Book Synopsis Freedom from Liberation by : Gerard Aching
Download or read book Freedom from Liberation written by Gerard Aching and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-07 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Delves into the life and work of Juan Francisco Manzano, the enslaved Cuban poet and author of Spanish America’s only known slave narrative . . . Valuable.” —Choice By exploring the complexities of enslavement in the autobiography of Cuban slave-poet Juan Francisco Manzano (1797–1854), Gerard Aching complicates the universally recognized assumption that a slave’s foremost desire is to be freed from bondage. As the only slave narrative in Spanish that has surfaced to date, Manzano’s autobiography details the daily grind of the vast majority of slaves who sought relief from the burden of living under slavery. Aching combines historical narrative and literary criticism to take the reader beyond Manzano’s text to examine the motivations behind anticolonial and antislavery activism in pre-revolution Cuba, when Cuba’s Creole bourgeoisie sought their own form of freedom from the colonial arm of Spain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume focuses on what Hannah Arendt famously called “the raison d’être of politics”: freedom. The unique collection of essays clarifies her flagship idea of political freedom in relation to other key Arendtian themes such as liberation, revolution, civil disobedience, and the right to have rights. In addressing these, contributors to this volume juxtapose Arendt with a number of thinkers from Isaiah Berlin, John Rawls and Philip Pettit to Karl Marx, Frantz Fanon and Geoffroy de Lagasnerie. They also consider the continuing relevance of Arendt’s work to some of the most dramatic events in recent years, including the current global refugee crisis, the Arab uprisings of the 2010s, and the ongoing crisis of liberal democracy in the West and beyond. Contributors include Keith Breen, Joan Cocks, Tal Correm, Christian J. Emden, Patrick Hayden, Kei Hiruta, Anthony F. Lang Jr., Shmuel Lederman, Miriam Leonard, Natasha Saunders, William Smith, and Shiyu Zhang.

Download or read book Freedom, Inc. written by BRIAN M. CARNEY and published by . This book was released on 2016-01-26 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corporate liberation is not a strategy. It is a business philosophy that leaders around the world are using to radically transform their organizations. Liberating leaders believe that a workplace based on respect and freedom is a more natural environment than one based on mistrust and control. So they acted to align their organizations with these beliefs: They liberated people's initiative and potential and with it, unshackled their companies' performance. A lot has happened since Freedom, Inc. first appeared in 2009. The book itself has been translated to six other languages. In France, it won the best business book award and was the No.1 business/management bestseller on Amazon.fr seven months in a row. More importantly, it has inspired hundreds of leaders to launch their own corporate liberation. The French daily Le Monde has heralded the start of a corporate liberation movement in France. Since then, the phenomenon has made the cover of leading periodicals, been shown on the evening news of major European TV chains, and been the subject of a 90-minute TV documentary that broke all the records for popularity. Most liberated companies have been small and medium size-though some have grown tremendously since. Yet increasingly, multinationals such as Michelin or Decathlon-operating in Europe, America and Asia-are joining the corporate liberation movement that pioneers such as W.L. Gore and USAA began. Corporate liberation has no frontiers, geographical or industrial. Vineet Nayar has liberated an Indian high-tech giant and David Marquet, a U.S. nuclear submarine. Leaders of organizations of all sizes and types are shedding their hierarchies and bureaucracies and transforming them into respect- and freedom-based workplaces. Every morning their employees go to work, but many prefer to say they go to have fun-pursuing a common dream using their own initiative.
Book Synopsis Freedom and Discipleship by : Daniel S. Schipani
Download or read book Freedom and Discipleship written by Daniel S. Schipani and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-12-29 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An appraisal of liberation theology from the Anabaptist-Mennonite perspective, Freedom and Discipleship brings together essays by prominent theologians of that tradition and responses by Protestant liberation theologians. Emerging from differing ethnic, socio-cultural, and denominational backgrounds, the contributors seek to promote an inter-Christian dialogue. This dialogue, in turn, locates foundations for both building and equipping the ecclesial community for mission, especially the witness of peace and justice. It spurs modern descendants of both traditions to reflect on their own radical roots, while simultaneously raising critical questions on such topics as violence and nonviolence. Freedom and Discipleship offers a unique assessment of liberation theology from the perspective of the “Radical Reformation”—that stream of Protestantism which has understood the discipleship of Jesus to imply commitments to peace and to justice. The contributors address the myriad dimensions of liberation theology—including hermeneutical, ecclesiological, christological, ethical, and eschatological concerns. In Part I, "Perspectives on Liberation Theology," essays evaluate liberation theology at various points and in different ways. Part II, "Dialogical Interface and Implications," reflects the ongoing conversation in a dialectical and dynamic fashion. In bringing together liberation theology and the Anabaptist perspective, Freedom and Discipleship makes a significant contribution to the engagement of two Christian traditions.

Book Synopsis Life in Freedom by : Michael Amaladoss
Download or read book Life in Freedom written by Michael Amaladoss and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-04-17 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Life in Freedom Michael Amaladoss analyzes the many rich and complex strands of Asian religious thought on the notion and nature of the path toward liberation. As he shows, Asian "liberation theology" departs significantly from the Latin American model, with which it is commonly compared. Rather than put primary emphasis on economic issues, Asian cultures give much greater priority to the role of religion in the composition of a healthy society. In Part One Amaladoss discusses current liberation movements and thought in Korea, the Philippines, and India. In two other chapters, he shows also that the awakening of women is integral to the search for human freedom and development and the growing importance sound ecological policies in any valid approach to liberation in Asia. In Part Two Amaladoss discusses non-Christian approaches to human liberation and freedom, showing how the lives and thought of influential figures of other faiths have given distinctive shape to Asian approaches to liberation. Buddhists such as Thich Nhat Hanh and Hindus such as Mahatma Gandhi and E.V. Ramaswamy show that hostility to religion is remote from the most characteristic Asian liberation movements. Gandhi's entire politics was rooted in the notion that "to attain Truth or to realize God is the goal of human life." But God [for Gandhi] is realized concretely in the world and particularly in other people. Service to others then becomes a way to God and ultimately to human liberation. Similarly, Confucian traditions embody a deeply indigenous, Asian way of constructing reality as a sacred whole. In that construct, liberation and freedom take on meanings and dimensions functionally religious in the way they anchor individuals and the community to the cosmic whole. In Part Three, Amaladoss gives his own analysis and prophetic overview on how the plurality of images of liberation enriches the possibility for interreligious cooperation in overcoming the forces of oppression in Asia.

Book Synopsis Love for Liberation by : Robin J. Hayes
Download or read book Love for Liberation written by Robin J. Hayes and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2021-07-16 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the height of the Cold War, passionate idealists across the US and Africa came together to fight for Black self-determination and the antiracist remaking of society. Beginning with the 1957 Ghanaian independence celebration, the optimism and challenges of African independence leaders were publicized to African Americans through community-based newspapers and Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Inspired by African independence—and frustrated with the slow pace of civil rights reforms in the US—a new generation of Black Power activists embarked on nonviolent direct action campaigns and built alternative institutions designed as spaces of freedom from racial subjugation. Featuring interviews with activists, extensive archival research, and media analysis, Robin Hayes reveals how Black Power and African independence activists created a diaspora underground, characterized by collaboration and reciprocal empowerment. Together, they redefined racial discrimination as an international human rights issue requiring education, sustained collective action, and global solidarity—laying the groundwork for future transnational racial justice movements, such as Black Lives Matter.
Book Synopsis Freedom for Women by : Carol Giardina
Download or read book Freedom for Women written by Carol Giardina and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2010-04-25 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this richly detailed firsthand history of the contemporary Women's Liberation Movement (WLM), scholar-activist Carol Giardina argues against the prevalent belief that the movement grew out of frustrations over the male chauvinism experienced by WLM founders active in the Black Freedom Movement and the New Left. Instead, she contends, it was the ideas, resources, and skills that women gained in these movements that were the new and necessary catalysts for forging the WLM in the 1960s. Giardina uses a focused study of the WLM in Florida to tap into the common theory and history shared by a relatively small band of Women's Liberation founders across the country. Drawing on a wealth of interviews, autobiographical essays, organizational records, and published writings, Freedom for Women brings to light information that has been previously ignored in other secondary accounts about the leadership of African American women in the movement. It also explores activists' roots in other movements on the left. Comprehensive, serendipitous, and carefully formulated, Giardina's work is a vivid portrait of the people and events that shaped radical feminism.
