Book excerpt: Drawing on critical race theory, critical race feminism, critical multicultural analysis, and intertextuality this book examines how slavery is represented in contemporary children’s picture books. Through analysis of recently published picture books about slavery, Rogers discusses how these books engage with and respond to the historiography of the institution of slavery. Exploring how contemporary writers and illustrators have represented the institution of slavery, Rogers presents a critical and responsible approach for reading and using picture books in K-12 classrooms and demonstrates how these picture books about slavery continue to perform important cultural work.

Book excerpt: They say what happens in heaven also happens on earth, and vice-versa, and so on earth as it is in heaven and so forth, for as much as we often like to paraphrase in saying, that such above is also such below, and so below is also such above, as do we often recognise along with real worldly events, that as we try to distinguish whether it is life that imitates art, or indeed, whether it is art that imitates life that as much as we have learnt to mimicry, or to interpret our portrayal of the world as we know it and experience it, then surely we must acknowledge that life is not forever and yet still we believe that it shall become so. As it is only by God's grace that we have forever held this humble belief in our minds even though it may have dampened the amusement of our senses, and yet still it has also allowed us to transcend towards the seeking such knowledge, if only to acquire the wisdom in becoming all knowing. For as much we may search and seek out for a heaven upon the earth still we often look towards the sky, along with the faith and the hope that we may come to discover such a place of awesome reverence and wonder, which has always been attributed with many a name and many a title, some of which I have hastened to mention here i.e. Paradise, Nirvana Valhalla Elysium and Tiandao, amongst with many more, and yet still we believe this heaven to be the spiritual abode and resting place of our heavenly souls. As H.O.M.E – (Heaven Offers Many Examples) and yet still I can only contend to think and to believe that such a heavenly realm, which has always found itself to be such a prominent and worthy place within our hearts, must also endeavour to be one that we are inspired to compose and to write about, and must also be one that we are ready to carve and to paint about, and must also be one that we ready to build and to strive about if only to nurture as we plant and as we grow upon reflection, whilst striving towards this heaven ideal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recommended by The New York Times, The Washington Post, Book Riot and Autostraddle Nominated for a 2019 NAACP Image Award, a groundbreaking collection of profiles of African American women leaders in the twentieth-century fight for civil rights During the Civil Rights Movement, African American women did not stand on ceremony; they simply did the work that needed to be done. Yet despite their significant contributions at all levels of the movement, they remain mostly invisible to the larger public. Beyond Rosa Parks and Coretta Scott King, most Americans would be hard-pressed to name other leaders at the community, local, and national levels. In Lighting the Fires of Freedom Janet Dewart Bell shines a light on women's all-too-often overlooked achievements in the Movement. Through wide-ranging conversations with nine women, several now in their nineties with decades of untold stories, we hear what ignited and fueled their activism, as Bell vividly captures their inspiring voices. Lighting the Fires of Freedom offers these deeply personal and intimate accounts of extraordinary struggles for justice that resulted in profound social change, stories that are vital and relevant today. A vital document for understanding the Civil Rights Movement, Lighting the Fires of Freedom is an enduring testament to the vitality of women's leadership during one of the most dramatic periods of American history.

In this stirring and timely collection of stories, essays, poems, and letters, Jarvis Jay Masters explores the meaning of true freedom on his road to inner peace through Buddhist practice. He reveals his life as a young African American man surrounded by violence, his entanglement in the criminal justice system, and—following an encounter with Tibetan Buddhist teacher Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche—an unfolding commitment to nonviolence and peacemaking. At turns joyful, heartbreaking, frightening, and soaring with profound insight, Masters’s story offers a vision of hope and the possibility of freedom in even the darkest of times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freedom on My Mind reveals the richly diverse and complex experience of black people in America in their own words, from the Colonial era of Benjamin Banneker to the present world of Kweisi Mfume and Clarence Thomas. Personal correspondence, excerpts from slave narratives and autobiographies, leaflets, significant addresses and speeches, oral histories and interviews, political manifestos, and important statements of black institutions and organizations are brought together to form a volume that testifies to the boundless creative potential of black Americans in indefatigable pursuit of the dream of freedom. Arranged thematically, the selections illustrate the politics of resistance—as reflected through gender and sexuality, kinship and community, work and leisure, faith and spirituality. They also highlight the contributions of women to black identity, history, and consciousness, and offer excerpts from the work of some of the finest stylists in the African American canon. A general introduction as well as short introductions and bibliographies for each document further enhance the usefulness of the book for students and researchers.
