Book excerpt: This comprehensive book, written by an experienced railway modeller, demonstrates how, with a little patience, you can produce accurate and realistic models of goods trains, sheds and yards. It presents detailed step-by-step projects and covers basic card-kit building, 'kit bashing' and scratch building. Written in an easily understandable style, this fascinating work is aimed at all those railway modellers who wish to authentically replicate the way goods were moved and handled on Britain's railways during the steam era. It covers the simple tools and materials that are required and is packed with information about steam-era goods workings and how to recreate them on a layout. It shows the reader how a typical goods yard operated and how it was constructed, and demonstrates how to detail, improve, modify and achieve the best results from card kits. It also examines the growing appeal of 'download' kits and shows the modeller how to improve the appearance and reliability of goods rolling stock. With many money-saving suggestions, this essential guide to transforming shiny shop-bought models and kits into convincing representations of the real thing will be invaluable to all railway modellers. Book Synopsis The Railway Goods Shed and Warehouse in England by : John Minnis
Download or read book The Railway Goods Shed and Warehouse in England written by John Minnis and published by English Heritage. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although goods traffic accounted in many cases for a higher proportion of railway companies’ revenue than passengers, the buildings associated with it have received very little attention in comparison to their passenger counterparts. They once played as important a role in distribution as the ‘big sheds’ near motorway junctions do today. The book shows how the basic design of goods sheds evolved early in the history of railways, and how the form of goods sheds reflected the function they performed. Although goods sheds largely functioned in the same way, there was considerable scope for variety of architectural expression in their external design. The book brings out how they varied considerably in size from small timber huts to the massive warehouses seen in major cities. It also looks at how many railway companies developed standard designs for these buildings towards the end of the 19th century and at how traditional materials such as timber, brick and stone gave way to steel and concrete in the 20th This building type is subject to a high level of threat with development pressure in urban and suburban areas for both car parking and housing having already accounted for the demise of many of these buildings. Despite this, some 600 have been identified as still extant and the book will, for the first time, provide a comprehensive gazetteer of the surviving examples.
Book Synopsis Train Shunting and Marshalling for the Modeller by : Bob Essery
Download or read book Train Shunting and Marshalling for the Modeller written by Bob Essery and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a firm believer in 'realism in miniature' the author knows that over the past 20 years there has been a phenomenal increase in the physical standards of layouts built and exhibited; the quality of proprietary locomotives and rolling stock has improved immeasurably as have the signalling and scenery. What is still lacking, however, is the knowledge as to how the railways actually operated and, in an era when DCC makes the realistic operation of model railways all the more practical (along with the hazards associated with the industry), this leads to all sorts of schoolboy howlers perpetrated upon the viewing public at model railway shows. Since the publication of 'Railway Operation for the Modeller' in 2003, there has been a growing awareness of the importance of replicating correct operating procedure and this volume is the fourth volume designed to build upon the success of that original book. Many model railways, unless recreating an exact replica, often add more complexity to the scene - in terms of over-large locomotive sheds and goods yards - in order to give variety of operation and this volume is designed to provide the modeller with a comprehensive guide to working practices when shunting and marshalling passenger or freight trains and the handling of locomotive sheds. The book will include descriptive text allied 200 mono and colour illustrations. Individual chapters will include the evolution of shunting, the men and equipment, marshalling passenger trains, types of locomotive used arrangements of locomotive shed and shed operation. This title has great appeal to both modellers and railway enthusiasts.
Book Synopsis Pilentum Television Filmography by : Markus Lenz

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many years ago in Germany, Pilentum Television was born when the author Markus Lenz was trying to make photos and videos of miniature cars in macro photography mode. Because toy cars did not move, Markus was looking for other objects to film. Finally, he found model trains. It is like a challenge to make videos in macro photography mode of model trains in action. In the course of time a preference has emerged to film model railway layouts and model railroad displays to create entertaining, high-quality video documentations. Today, Pilentum Television is one of the leading video networks for toy trains, model trains, model railroading and railway modelling. Pilentum Television presents high-quality documentaries about the wonderful miniature world of model trains. Our modern world offers an unbelievable number of leisure activities, such as video games, railway simulations on the computer and much more. Therefore, such a wonderful hobby as rail modeling should not be forgotten. Model railroading is educationally valuable, and railway modelling promotes the creativity of children. Finally, model trains are a great hobby for adults. Actually, Pilentum Television offers more than 350 videos on YouTube, Dailymotion and Amazon Prime Video, for free. In order to keep track of all video films, this e-book was created. It is a filmography containing descriptions and additional information about Pilentum Television’s movies.
Download or read book Goods Trains written by Tim Bryan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-05-28 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever watched wagon after wagon of a goods train thunder past and wondered where it is heading, what it is carrying, and how it works its way between the passenger services? While goods services now tend to be shrouded in anonymity, in past times they were celebrated, prominently advertised, and in many cases were the raisons d'être for a rail route. Throughout the nineteenth and much of the twentieth century, goods trains were the lifeblood of the nation, transporting precious raw materials, construction and industrial items, and fresh produce from coastal areas and farms into the centres of bustling cities. This informative illustrated history shows how rail freight has been carried since Victorian times, and how systems have been organized, from the train itself to the sidings, railway clearing houses, goods sheds and final destinations – whether villages, towns, cities, factories or docks. It also examines the basic rolling stock of these trains, from the humble coal wagon to today's hi-tech containers.

Book Synopsis Making Your N Gauge Railway More Realistic by : Richard Middleton
Download or read book Making Your N Gauge Railway More Realistic written by Richard Middleton and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2024-09-30 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Railway modelling offers a unique opportunity for the modeller to construct and operate an authentic simulation of the real thing. When one creates a model railway, one should strive to embed the sense of purpose from the real railway into their model. Simply moving trains around aimlessly around a layout may be enjoyable, but it doesnt reflect how the real railway operates. There is much focus on absolute accuracy with regards to locomotives and rolling stock but far fewer modellers in general pay attention to prototypical accuracy and replicating authentic railway operations in miniature. Operating your layout in a realistic fashion is not only more authentic, but it can also be an enjoyable pastime in its own right. It gives purpose to the movement of every train on the layout and, if it involves co-operation between more than one operator, involves teamwork and good communication which can be immensely satisfying. Finally, realistic operation is supported by many other factors, a sense of time and setting, sensible track layout, correct placement of signals, the proper formation of trains, realistic civil engineering, and layout clutter. These all add to the overall atmosphere and setting of a real or fictional railway, tying it to a time and place, and making the whole ensemble more authentic and thus making the whole experience feel more real. This book is intended to help those with an interest in the BR Blue (TOPS) and Sectorisation eras present their layout in a realistic manner using easy-to-understand sketches and drawings, previously unpublished period photographs and source material from the era. This book will give the reader ideas to help their N Gauge model railway come to life.
