alford, author of this book and editor of the series, knew the Pyrenees as few other foreigners do. She was a dancer herself, both at home and with the people whose countries she visited. Readers of her books The Traditional Dance (with Rodney Gallop) and Pyrenean Festivals, and of the many articles she wrote on folk-lore and folk dance, will recognise her lively and authoritative style. Miss Alford here selected five typical dances for fuller description, with music and step-notation. Four plates in colour show the correct costumes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This overview of folk dancing in the United States showcases an important historical movement and explains how folk dance communities evolved to fulfill the needs of specific groups of people over time. While the general term "folk dance" encompasses a surprising variety of specific dances, there are three major recreational communities or forms: international folk dance, modern western square dance, and contra dance. Throughout the last century, millions of people have enjoyed folk dancing as an educational and recreational activity, regardless of the particular style. Folk Dancing explains the reasons for the folk dance movement that exploded in Europe and North America in the late 19th century. It describes the clubs, camps, festivals, and communities that sprang up, and examines the culture of the movement—the music, key individuals and events, types of clothing, and influences of technologies and popular culture. The book contains authoritative, original information gleaned from the author's own research conducted with hundreds of folk dance enthusiasts across America.

Book excerpt: It was indeed an adventure for those pioneers in France who struggled for the recognition of the new-born dance of the twentieth century - from the free dance of Isadora Duncan, through the absolute dance of Mary Wigman, to the modern dance of Martha Graham. Jacqueline Robinson has lived at the heart of this adventure, sharing the aspirations of a whole generation who often suffered from the lack of understanding of an establishment more inclined towards classical ballet. From the breaking of the soil in the twenties, to the flowering in the sixties, here is a chronicle of the changing landscape of French dance. Here is the story of those men and women, ploughmen and poets, rebels and visionaries - the recollection of those events that made it possible for dance as an art form in Western countries to rise again as a fundamental expression of the human spirit.
