Book Synopsis Religious Controversy in British India by : Kenneth W. Jones
Download or read book Religious Controversy in British India written by Kenneth W. Jones and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1992-01-03 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book opens the doors to a social and cultural sphere beyond the limited world of the English-speaking elite and provides the basis for an understanding of religious controversy and internal reform. It explores the dynamics of religious interaction and conflict that points toward later developments of communalism and religious separatism still plaguing the subcontinent. Religious Controversy in British India reveals a world expressed in South Asian dialects that has been closed to many scholars and students of the subcontinent. During the nineteenth century polemical religious literature and those who wrote it mobilized groups and led them back to the "fundamentals." Sacred texts supporting movements were translated and made available in inexpensive editions. Even texts from the well established oral tradition were put into print. This process was often initiated in response to Christian missionary activity, a response that ultimately expanded to include other religions. In this book, scholars examine the writings of Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs responsible for significant changes within different communities and for a heightened sense of boundary-defining identity.

Book Synopsis 1857 War of Independence Or Clash of Civilizations? by : Salahuddin Malik
Download or read book 1857 War of Independence Or Clash of Civilizations? written by Salahuddin Malik and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2008 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study offers an in-depth perspective into the British psyche at the height of Victorian England by delving into the serious debates which ensued in the wake of the revolt in India. The result is analytical reflections on British imperial, evangelical, economic, political, military, and moral thinking. The book destroys a number of myths which had been carefully nurtured in Britain about the popular acceptance of British rule in India. Furthermore, it opens a new vista in the study of the Indian 'mutiny'. To date it has been viewed as everything except a Muslim rebellion, while the reports from the field indicated that this was its true nature, first and last. The book also opens a new chapter on the degree to which Christian evangelism had taken hold of the British imperial effort in India, and how it used the government machinery to expand and advance missionary work in the South Asian colony. It also reveals the degree to which Christians had become intolerant of other faiths."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Synopsis Indian Nationalists and the World Proletariat by : Horst Krüger
Download or read book Indian Nationalists and the World Proletariat written by Horst Krüger and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This translation of Horst Krger's book in German brings to the English reading public a pioneer work on the relationship between the Indian National Movement and the World Working-Class Movement down to the outbreak of World War I. It is an important fact that the emergence of the Second International and the Indian National Congress were practically simultaneous and Krger studied in detail how the two streams came together. His detailed work deals frankly with the vision and the limitations on both sides. This is an area to which both historians of India's freedom struggle and of general labour history have not paid adequate attention, though the early Indian proximity to socialist thought and the importance of India for the consciences of early European socialists are important matters in their own right.
