Book excerpt: Fremont F. Ellis, a famous landscape painter, was born in Virginia City, Montana in 1897. His father was a nomadic dentist and theater operator who traveled from the bustling gold towns of the American West to the metropolitan cities of the east. Ellis began painting at about twelve years of age although he had little art instruction or formal education of any kind. He had his first art showing in El Paso, Texas while still in his teens and was immediately praised for his work. However, his father thought he should have a profession along with his art work, so he studied optometry and had his own practice. But he wasn't happy with the life of a businessman, and after visiting friends in Santa Fe, New Mexico, he decided to make his home there and pursue his art work seriously. In 1921, Ellis joined with four other young painters in Santa Fe-Josef Bakos, Walter Mruk, Will Shuster, and Willard Nash-and together they founded an art society called "Los Cinco Pintores." They called themselves modern artists who encouraged freedom of expression and they made a definite impression on the art movement in Santa Fe. The group disbanded in 1926, but Ellis continued painting until his death in 1985. He showed his work actively in Santa Fe and Los Angeles, his unique impressionistic style earning him a large and dedicated following. His work is in many museum collections including the Museum of New Mexico, the El Paso Museum, the Art Institute in Lubbock, Texas, and the Stark Museum in Orange, Texas. Barbara Spencer Foster is a third generation native New Mexican. She grew up in the shadows of the Manzano Mountains where her ancestors had settled in the 1800s. She is the author of "Girl of the Manzanos," "Pecos Queen," "Fire in the Bosque," and "Santa Fe Woman," all from Sunstone Press.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artists and filmmakers in the early twentieth century reshaped our vision of the American West. In particular, the Taos Society of Artists and the California-based artist Maynard Dixon departed from the legendary depiction of the “Wild West” and fostered new images, or brands, for western art. This volume, illustrated with more than 150 images, examines select paintings and films to demonstrate how these artists both enhanced and contradicted earlier representations of the West. Prior to this period, American art tended to portray the West as a wild frontier with untamed lands and peoples. Renowned artists such as Henry Farny and Frederic Remington set their work in the past, invoking an environment immersed in conflict and violence. This trademark perspective began to change, however, when artists enamored with the Southwest stamped a new imprint on their paintings. The contributors to this volume illuminate the complex ways in which early-twentieth-century artists, as well as filmmakers, evoked a southwestern environment not just suspended in time but also permanent rather than transient. Yet, as the authors also reveal, these artists were not entirely immune to the siren call of the vanishing West, and their portrayal of peaceful yet “exotic” Native Americans was an expansion rather than a dismissal of earlier tropes. Both brands cast a romantic spell on the West, and both have been seared into public consciousness. Branding the American West is published in association with the Brigham Young University Museum of Art, Provo, Utah, and the Stark Museum of Art, Orange, Texas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richly illustrated, Artists of the Canyons and Caminos traces the lives and work of painters who settled in Santa Fe in the early years of the twentieth century. Under their influence, Santa Fe grew from a dusty high-desert town with no paved streets or automobiles to a thriving community. Artists of the Canyons and Caminos features a new foreword by publisher Gibbs M. Smith, and reveals little-known facts and profiles of the personalities who catalyzed this transformation. Above all, it illuminates their common bond: an enduring love for the beauty of the land that called to them in the first place. Some places in the world have a particular atmosphere, a sense of romance, which makes them "good places to paint." Santa Fe, New Mexico-with its clean, sharp air; its startlingly bright colors; its sculptured mesas and mountains-is one of these places. Artists of the Canyons and Caminos includes: A brief chronology of Santa Fe from its inauguration as a state capital housing the oldest public building in the United States (Palace of the Governors); to the first annual exhibition of the Cinco Pintores in 1921, when of the town's population of 7,000, 15 were resident artists; to the opening of the Institute of American Indian Arts in 1962. Descriptions of the broad spectrum of representational styles that flourished there, from romance to super-realism. Major patrons of the arts: railroads, scientists, territorial senators, lawyers, well-to-do retirees. The artists' missions: admiration for the local Indians and their arts, encouragement of young artists of all nationalities, solidarity to prevent Santa Fe from being overly Americanized.

During the Civil Wr, when Maranda Simmons boldy retrieved her stolen horses from a Union camp, soldiers believed she was a haint. When a cast-iron stove fell of Grace Sollis's baby, she gained superhuman strength, picked up the stove to free the baby and then ran circles around the log cabin until she came to her senses. After patiently waiting years for her promised dream house, Elise Quigley and her five children tore down their three-room shack and moved into the chicken house after Mr. Quigley left for work. Join author Cynthia Carroll, a descendant of six generations of Ozark natives, as she details the legends and lore of the Arkansas Ozarks." from the back cover
